Subject: FRACTAL FORUM!!!!!!!!!!! *jumping up and down waving hands*

audre ( ) posted Tue, 26 February 2002 at 2:50 PM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 3:34 PM

cough cough sorry, got a bit excited... I would like to suggest a Fractal Gallery and Forum. if you do a search on fractal, you can see that recently there has been a huge influx of fractal images. i think it's hit critical mass where it would benefit to let the fractal artists have some place to share ideas and program tricks, and someplace to put their art other than, mixed, other, or 2d.... what do you all think?

Elusion ( ) posted Tue, 26 February 2002 at 4:05 PM

I second that motion...I have always loved fractals (and YOUR work, Audre!)and I would love to see at the very least a gallery devoted to Fractal Art. It would also help split the 2d gallery into subgalleries (Photo-manipulation would be another very necessary gallery, btw) Please? At least a fractal gallery...please?

I'd like to see a fractal forum here at Renderosity. Please consider it!

I would very much like to see a fractal gallery and forum also. I believe most fractals now are being posted under 2D, which doesn't seem quite the right category for them.

I wholly support the Fractal Forum idea because having a(nother) place to discuss various fractal programs, tips and techniques would be a good thing, especially if hosted at a high-traffic-high-interest site like Renderosity. BUT... I would probably post my work in the "Other Apps" gallery just as often as in a fractal gallery. Not because of any snobbishness or a desire to create confusion for viewers, but because I want my art to stand with and be compared to art from other programs, not apart from them. Maybe for the same reasons that photographers itched to see their work hang beside paintings and sculpture in art galleries not so long ago. For the sake of viewers who want to look specifically at fractals (or Bryce or Lightwave or Maya), however, I think having a fractal art gallery is a good thing. There's lots of variety amongst the various fractal art programs out there, after all. Of course, we could just have an "Other-D" gallery to complement the 2-D and 3-D ones. :)

What are fractals? When I create images with UltraFractal they are not necessarily fractals... I hope I still would have a choice where to post my images... So far having my images in 2D influenced my style very much. And I believe that I can develop it much better than if I was urged to stay in a pure Fractal Gallery. If you look at FractalWorld at Yahoo Groups you will see what I mean.

it's not a mandatory thing. you post your work where you think it belongs. however having a dedicated fractal place will allow fractal information to be shared and discussed. also will help bring fractal art more into the mainstream, i think. i post in mixed media alot, and will continue to do so, but i would like the ability to choose where i post my 'mostly fractal' work. i also think having our own forum, to talk about fractals, and formulas, techniques, compare programs and effects would be wonderful. newsgroups are okay, but not quite as rewarding for me, since they are not quite so interactive with other members.

What I like by posting in Renderosity is that I don't feel in a fractal ghetto like I can feel in all the other fractal places. This is why I am more or less happy with a fractal forum. My need is more to share with non-fractal artists.

For tips and techniques, I am not sure this would be shared more here than the other places, as there are already well established channels for it and my experience is that people who don't want to share won't share in any place they are.

Just my 2 pence.

LindaB ( ) posted Wed, 27 February 2002 at 9:18 AM

I think a fractal forum is a great idea, but I'm not all that interested in a fractal gallery. As others have said, there are already places where fractals are posted exclusively.

What Linda said :-) I used to think a separate fractal gallery would be a good thing, but being part of a broader art community has been a really good experience for me, and others too I think. The feedback and interest from those outside the fractal community has been great, and my eyes have been opened to other forms of digital art as well, both as observer and participant. One of the disadvantages of fractal software is that at the beginning it is very easy to churn out large numbers of not very interesting images in rather er ... psychedelic colours - and there are times when fractal newsgroups etc can get flooded by enthuisiastic beginners posting them - I would hate to see that happen in a gallery here. A fractal forum sounds good to me though - especially if it remains as friendly and civil as the other forums on renderosity. I would be interested to see how it would develop here - there are times when the fractal world at large can get a bit hot under the collar! Tina

Well I would certainly be interested in a Fractal Gallery, I post my Fractal stuff here in the Other Apps as I couldnt figure out quite where it was supposed to go. Personally Im not a Forum person but I can see the benefits of one, if only to share communication of our artform with people not familiar with it

abmlober ( ) posted Wed, 27 February 2002 at 11:20 PM

Yes - a fractals related forum would be fine with me too...

