Subject: We've come along way baby.....

Butch ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 10:40 PM · edited Tue, 29 October 2024 at 9:41 PM

While going through some old software, I came across my original Poser 1 disks, as well as Poser 2. For some reason I had to load them and try them out. I was amazed at the difference in the program. At the same time I must confess to be a little homesick for the old poser program. it is like an old friend that moved and you never see anymore. Does anyone else still have the old programs and do you ever dig them out??

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 10:49 PM

No, but I recall lusting after Poser when it first came out. In fact, I still have a copy of the original advertisement (for Mac only). I can do a quick scan if anyone wants to see it.

Butch ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 11:15 PM

I don't even remember how I ran across poser, except once I had read the ad for it, I had to have it.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 11:21 PM

If you're feeling particularly sentimental for the old version, the next time you launch Poser 4, try this: Type in the following: po2 To return to normal, type: po3

Butch ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 11:48 PM

Ok, I will, but what does it do? Turn back the clock for P4?

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 12:34 AM

In a manner of speaking ... it's one of those hidden easter eggs. It gives you the old Poser interface.

Just type it on the keyboard, geep, while you have Poser running. It's like a cheat code.

Strangechilde ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 1:28 AM

Hey, cool! I'll have to try that! Are there any others?

geep ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 1:47 AM

Does THAT bring back memories! 'Cept that when I went to "po2" then loaded a new file, it locks up. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Got any others? ********************************************************* Hey, maybe we could start an easter egg forum with a prize for the person who finds the most .... [oh, shutup, geep!] Well, it sounded like a good idea at the .............

Way cool but what does hair do? It brings up some sort of table thingy, but I couldn't get it to do anything.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 2:18 AM

It's an early prototype for a hair-generation tool; it wasn't ready for primetime when MetaCreations released Poser 4, but it ended up buried in the code as an easter egg. You can't do much with the hair tool by itself; you need MASA's FurFur utility (available here) to create actual model geometry with it. There's a tutorial on the website.

Impudicus Rex ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 2:19 AM

The HAIR TREE panel: 1.Select an object in your scene. 2.Adjuist parameters on the HAIR TREE panel. 3.Click "Add Settings To Object" button on Hair panel. (I think that's what it's called. It's the button at the top) You can even use the Grouping tool to select portions of your cahracter/prop that you want to grow hair. Hair will also grow out of the ground if selected.

Found it.

Memories,
light the corners of my mind.
Misty watercoloured memories
of the way we were.

Neato! Does anyone still have any of their early poser renders? I have a few buried on a disk somewhere. Maybe we ought to post them to the gallery so all the newbies could see the just how the program has developed over the years.

Strangechilde ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 2:53 AM

Wow... Accellerated for Power Mac... wow.

I still have my Poser 2 disks (floppies!), but I don't know what I did with them. They're lost on a shelf somewhere. I haven't tried loading it, though. Funny! I'd forgotten all about it. I came in with Poser 2. Never had Poser 1. I accidentally found it at an Egghead store on the bargain table. Someone had bought it and returned it because it was "too detailed for what they needed." Can you imagine that? Too detailed! They had it on the table for 5% off at about $139, so I bought it. A couple months later, I found that CompUSA had the same program for $129, brand new. Yikes! Well, live and learn. And the rest is history... Melanie

I'll bet you're the only person thats ever had that happen. ;=]

I thik Ive kept every early version of every program I own, from Poser to Bryce to Photoshop -- version 1 of that one is a whopping 870k, can only handle black and white, and supports no filters at all but it still runs on my iMac.

Butch ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 12:00 PM

At one time I had all the computers that I have had over the years but finally had to get rid of them. Taking up too much space. My First was a Commadore 64! Actually now that I think about it was the second. My first was a Sinclar-Lewis with a whopping 2k memory. My first PC was an IBM PC2, I believe. I bought it used from a place that sold computers by the pound. I thought I was in hog heaven when I got my first 486-25!

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2002 at 1:27 PM

I still have my Atari 1200XL (circa 1979). Not the original, mind you. My first 1200XL burned out after fifteen years of faithful service. I somehow found a replacement. My first PC was a 486-33, and it has been in a constant state of upgrade evolution. I have all the original parts tucked away in a dark corner somewhere. The first software I purchased for my PC was Wolfenstein 3D (I'd played the original 2D Wolfenstein on my Atari). Ironically, the most recent software I've purchased is Return to Castle Wolfenstein. So I'm feeling a bit nostalgic right now.

I still have my baby Mac, with a double disk drive, since one had to be used for the operating system (which I think is version 3). A glorious black and white monitor with 8 shades of grey. And it still looks damn elegant after almost twenty years.
