Subject: Help, please- Poser export polycount problem.

Micheleh ( ) posted Tue, 11 December 2001 at 2:47 PM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 7:59 AM

I've been exporting a poser model to my modeling program (Moray.) However, when I import in OBJ form, the model looks very low-poly and crude. If I import in 3ds format, it is slightly better, but the attached textures cannot be removed. (I want to make different textures in the modeler, not use the poser textures.) Is there a way to increase the polycount for exporting? I didn't see anything, and that horrible "help" is just a pdf, not a help at all, or it would have a SEARCH tab, thank you. Thanks!

Poser can't change the polycount. The models in Poser are the same as your inport in Moray. Poser renders organic forms rather good, because it smoothes the polys in his render.
Maybe you can activate some form of smoothing with another program. I don't know how, but some people use uvmapper for everything, maybe there is an option for polygon smoothing.

Do you render in Povray?

Yep! Wouldn't use anything else- the new version rocks. I want to import w/o textures to try to take advantage of the transparency/translucency available with Moray textures to emulate subsurface scattering. (Glowing complexion, that is!) I gues I'll have to use an intermediary poly-adjusting type program. Oh, well. Thanks!

Maybe you don't need to do this. I don't have Moray, but the Poser models I rendered in Rovray were ok. Maybe it is only the View of the model in Moray that is crude.

You could export it out and put it into UVuv Mapper and do a split verticies to increase your polygon count and then save it as a object file again with the new count. UV Mapper Load Model, Edit Tools Split Verticies Save Model Hope that helps you count. Sharen

Wow, fabulous work, Mi-scha! You've given me an idea... I DO have UV Mapper! (I just forgot, duh.) Thanks, Sharen! I'll try it! If that, and my "idea" work, I'll post a pic.

Cool, can't wait...Sharen

Well, waah! I tried the UV trick like you said, and it didn't work! When I reopened the file after saving to test it, the numbers were the same! :( I tried another 'gram, object maker, but all it did was crash when I tried to save. crap

I am going to try it...Sharen

My pic was straight out of Poser into Povray. No need for uvmapper. There are many converter for obj to pov format. I probably used OBJuvPOV for this pic, but I'm not sure. The most usefriendly is [Poseray](http://user.txcyber.com/~sgalls) from flyerx.

Anyway, just try to render your model in Povray, it looks probably ok.

Micheleh: What version of Moray are you using, I have the latest version and I cant recall being able to import OBJ or 3DS files directly. Did you convert them and if so, with what? Maxx

I know the pose isn't perfect (!) -believe it or not, this is one of my first attempts to adapt a pose. Anyway-you can see the faceing problem. The woman looks like a golf ball! I have the latest versions of both Moray (3.3) and POV (3.5 beta eight). To import straight obj or 3ds, go to file- import- mesh and select type. I've been doing a little reading, and apparently for smoothing, the mesh should be imported as a raw file to apply smooth-triangle properties. (You have no idea how hard it is to do research on percodan. Thank god I'm getting these wisdom teeth out tomorrow!) Yeah, I rendered the mesh, it looks real polyed. (see above)

It looks like Moray is the culprit. I never had this problem with another obj to pov converter.
