Hi Alekssander, You need to use the Quadratic Spot Lights in Vue 4. Here is an example I've just done, with the default settings. I've also done an experimental animation, giving a stage light effect which I could upload if you are interested :) Martin

Sorry. I only have vue 2. Just wandering: What happens if you point other lights on that, or make a hole stage? And, can you have different colors?

Hi Alexssander, For every light you add, if the light beams cross each other, then the light will get more intense. Quadratic lights try to mimic natural light decay. You can have these lights in any colour you wish. I've got the experimental animation (584KB) here which will show the interaction of the lights: http://web.ukonline.co.uk/martin.childs/animations/lights.avi I'm afraid it is in DivX format (http://www.divx.com/), and because the file is not hosted at my main site and on a free host, it may be wise to right click the link and "Save Target As...".

Unfortunately there are no quadratic lights or volumetrics in v.2. You're already getting a more impressive result than I'd typically expect from v.2. :)

Martin: OK, I'm downloading...Test Run my ass... That was a lot of crappy advertisement....waiting..... During this endless download: Can you make gobos/flowers on that light? If you don't know what that is, I linked a picture. It's maybe a little bit difficult to see that on the picture.(That's an old one).

Martin: Didn't look to bad, but since I've worked with lights and light controlling, I had to laughf. And how do I turn this thing of..... So now I just have to wait to get a new computer, so that I can bye Vue 4.....

Hi Alekssander, you said: "Can you make gobos/flowers on that light?" Do you mean like Light Gels. You can add any bitmap texture or Vue material to a light so that it projects an image and shadows in the beam. With this image I just added a bitmap image to the volumetric light to get the effect.

One thing that I wanted to see with the animation, is if Vue had problems with multiple volumetric light cones crossing each other. As you can see the transitions are very smooth amongst the light cones.
Hope that helps,

Martin

Not realy, but that's close enough. Thanks. I still can't find gels in my dictionary though. How did you make that animation, if I may ask? I made some gif animations, but there is possible to make animations directly in Vue 4, right? Or do I have to render a hundred frames, as I had to do with the gif-animations?

Cheers ( ) posted Thu, 03 January 2002 at 11:03 AM

Hi, You can render the animation out as one animation file (i.e.AVI, MPEG, MOV etc) from within Vue 4. I still prefer to render out individual uncompressed frames myself...although uncompressed full frame AVI is just the same, just without the mess ;) I hope you don't mind me asking Alekssander, what type of machine are you running...Vue 4 is able to run on quite low powered PC's, compared to the machines manufactured now. Can you make objects move? I now from the old days with worldcraft, that it wasn't that difficult. I have a compaq P-II 400mhz MMX with the astoneshing 64MB Ram which I can't uppgrade. I'm getting a new comp in March.

Cheers ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2002 at 5:33 AM

Hi Alekssander, You can indeed make objects move, like the lights in the animation. If you play with the textures, you can also animate them. In still images, you can give the appearance of movement by adding motion blur...the possibilities are endless really. It is interesting about your computer though. In the Vue manual they reccommend at least a 300MHz Pentium 2, 64MB RAM...so your machine meets the minimum specs. Of course it does not really matter if you use Athlon or Pentium processors though. Doesn't "minimum specs", means endless rendering and lot of frustration?...lol... Got that all ready....
