I'm thinking of trying my hand at a Poser "superhero" figure. I did this picture by hand, over 20 years ago, and always liked Odin's look. I hadn't read comics since the 1980's. Around that time Odin still figured prominently in Thor comics. Now Odin seems to be dead and forgotten. I am thinking of using either Michael or Musclebound Michael for the figure. There are a few concerns here. Probably the most confusing one is just how do I put a good looking full beard on this character? Is there are morph for that? A texture for a beard?! I suppose I can find some armor out there, and stick it on Michael... to complete the figure. Musclebound Mike might be a problem since he's bigger....But Odin was a big and powerful God. I appreciate any input or suggestions.

Michael has beard morphs, but a distorted chin with a beard texture applied doesn't look that convincing, in my opinion. DAZ recently introduced some new beard textures for Michael at their store. And there are beard props around, though I think they're all for the Poser 4 Male. Try Ghastley's site (link above).

With all these people creating transmapped hair props for Vicky and Mike, you'd think someone would have done a transmapped beard by now.

That's a great pic, by the way. Is it based on the Marvel Comics interpretation of Odin?

Odin wasn't a big god. He was a sneaky, treacherous, clever god. Thor was bigger by far, but he wasn't as smart as Odin. BTW, Odin had only 1 eye. If he wore any armor, it would have been a chain mail byrnie, but I can recall no story where he is described as wearing armor, not even at the last battle. Carolly

Well you obviously weren't reading Thor comics in the 1970's when I drew this original picture. At that time, Odin had two eyes... He lost one in later years. I believe it was due to some "deal" he had made with "darker forces." It always amazes me how some people think that their own limited experience with a character is the only "Gospel Truth." Take Supergirl for example. The Supergirl I knew was Superman's cousin, from Krypton. The last time we had a conversation on this subject, she was some kind of earthbound angel, clone, or maybe all the above. So before you jump on someone "for historical innacuracies" again, do your own research. Thanks for commenting.

Odin sneeky and trecherous? I did not read these comics, but according to Norse mythology Odin was the all father. Loki was the sneeky, trecherous one. Maybe the comic were different though... ronknights: Great picture. I think that I once saw a long, "hillbilly" looking beard in the marketplace, although Odin's beard looks so full that you may have to make one especially for the character. Good Luck.

Hauksdottir is talking about the actual Norse god I am pretty sure. But anyway, the Santa at Daz has a good full beard that can be transmapped. there is also just the beard there but it around the same price and not tweaked for Michael.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, it will maybe persuade me to buy Michael.

Thanks for the feedback/support. I confess to being a bit edgy on the subject of Odin. That drawing was one of my best, and it was done in the 1970's. Now I talk about Odin, and well, the news is not good. I'm still at a loss concerning this one. I had started another figure. It was a forgotten Marvel super hero... but his costume was one of the most complex I've seen, and I'm having troubles. Does anyone know where I can get some good patchwork quilt textures?! If I could figure how to do those then I'd be in business. If I could find a good beard maybe I could do Odin as well.

Ghostofmacbeth is right; that beard in the Michael Santa Suit at DAZ is a very close match for your Odin. A good blond hair texture, and you'd almost be there. It doesn't look like the beard is designed for transmaps (is it layered?), but I have to admit, it's a good model-job. And the whole set is a steal at the introductory price. The mustache might be a bit tricky. The Santa beard's mustache doesn't flare out like Odin's, and it doesn't look like there are any morphs to modify it, other than turning it off. A custom morph might be required, or perhaps something could be done with Ghastley's mustache. Hey, did the Marvel Odin have a couple of ravens as familiars? I just can't remember.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2001 at 3:35 PM

It isn't layered but it works okay for transmaps. Have done it and it works okay. As far as the mustache there isn't one like that but Odin doesn't always have that one. And I think the Marvel Odin has the Ravens but it depends on the writer.

I found a santa beard somewhere and started fiddling. I got lost and lost the beard. I found it again. Who knows?!

I think the figure could be done, but require a lot of thought. I mean odin in so many books is a little different. in the history one he seems to be a good guy who is fair, yet smart enough to know that nothing lasts forever. But in other books is like this great god of vengence. So I say make the figure the way you see him and then let others see if they can see in him what you saw when you made him.
