Subject: 10 Minute Challenge, Metaball Monster!

Make a Monster using mostly Metaballs (you may want to add eyes or teeth or something to spruce it up). No restrictions, ANY monster will do! HAVE FUN!!! -Kix

Here's my entry . Was very fun to do ... :) 20 minutes from scratch to the render . Now i'm waiting to see yours !

I've been too busy at work for the last couple of months to do any new renderings worth sharing, so here's one from the archives. This illustration is for a storyline involving highly evolved amphibious creatures.

I must make a confession. This image took ten days, not ten minutes - so shame on me for violating the spirit of the ten minute challenge. The shell, central trunk and some of the organs are metaball shapes. Everything else was done in the spline/free-form modeler.

I was tempted to check the "nudity" button on the submission form since every organ is shamelessly displayed ;^D

the body, legs and tail (one object) took ten minutes. but i still had an uncompleted monster. what was i going to do, stop there? so i completed the model - about a 30 more min (not counting lighting set up time.) all metaballs except for the eyes, spline tusks and claws. -scott

Scott, that is very cool. He looks like he was modeled out of clay and you took a snapshot of him. I don't know if that's what you were going for, but I really like the look. --Terri

thanks terri, i don't really know what i was after either. i was really trying to get it done in ten minutes, and after that passed just as quickly as possible. so i cut a lot of corners. but i agree, it really does look like a clay monster. perhaps if he had more detail in the modeling or if the texture was finer (like on the arms and head which i scaled down ... they don't look as clay-like) well whatever. thanks for the compliment though. -scott

Actually, I'd love to see the settings you used to get that effect. I think it's really cool.

the settings for the monster shader... enjoy. colors and pull down choices are written in.

it's a dark texture, but i lit the heck out of it.

Thanks! It's funny where these 10 minute challenges can take us, eh? I wonder if a Play-dough look could be achieved. The result might look like Klayman, or those amateur stop motion animation I remember from watching Zoom (american public tv kid's show from the 70's). I know a lot of you guys put a lot of work in to ultra realism, but I gotta tell you, now that I've hit middle age, I love the cartoony/clamation look! Enjoying my second childhood, --Terri
