Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 09 8:30 pm)
Yeah, I'm running 98SE... I've tried to stay away from upgrading to a diferent OS because I use the PC to play a few games as well. One of which has problems with anything above 98. Oh well, it looks like I'm gonna have to upgrade, I've just this minute lost another character due to this problem (I couldn't be bothered to save first)... It's driving me nutz! Thanks for your help guys Fang
I'm on Win98SE and I didn't have any problems of the sort until a couple of months ago. The problem deteriorated during the last month and I had to re-install Poser 4 after I had deleted all the libraries. After I re-installed it, I deleted the default libraries and installed only the stuff that I actually use. Poser 4 seems to work better now but it still hangs more often than 3 months ago. I'm not sure it's an OS problem as it used to work just fine in the past. If anybody knows the answer, please tell us! :-)
I've had the exact same problem. I have Poser on two machines: At work - P3 1Ghz, 256 megs RAM, Win98 SE, Pro pack, and this machine does exactly the same thing you mention. At home - AMD Athlon XP 1700, 768 megs RAM, Windows XP, Pro pack, and it NEVER has this problem. I had assumed that it was either the OS or the fact that my work computer has less processing "muscle" than my home PC, but the computer you're using is pretty close to my home PC, so that pretty much rules that out. Conclusion: In the year 2002, do you really want to be using a 4 year old OS? Time to upgrade.
I had the same problems rendering when I was running 98SE, I recently upgraded my OS to Win 2000 Pro. NO problems at all. It's been said that 2kPro isn't for gaming, but I've ran everything from The Sims to Diablo on it and it runs great (better than on 98 actually) If you don't want to go to XP, 2k Pro is definitly a viable option, IMHO.

Well yeah, if you have a big enough hard drive. Under 10 gigs it's not really worth it. (Yes there are still people with <10gig drives, I know quite a few) But that would be an easy work around for it. I didn't even think about that lmckenzie

Yes, personally, I'd rather use a second drive for dual-booting. Even an old 1.2 Gig or 800MB should work for Win98 and a couple of games if you have one hanging around. PriceWatch.com has 30GB drives for $54.00. Unfortunately, it's hard to just run Poser on 10GB if you're a compulsive freestuff collector.

30 gigs for 54...hrmm I've been debating on picking up a second drive (JUST in case knock on wood)

I've been using Poser since Poser2 came out and updated as soon as was finacially viable to where I am today running the Pro pack. I've been encountering problems lately (Just before I purchased PPP)Basically when rendering, sometimes the render progress bar appears and just sits there, normally when using MAT style poses for textures. The only way to get out of this is to Ctrl-Alt-Dlt and Shut Poser down (The amount of work that I've lost due to this and not saving (DOH!) is incredible! I now save before any render I do, but that's a pain as I'm sure you can imagine!) I'm running a P4 1.7gb with 512ram which I upgraded from an AMD of slightly less spec (The AMD pretty much failed on ANY render I did... My question is this, has anyone else encountered this problem and if it's known, is there a fix?