I rarely leave a fractal alone as it comes out of the fractal program. Seems like I itch to develop them. I'd still post them to a fractal area here at Renderosity just because they started as a recognizable fractal. I hope that there would be a home for that kind of work or for scans of mixed media compositions that include fractals. But no matter what, it's time for fractals at R'osity! - Elenyte

KPK ( ) posted Thu, 28 February 2002 at 1:26 AM

A forum sounds good to me too, but not a separated fractal gallery. As mentioned above by other artists it's my opinion too that sharing the fractal images together with non fractal art makes it more interesting and brings different art types together. We (the fractal artists) received a lot of comments written by non fractal artist and in response, we viewed a lot of their images and galleries and also commented on their art pieces. I find this a very exciting enrichment. KPK

Slynky ( ) posted Fri, 01 March 2002 at 7:38 PM

just to comment on the possibility of a "photo manipulation" gallery. For stuff like that, there's the 2d gallery, and the Photography gallery. 3 galleries to post photography i think would be a little much personally. Truth be told, Im not into fractals really. I sift through the photo, 2d and zbrush galleries usually. Every now and then, I click open a fractal image that catches my eye. I doubt however that I would go into a fractal gallery to visit. I think a lot of people who casually enjoy looking at fractals like myself would probably not bother much with a fractal gallery. As it stands, there is a decent viewership of fractals in the 2d gallery, people who pop in once in awhile and comment. The fact that the 2d gallery houses the images mostly allows for people to be surprised. I don't ever check the Poser forum. Not my thing, not my program. Fractal art isnt my thing or my program either, but i still look every now and then, just because they happen to be in my regular haunt. If it were to branch off, (and not that this is some huge loss or anything) I'd probably never be seen in again in the realm of fractals. Also, the amount of fractal art isn't exactly overwhelming. We have a few very dedicated fractal artists here. If it were taking over the gallery, than I feel that the need to justify a split would be there, however, in my mind, there isn't any need. just a few of my cents on the floor ry

hi slynky, perhaps the reason there aren't many fractal images at renderosity is because there isn't a specific gallery. just another 2 -eleny

Slynky ( ) posted Sat, 02 March 2002 at 5:39 PM

to each his own I say. I just hope that if we get a fractal gallery, that the 2d gallery doesnt get split into traditional, fractal, traced, photoshop, psp, painter, gimp, mixed 2d medium, etc. With already 30 different gallery pages, its starting to get crowded, and personally I think any new ones might get lost in the pile. My question being, why not just keep posting in 2d where fractals are already accepted? Oh well, im just one guy. Im out of pennies ry

BlueRose ( ) posted Sat, 02 March 2002 at 6:24 PM

Well most of my stuff is done in Xenodream which is technichally a 3D fractal program shrug so thats why I post in Other Apps cos i dont fit into any other gallery with that stuff. Stacey

abmlober ( ) posted Sat, 02 March 2002 at 7:05 PM

Slynky - I think I'll continue posting in 2D. I feel comfortable there, often like what others do there and let myself inspire a bit.

Audire has very interesting Fractal gallery and an equally fascinating request! I'd love a Fractal Forum. Fractal textures are the sweetest! I've DL'd many, many, many, many freeware Fractal Engines(For lack of KPT, etc. knowldge), with the help of random Renderosity Forums and have achieved minimal results... A Fractal Gallery would be the perfect compliment! "One of the disadvantages of fractal software is that at the beginning it is very easy to churn out large numbers of not very interesting images in rather er ... psychedelic colours - and there are times when fractal newsgroups etc can get flooded by enthuisiastic beginners posting them - I would hate to see that happen in a gallery here." Is a load of it, close minded and otherwise colorless! A Fractal Forum and Gallery would make way for thousands of amazing uploads! =}|> ) "perhaps the reason there aren't many fractal images at renderosity is because there isn't a specific gallery."...Huh-huh! Slynky-As I've said "...minimal results..", because I, as well as the others in this community, have never been in the know. I think this thread was started because the level Fractal Artistry is at for some Members warrents a pooling of techiques. =|> ) 8

actually, it is. thank you all so much for your input. please stay tuned for a huge announcement in the next few days relating to fractals. this time, i'll try not to jump up and down so much grin

cainbrogan ( ) posted Wed, 06 March 2002 at 6:12 PM

This is exciting! I've always thought Frctals were so interesting, then I got closer to 3D animatin and realized they were right up my alley! Fingers crosed! = )

Yeah, great idea, I like fractals! A fractal-forum is the first thing I'd like to see. And a gallery is a great idea too.
