Subject: Procedural textures in Vue?

jstro ( ) posted Sat, 02 March 2002 at 7:00 PM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 3:01 AM

I just saw that the February challenge goes until about mid-March, so I'm thinking of trying my hand at something magical or mystical. So I've started a couple of models. Now I am curious if I make a model that has several parts, can I assign the different parts different procedural textures In Vue? Part of my scene will be some large candle sticks. They are one model, but each is made of three parts; pole, sconce, and candle. I would like to assign the pole a wood texture, the sconce a brass texture and the candle... I'll work on that. Can I do that for the wood and metal parts in Vue, or would I be better off just painting a texture with PaintShop Pro? The reason I hope to do it in Vue is that I've never had much luck with metals in PSP, and was hoping to get a nice shinny brass from a Vue procedural. Suggestions welcome. jon

As long as the parts are different groups, sure. You can have a different material, procedural or otherwise, for each group. Rich

Yeah, Jon, what Rich said. In Vue, if you have an object with multiple materials assigned, each part of the model will be shown as a separate object in the group, in the World Browser, but it will only have one material for the whole thing in the Material Summary box, which will usually be called something like Object Default. In that case, you just unfold the group in the World Browser, and assign materials to your separate objects there, since if you use the Summary box, you can only assign one material to the entire thing. If you use a program such as UV Mapper, you can assign those materials to both Object and Material groups. The difference, for Vue, is that if an object has both Material and object groupings, the separate materials will show up the Material Summary and the World Browser. So it's often best to have both.

Oh, and in the Metals library in the Material Editor, there is a metal called brass. It's reflective quality seems about right, but I don't understand their choice of highlight color. I think it looks more natural with a very light pale yellow highlight. Same thing with all the other metals. Changing the highlight color makes a huge difference.

Thanks. I went back into my modeler and assigned all the various faces appropriate material names. Now I'm going into UVMapper to create the map. Based on what you said I will also assign each material as a group in UVMapper. jon

I've got a better brass material in my Vue Treasures. The one that comes with Vue never pleased me much. :)

Here's a link directly to the procedural metals page.

Thanks Varian. I'll give them a look. I just found to my amazement that there are no wood textures in the procedurals for Vue! Or am I missing something? I looked all over the place, hoping to find a nice oak, but no luck. :( I feel like I must be missing something. Surely Vue includes wood textures? jon

Procedural woods here. They need a bit of tweaking depending on the object they're applied to, but hopefully these will be a helpful place to start. :)

Thanks all. Lots of good info here. I'll try and quit asking so many questions for awhile and give you all a break. ;-) jon
