Subject: Bad Horse! (That darn poser horse.)

My first attempt to properly pose and proportion the horse. This is NOT easy, is it?

DTHUREGRIF ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 1:53 AM

Michela, You have your work cut out for you. The horse is not properly proportioned to begin with and the joint parameters are WAY wrong! It is impossible to really pose it correctly and the way the mesh is cut, I don't think you could even fix the joints if you wanted to.

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 2:18 AM

The legs look too long. I once tried To geT is mouth o the ground level to graze, and only just about managed to do it by moving joint centers about in the joint editing window, and then when I put his head down, a hump like a camel's appeared over its withers. To get the leg action right the model would have to be re-cut according to its anatomy with separte parts for its femurs and humeruses in a way that would need extra Weld commands editing ino the CR2 file, and that would need a cure for the bad but tha shows when I render a model hat has exra Weld commands in.

Micheleh ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 2:28 AM

I know- thanks, all! I want to export the thing and redo it, I just need to find a good mesh amnipulator that doesn't cost a fortune. (Rhino trial, here I come!) I tried to reassign some of the vertices, but the grouping tool doesn't seem to work with the horse. :(

Micheleh ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 2:32 AM

... oh, btw, I lengthened the legs- a real horse has longer legs than the poser horse. It won't be able to graze right without serious remeshing, but hey, it'll be more anatomically correct. ;]

Micheleh, Daio has done wonders with the out-of-the-box Poser horse, you should check out her poses and textures. Bloodsong and Shlabber have also worked with the horse. (Bloodsong has neat blankets which can go to the ground and cover most of the poor beast's problems!) The horse, cat, and dog ALL need to be replaced in Poser 5. They are ancient models (from Poser 3) and simply not up to today's workmanship. We fervently hope that Daz will make new models. Carolly

Ironbear ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 4:30 AM

Might browse back through the 3DCommune's poser forum. Daio has posted tons of tips on posing and fixing the poser hrose in there. Some Daz charcger tips as well. She's pretty muchly to the poser horse what Xurge is to armor. ;]

Hi; Hehehe... Finally realizing that the "animals" of poser don't quite even come close to all the realism that the "people" of poser have been endowed with...eh ;-) You think the horse is bad, take a gander at the Lion, what a laugh, and even the basic Dog and Cat is a royal riot if your looking for photo realism for animal Doctors...hehehe. Might explain why we do see so few zoological wonders in the galleries and most everything is based on the "people" of poser ;-) I really don't think Meta had meant for poser to be as much as what all these communities have made of it over time. I think the "basics" of the program are quite obvious, it "was" meant as a tool to "start" out with, and because of the large mass following and realization of the potential this software provided in basic structure, Daz and all the many talented folks among these communities have managed to make this poser and it's affiliates into a "wonder box of imaginary delights" that do become very "real." Slowly it is being applied to much more than just the people, and eventually maybe we may have much more focus on the rest of the animal species as well as just the basic few,...Daio, Bloodsong, Debra Ross just to name a few, have done wonders in this area. Very commendable and it is when one see's a "basic" rendering as you have posted here, (no offense cause your pose is pretty good), we can really see how far this has all been taken over time... A toast to the marvels and talents of these communities that have brought poser such a loooong, loooooong ways ;-) Cheers and Happy New Year.

You can make the Poser horse look good, but I will be the first to admit it is not easy. One thing to remember is that like most of the human figures, the poser horse will look a LOT better if you set your camera focal length to 80-120 rather than the default. Here is a pix of the poser horse after being morphed, posed and textures. There is NO post on this picture as can be seen by the break in the tail ;-) The pose, morphs and texture and tail trans are available as free downloads on my site. The mane is the charger mane morphed and scaled to fit the pose horse with the textures and trans I have available here at the Marketplace.

Actually, RadArt, Poser began as a pose reference tool for 2D artists. Pose the figure, and use that as reference for your sketch or painting. Much cheper than paying a model every time, and you can even get "impossible" poses.

Valandar....well stated....and exactly what I meant too, but you clarified my dribble down to much fewer and clearer words ;-)

Jim Burton ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 2:00 PM

Yes, the horse is pretty bad, aside from the other problems it needs a proper tail and mane. All of the Poser animals I've looked at have mistakes too - open seams, parts of the mesh that are in the wrong group, stuff like that. I actually got started on Supermodel horse, but it didn't get too far, only far enough to see the propblems in fact. I was thinking about doing it as a morph collection, but I now think it will be all new mesh, when I get back to it. I did do enough research to figure out what kind of hourse I want it to be though, an Anglo-Arab (I think that is waht they are called!) SMV would look really good on SMH doing a Lady Godiva!

Schlabber ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 3:59 PM

You're right - the horse is bad. Sorry to say, even your horses, Daio, mostly don't look like real horses (and this won't mean you did a bad job - in fact you did a real marvellous job). And without postwork the poser horse looks mostly like the Barbie horse (uhm - not right - I would say the Barbie horse looks better) And if you ever tried to pose the wolf, dog, cat and even the snake - you'll find out that your posing-fantasies are very limitated :o(. In fact you're right - Jim - every animal needs a replacement ... Maybe I'm not good enough in making poses - when it comes to pose the animals I'm going to hate posing (well, not really, but ...). Maybe we'll get some new pets with Poser 5 maybe DAZ will do some - but I really hope SOMEONE will do some. But however - have a happy new year :o)

Yep, to get the poser horse to look reasonably real does take a bit of post work, but it can be done. But I have yet to manage photorealism with it. Making the cat, dog, lion or wolf look real is, though, as you mentioned, almost impossible. I find the cat, particularly, really frustrating. I was hoping the Charger would be an improvement on the p4 horse but in many ways its conformation problems are even worse.

