It's a bowl to make rat-soup. The small stone is used to knock the rat dead. Or, it also reminds me of an ex-girlfriend. She was made of the same kind of material ;)

Is it something used by a smith? Looks like the ladle is built to handle hot melted metals or something like that. Stone bowl used to hold chemical or water to dip metal in for cooling? Of course, I'm just guessing hehe

Font for holy water?

not a bad guess. it HAS something to do with water... but it's not holy, - and it's actually not a font.

Its a torture device. It holds hot water or oil, and they bring in people upside down and use the scoop to pour it down their nose. But maybe not. The rock doesnt make sense because if you can create all that ironwork, why would you use a crude rock as a tool? Perhaps its a bathroom sink. But I still dont understand the rock.

Phrank... *lol* well the Spaniards, - who invented this thing were inquisadores :) But they didn't use this for torture. As I said, St. Augustine is a clue, - as is the Spaniards who established the city more than 400 years ago. Alpha.. lol... nope! Actually, - the stone on top of it doesn't actually "do" anything. It was put there as an example of the material coquina, that was used to build most of the buildings here in these days. Coquina is actually compressed seashells and sand, - and is still found in large quantities here. This sample is from one of the walls on the fort. Britt

Never saw one of those when I was in St.Augustine(School at the Fire College). I would guess that it was a lead smelt of some sort, but I did not see any burn marks at the base.

laughing You guys are much more creative than the old Spaniards! Let's see... Where to start. Yeah... The water here in FL is pretty good, - and there is a lot of it, - underneath all the sand. (Florida is SANDY and flat for those of you who haven't been here). So they dug a lot of wells, - but the water must have been pretty awful to drink, - because it was so full of sand. The stone container (the green thingy) was stone carried on Spanish ships as ballast. Naturally they had them all around here in abundance, because they weren't carried back to Spain. Some creative guy/guyette must have poured some water in one of them, - and discovered that the stone was actually "leak". So, - with this new invention, - they could FILTER the water after getting it up from the well. :) Make sense?? Britt

;) See my response.. it's a waterfilter the sand remains in the stone, - while the CLEAN water drips through the stone and down to a bucket they had under it. I think my tap water is MUCH easier! g Britt

Oh I thought it was a mini mortar and pestle! Take the sand and grind it up and all you days you'll have good luck. But why is it so small. I figure make it really bit. Actually why is the thing on land you should have freshwater right. I'm so confused. I think you are trying to deceive us. It's really a colledge pledge sacrifical bowel. One brings the victim ( er. pledge ) next to the bowel then konks them on the head with the ladel, while they are dazed they are commanded to drink from the bowel, if they survive they are now a member of the frat-sorotity. NOT FAIR!!!!!! You gave the answer before I had my turn!!! I was pretty damn close too - we have a lot of limestone here which is also porous - hence I've heard of similar items before, but not for sand, just to give purer water..... damn and blast!! (",)

Britt, Im embarrassed, I stared and stared at it, and thought it was the same thing Slynky thought...A toilet. Gives creedence to the idea of "pooper scooper", and I was trying to think of St. Augustine and torturing himself too...wow a water filter!
