Subject: To Patch or not to patch...

arabinowitz ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2000 at 11:03 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 9:48 AM

Anyone used the new patch? I DL'd it, and I got the Hair fix add-on, too. Frankly, I'm afraid to try them. Some of the messages here indicate some problems. If I install them, and they cause more grief than good, can it be easily uninstalled, or can the original poser be re-installed over it without problems? Thanks.

arabinowitz...don't do it! If you have the first beta patch, you're in good shape. The others just sound too buggy! But that first one was smooth. Wait for the final is my advice. -Darth_Logice

The first Beta is excellent, I haven't tried the second one because.... well.... I am kinda lazy :) I personally will probably wait until the final version now because the 1st beta patch fixed up all of my problems. -Trav

thanks darth. i don't have the first beta patch. Just the new one and the Hair-Fix. I think I'll wait. But, if you do install it, can it be repaired by Reinstalling Poser, or are you stuck with the patch and Hair Fix?

arabinowitz ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2000 at 11:28 AM

is there anyway I can get the original Beta? Thanks Traveler. I posted exactly the same time as you so I didn't see your message.

Arabinowitz: Ask around maybe someone has the original Beta zip still on their HD. I deleted mine :( -Trav

I have mine; it screwed up my library (couldn't open it!) when I installed it. I'm not at home right now, but e-mail me at my AOL address (IGiveIn@aol.com) and I'll see if I can forward the Zip.

arabinowitz, I have the Dec24 patch here if you want it post your email. Keep in mind it's about 7mb so it won't go to hotmail. AR

Being on the Beta list I had the original, original patch. This worked extremely well. I have downloaded but not installed the subsequent patches. I intend to wait for the "final" patch to be issued from the MetaCreations site before doing any additional updating. This is purely my personal preference and is not intended to be an instruction of any kind.

I've got the original patch, the newest patch and the newest patch fix!... I haven't installed any of them.. What I'd like to know is "does the first patch fix the floating shadow problems Poser 4 has?".... I think the new patch promises to fix the shadow problems but I see there are problems with the conforming hair etc, so I don't want to install this new patch... My biggest problems are shadows... ~Cindy

moushie ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2000 at 3:55 PM

Boy am I confused. I understand there was an original Poser patch, then second, with a final expected from MetaCreations. Is that so? I don't see any reference to forthcoming patches on MetaCreation's web site, just the year-old Poser3 fix. Also, I thought I read somewhere that MetaCreations is divesting itself of Poser ... Where can I get the whole story? Tom

Byte Me Ok ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2000 at 6:53 PM

Yeah I am too Tom... I still don't know if any of the patches fixes the shadows or not... I'm gonna have a collection here soon with all the patches I have on my hard drive.. sheesh... Probably best to wait for the final patch from Metacreations.. I think everyone is as confused as us... = ~Cindy

moushie ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2000 at 7:14 PM

That's part of my question, Cindy. WILL there be a MC patch? And what's a Beta? Tom

Byte Me Ok ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2000 at 7:33 PM

Beta means it's in it testing faze...Working out the bugs and such... Larry Weinberg (Poser Creator) said there would be a working Patch on the Metacreations as soon as the patch is debugged.... To read more about it go to Ghost Effects inc...----> Link to your right.... =) ~Cindy

arabinowitz ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2000 at 9:39 PM

I'm completely confused. The patch I DL'd thursday (Poser_402WIN_115) has bee replaced with a patch Poser_402WIN_115B (notice the B at the end). Anyone know what the heck is going on with that? I think at this point I'm going to wait until the final patch comes out. Sheesh. -arabinowitz

Byte Me Ok ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2000 at 10:28 PM

I think there are 4 patches that have come out now... But who's counting?...=) ~Cindy

Kevin ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2000 at 11:37 PM

The number of patches and the reinstalls needed between them is one of the reasons that the debugging and patch development process is not generally done as publicly as Larry has needed to do here.

Byte Me Ok ( ) posted Sun, 23 January 2000 at 12:04 AM

This is true, Kevin.... I see a lot of people are getting confused in the process including me.. BUT I must add I appreciate Larry's efforts and all the hard work he's doing trying to get a patch out here that works.... I think that should be said outright... It's his baby and I trust whatever he does puts out here is with the greatest interest in the users of Poser... The forum is the perfect place to test these patches and we are gettin good feedback from the ones who have bravely put the patches to test...It's all appreciated.... =) ~Cindy

CEBrown ( ) posted Sun, 23 January 2000 at 10:06 AM

I'm just wondering if MC had changed its name to BetaCreations would they still be making Poser? :-)

arabinowitz ( ) posted Sun, 23 January 2000 at 11:52 AM

First off, I agree that larry should be commended for his dedication to both poser and the people that use it. I'm just confused about which is the lates patch, and what the issues with it are. (i.e. does thw 115B patch need the hair fix marked "for the brave") Basically is it worth installing or waiting for the "final" patch? ~arabinowitz

Byte Me Ok ( ) posted Sun, 23 January 2000 at 12:49 PM

I don't know, I think I will wait for the final release myself and keep reading the threads about the problems... I'm as confused as you Arabinowitz about all the patches... I'm not sure if the lastest corrects the hair conforming problem or not.. Hopefully someone who has downloaded and tried all the patches will be able to shed some light on all this for us.....=) ~Cindy

If you're into the beta environment (problems, crashes, reinstalls etc.) for the thrill of the bleeding edge then get it. Otherwise wait.
