"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
Thanks for the info, heyse! You may have seen the thread below about a banner contest for this forum. I'm also collecting links and will be creating a whole page of them, which will be able to be accessed through the announcements box above. I'm digging up as much non program-specific material as I can find. Hopefully we can have a few general tutorials, as well, in due time. General modeling monthly challenges would be cool, too. As it is right now, a few of the modeling forums have regular challenges, but nothing for someone using, say, Marble Clay or Anim8or.

The Light version of SoftCAD doensn't cost a thing. According to their website (and my experience) it's "not a demo, but a fully functional program" And the free program Pro-desktop (which is more CAD-oriented and is by PTC, the makers of Pro-Engineer) can be downloaded at http://www.ptc.com/products/desktop/index.htm.en
