Subject: Terrain maps?

Farooq ( ) posted Tue, 26 February 2002 at 4:26 PM · edited Mon, 10 February 2025 at 9:38 AM

Does anybody know a URL where I can download grayscale maps to create terrains? thanx

MikeJ ( ) posted Tue, 26 February 2002 at 4:56 PM

Not offhand, I don't but you can make your own and import them into Vue in the terrain editor. Or just use Vue's built-in terrain editor algorithms. You might try the USGS website, but I think that's mostly DEM files there.

If you do not have photoshop - practically any image editor will work but like Mike I havent ever ran across a site that has grey scale images for terrains. There is a tutorial on using DEM files and terrain data that you may find interesting with the link below.

Here is a link for you. I can't find the original Home address, but I had this link stuffed away. The images are very high resolution and probably need to be tweaked for Vue usage. Charles

I post here a message from Orio Menoni, our list creator of the Vue community. I have download the beta and have seen images, they look great. The only thing is that I do not know how to make it work. If some of you would like to try and please create a little beginners tutorial. Thanks. Here is Orio's message: I am sure most of you will be interested in trying out this new free beta terrain generator, called World Machine, which was announced today: http://students.washington.edu/sschmitt/world/ My personal opinion: it is the most interesting terrain generator I have seen so far (and I have seen'em all) Here is the gallery main page, to see some artworks made with it: http://students.washington.edu/sschmitt/world/gfx/index.htm I personally always hoped for a terrain generator to produce hill terrains like this one: http://students.washington.edu/sschmitt/world/gfx/pages/temp10.htm or alpine terrains as realistic as this one without going DEM: http://students.washington.edu/sschmitt/world/gfx/pages/temp12_big.htm

I couldn't figure it out either, Guitta!

zoon ( ) posted Wed, 27 February 2002 at 8:00 AM

I've just tried World Machine, and I can join all the bits together to make lovely networks, but despite setting output to 1024 by 1024 I got a little thin strip of a bitmap about 20 by 300. Looks like it may be interesting when it works though. Adrian.

I'm wondering how to export ? Cannot see any button orwhatever for it. But I have tried with an existing fole, made a screenshot and imported it then into Vue. This works fine and the resolution is not a problem, as we can do this in Vue. Guitta

To generate a terrain, double click on the output box, and save as a tga. Then do it again, with a different name - only the PREVIOUS save saves, if you see what I mean. This is great, I've suggested to eon several times that they offer the kind of terrain they had in Vue 1, with no lowered edges, and this does it nicely.

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 27 February 2002 at 6:08 PM

Cool deal, zoon. I couldn't figure out how to save either, but I did at least create a decent terrain and then just took a screen capture to get the height map. Well, it wasn't great...kinda weird, really, but much different than anything I've ever gotten out of Vue. Thanks for the info.

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 27 February 2002 at 6:09 PM

Oh yeah, and your two terrains there look great!

Hi folks,

Guitta send me an email saying that some of you were interested in World Machine, my terrain generation tool. I just wanted to drop by and say that I've opened up a user's group for it on yahoo groups, to help people figure out how to use its (admittedly sometimes confusing!) interface and to get nice results.

I'd encourage any of you who are interested in the program to come on over and ask questions, etc, that you have there, to keep all the resources in one place.

Hope to see some of you there!

Hi Stephen, That's right nice of you, thanks for the info. :)

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 3:40 AM

Thanks Stephen:-). That's great! Guitta

MikeJ ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 9:20 AM

Well, I can't sign up, because I have no idea where I put all my Yahoo user info. I still can receive and send emails to the Vue list, because they come to my regular email, but I haven't been able to log into the page itself in over a year. And trying to reclaim my info is a no-go because apparently I fibbed a little when I was asked for some personally recognizable information.... Guess I'm gonna have to get a Hotmail acount....

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 10:50 AM

Mike, I have signed it very easy without doing any thing special. Just went to the page and logged in with my Vue d'Esprit user name and password. That's all. They did not ask me any thing more. Guitta

MikeJ ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 10:59 AM

Well that's the thing, Guitta. I have long since lost my Yahoo Groups password, and I can't retrieve it, either. Plus when I try to sign up with my email address and a new user name/password, it tells me I'm already a member. Well, I know that, but otherwise there is no way. I'm just simply going to have to create a separate account with a separate email address.

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 12:13 PM

Can't they send you the password ?

Varian ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 12:14 PM

Hey Mike, you can still join another YahooGroups e-mail lists. Just use the same e-mail address and send a blank e-mail to listname**-subscribe@yahoogroups.com** The "listname" should match the name of the list you want to join, in this case: worldmachine-subscribe@yahoogroups.com You'll get a return mail from Yahoo asking to confirm. Reply to that, and you're subscribed. :)

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 12:16 PM

There is a button "PAsswors lookup", they send it to you

MikeJ ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 12:22 PM

Hey thanks Varian, I'll try that. :) Guitta, yes, they could send me a password. You give them your email adress but you also have to answer a few other questions as well, such as your birthdate, zip code, etc. And apparently I didn't tell them the true info when I signed up. ;)

Jcleaver ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 12:30 PM

I'm having major problems saving. I've tried what others said works, but no go. Absolutely nothing saves 8-(. Oh well, such is life sometimes.

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 12:56 PM

Mike, I did not tell the trues either:-). Yahoo, Lycos and such "firms" will never get my true address or my true birthdate, zip and so on. What for? they would not send me any gift? But I write down where I said what (LOL). I understand you did not write down your "lies". Jcleaver, Stephen will answer to all your questions and explain at the list he created at Yahoo:-). Just ask. Guitta