I'd be happy to volunteer my horse - a purebred Arabian stallion (shown above) as the model for a new poser horse. And any of my 9 cats to model for a new poser cat.

I posted a message at HighEnd3D requesting estimates to model a "real" horse. The cheapest I got was from Ken Brilliant at $600.00. I emailed him asking what his licensing requirements would be but didn't get an answer....oh well...

movida ( ) posted Tue, 01 January 2002 at 6:48 PM

actually it wasn't the "cheapest" but I really do like his work...A LOT!!! So, for me, it was the most "reasonable" all things considered s

Couldn't resist. This old guy was our Senior Stallion up until we lost him suddenly last year.

And any of my 9 cats to model for a new poser cat. But how would we get them to stand still in the 3D scanner? :) I've given serious thought to making a Millenium Cat, but I'm not sure that my modelling skills are up to the task.

A supermodel horse!!!?? Hahahahaha!! Jim Burton, that is the funniest thing I have heard in a few hours.....hehehe....you have a great sense of humor!!! ;-) Of course...there is a possibility your serious so just in case I will go....woohoo, that be swell ;-) Hehehe....cheers.

Ironbear ( ) posted Wed, 02 January 2002 at 12:28 AM

Hrmm... a shameless plug here. Bloodsong's heavy horse is fantastic, and it can be rescaled to an extent to fill in for some of the non draft breeds. Of course, you tehn need to do your own textures...

Gorgeous stallion, Eng. I've got some professional pix of my boy but they're still packed away in one of the boxes I haven't opened yet. I'll echo Movida question. He looks Polish to me , specifically he reminds me a litttle of Bask but I've never been good at distinquishing bloodlines by sight. Blacki (WRR BlackGold) is Crabett /Babson and was a Western Pleasure champ on the east cost in his youth. He's always been far too laid back ever to make a good halter horse. He's retired now and getting rather spolied. :-)

Now for something completely different. This is Poseidon, a Friesian stallion my mother bred as a 2 year old.

Oh, I actually mean it, I really want to do a horse! Horses are such beautiful animals, I could get into making a nice one. It would have to be a skinny horse, sort of like SMV is a skinny girl, though, an Arabian would also be in the area I was thinking of, Cyldesdales (sp!) need not apply! I also did get far enough to find that Poser's "tail" bending (a special setting that many of us don't even know exists, I'm sure) doesn't work in any logical way I can figure out.

Michele, Have created early last year, i think, a Warhorse. As a base i used some pictures of Daio. It has for all bodyparts a heavy-morph and something which just looks a bit like hairmane, tailhair and feathers. It's in freestuff under my nickname or just search for Warhorse. But anyway i would also recommend Bloodsongs Heavy-Horse. It looks really well done and has a lot of morphs and also some for facial-expression. The horses on the picture where a 2 minute-render with the Warhorse and the left one has Daio's perfect grey-dapple texture applyed. SHARKEY

Improvements on the poser horse I'd love to see: Recut the feet so the pieces can be posed correctly (pardon my lack of precise names - I'm an artist not a horse person) Give him some musculature for pete's sake! Add segments to the neck so it is more posable - if you've ever had a horse suddenly turn and bite at you when you were standing at its shoulder, you know what I mean :) Add a segment to the body between the chest and hips - so bronco's can actually buck Teeth! That poor critter has been eating oatmeal all these years (although Bloodsong (I think) made him some dentures) Make the mane look better. and trust me - ANYTHING will be better :P Transmap the tail and make morphs for length and flow. A braided tail would also be nice. Make body morphs for breeds - clydesdale, arabian, 'mutt', as well as adjustment morphs for the head. And then add 'fantasy' morphs for cloven feet, unicorn beard, unicorn horn (although that can be propped) As for textures - take a hint from AprilYSH's remapping of the p4dude to accept Mike's textures. Make 2 versions - one with new UVmapping, with a 'pelt' layout (nobody cares if the belly gets smeared) and one that takes the p4horsemap And for that matter - if you can keep the body size roughly the same as the p4horse, we won't have to remake all the tack Okay that was more than .02 cents - closer to .75 BTW to Daio and Bloodsong and Schlabber - thanks for making the poser horse even somewhat usable! and PS If you all haven't bought Daio's darkhorse pack from DAZ you should. Just the black one is worth the price! Lyrra

Goldfire ( ) posted Wed, 02 January 2002 at 6:47 PM

Oooohhh, Daio, your stallion is buuuutifuuulll! I LOVE Arabians, and a BLACK one, how rare! Or is he one of those really dark bay or brown that looks like black?

Seriously, I am a big horse person, but have found the poser horse very frustrating. Daio's lovely texs make him look better, but....

Bloodsong's Heavy Horse is quite nice, and Vista Internet Products has an Arabian...the only problem is that none of the tack out there fits it! I originally was using the Arab in my render "Rider on the Storm" and the tack problem forced me to switch.

Definately pick up some of the free poses by Daio and others, they are a great help! The default poser horse poses do NOT look like the way a real horse moves. I'll have to try that camera trick, Daio, thanks.

Daio ( ) posted Wed, 02 January 2002 at 7:57 PM

Blacki is a true black. Nary a brown hair on him. Hate to say this but the Dark horse pack at DAZ isn't mine. I do have a black horse texture but it's free (it's on my site.) I also have a black charger texture somewhere. If anyone wants it let me know and I'll stick it up on my site.
