Probably a degenerate form of the word "Software"

Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!

And the z is meant to make it look "cool", sorta like "f u cn rd ths, u cn gt a gd jb" ads that once hung in the NY subways.

It's called d33d speak (dude) I know that the type of language is used heavily in online games like Everquest, DAoC, and UO, though I am not sure which started the trend. I do remember back in the old Commodore 64 days the terminology was used then too, though it was different in a lot of ways. I think it just comes down to what was already said, the people who use the terms think it sounds cool. I, for one am thrilled about d33d speak, because I know exactly who to avoid once I see it being used ;) JDexter

It's just kind of a trademark/trendy thing. Hackers typically used to used alternate spellings of words to identify themselves with other hackers. Warez, Romz, Linkz, Phreakerz. I guess its supposed to be rebellious or something. lol

It is the kiddie script verison of the word Wares... which is the net form of Software.

beav1 ( ) posted Wed, 27 March 2002 at 8:49 PM

It's also used to get around certain message boards that automatically kick out posts with certain words.(I think):)

Jackson ( ) posted Wed, 27 March 2002 at 11:36 PM

I watched the word evolve in the 80's with the old BBS's (Bulletin Board Services). There was a lot of file swapping over those systems, most of it graphics or shareware. 'Wares' was short for software. Pirates adopted the 'z' to replace the 's' as some sort of "insider" sign that the file was pirated software.

Another rule of thumb about D33D speak: Don't date anyone using it in emails. Feels kinda stupid to go out with someone who can't spell cool and use the letter f. Thanks for asking, Wanderer, I've been vaguely wondering about that myself :-) ~S

Isn't it amazing how so much that people think will make them "cool" actually makes them look like idiots who haven't the tiniest shred of a clue? snicker

Don't have the time to type this crap yourself? Try the leetspeak generator. Just cut-and-paste!
