Subject: How do I import an .obj I modelled to use in Poser?

JBroneske ( ) posted Tue, 05 February 2002 at 12:29 PM ยท edited Tue, 14 January 2025 at 4:43 PM

I just modelled a simple open-backed drum in Anim8or, saved it as an .obj file and now I need to know what to do next in order to get it into Poser, scale it if need be and make it so that a Poser figure can hold it in their hand.

I tried going into Poser and doing an Import/Wavefront.obj, but nothing showed up (it said "drum" under the display window, but nothing was in the window)

Thanks,

Joan

File|Import|Wavefront OBJ Careful though - sometimes Poser has a habit of flipping the odd normal here and there (it can be fixed via the Grouping Tool.) HTH, /P

It still might be there, you may have to zoom out to find it. Sharen

Is it listed in the hierarchy editor? If so its there! You might have to render before you can see were it is.. When you first import an OBJ it may help to import at 100% figure size, until you get a feel for how things work. Gerald

Heres how i do it :o)...I add a poser figure to my 3d app and scale it to 1000 (as they are they are far to small) then scale and position the prop to match..once all thats done and set up i delete the figure then reset all the axis of the prop to zero, rotation to zero and the axis scale to 1...then when you scale the model by .001 it brings it down to poser scale without shifting its relative position..then import into poser with all boxes unchecked......if its inside out go back and check the invert normals box....now if you can't do some of those in anim8or then import with boxes set at default BUT add a check to the "place on floor" box and change the scale to say 20% then position within poser, export and reimport with all unchecked ...Steve

When you get the "import" box, just check "Flip Normals" and see if it shows up! ;=]

If you look at the scene with your AUX camera you might be able to see your prop. I usually scale Wavefront obj to .25 in the import dialogue to start with then manually use the scale tool to make it the right size for use with my figure. It's a pain, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Good luck.

BTW - If you have created a prop in RDS or Carrara, ... when you "import" the object, UNcheck "Percent of standard figure size:" and import the object. Chances are that it's extremely large. So large, in fact, that you might not be able to see it [yet]. The object you just loaded should already be "selected", that is, it's parameter dials are the ones you see on the screen. Now, change the "Scale" of the prop to: 4.2% [for RDS] 1.05% [for Carrara] [menu] "Figure" ----> "Drop to floor" Your prop should be visible on the "ground." -or- You can get a free set of measuring props that allow you to scale anything you want in the Poser studio. [see geep's "Artist page"] cheers, dr geep ;=]

Thanks everyone. I'm such a DUH! I finally figured out that my camera was set to "face" and when I went to "main camera" there it was. :) I still had to mess with the scale a bit, so I will try the scaling suggestions that you all gave me. Thanks!
