Subject: Poser rendering performance

Is there any way how increase performance of rendering in Poser? I have PC PIII660/256MB and the rendering dont start sometimes. I have nvidia geforce 2MX. Is posible to use the 3D acceleration of this card?

wich OS ? XP,98.... if not XP->upgrade For more see some older message laurent

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 04 April 2002 at 6:20 AM

Poser doesn't use 3D acceleration. Given the rate at which 3D hardware is evolving, I hope that Curious Labs addresses this omission someday. The only ways to really increase performance are to upgrade the processor and/or add more memory.

You can increase your performance by "getting serious." Graphics work demands every bit of your computer's power. Memory and hard drives are cheap these days. My computer is maxxed out at 512MB of SDRAM. I have a 30GB hard drive devoted totally to Poser, the program, my Poser art. I have Windows XP Home Edition. It's the best operating system for Poser that I've found so far. Ron

The OS is, in my opinion, the single most important factor in Poser rendering success/failure. Win98 is notorios for hanging during renders, I've seen it many times myself. You'd see a big improvement by going to XP, but if nothing else then at least get Windows 2000. Also, like Ron said, the more RAM the better, and RAM is so cheap these days...

I LOVE my Mac G4 (it's only the 466, but w/ tons o' ram, and more on the way!); it almost never hangs while rendering (OS 9.whatever). Still, I always save before hitting "command R"--lol! My problem is the low res render quality--72 ppi? Puh-lease!

Gort ( ) posted Thu, 04 April 2002 at 11:01 AM

Orphea, I use the PC version of Poser 4, and while I do my test renders at the default 72dpi, I usually go up considerably for the finished product. Does the Mac version not allow you to change the dpi setting? In the render settings, just click on the 72dpi box and type in the resolutiom you really want.

Gort ( ) posted Thu, 04 April 2002 at 11:34 AM

Hmm, my renders are generally pretty big anyway... another possibilty.. you should have an oportunity to set the compression quality as well... I think this pops up when you save... the default is 75, use 'no compression' or better yet, switch to .tif as opposed to .jpg. The tif filetype also carries an alpha channel with it (when rendered over background color)which is extremely helpful when layering renders in PSP or whatever. I generally get as good or better a resolution as I can use. Maybe someone more Mac familiar can help.

For DPI just change it in your image editor, with "Resample" or the equivalent off. It makes no difference to the image quality, just specify the size you want in pixels. RAM isn't that cheap now - I just bought a third 256MB SDRAM for my new motherboard for 75, last autumn I got two the same for 50 - 300% inflation!

cyber-organic ( ) posted Thu, 04 April 2002 at 12:26 PM

RHaseltine, go to www.pricewatch.com They have 256MB SDRAM for as low as $34 (american) and 256MB DDR RAM is under $50...

RHaseltine ( ) posted Thu, 04 April 2002 at 12:50 PM

Oh well (kicks self). Actually it was Crucial, so I wasn't expecting cheap - it was more the scale of the rise I was commenting on rather than the absolute value.

JVRenderer ( ) posted Thu, 04 April 2002 at 1:06 PM

I use 600 p/i , and sometimes 720 p/i , it doesnt have any effect on render time whether you set it at 720 p/i or 72 p/i. I've done a unscientific test on this. I preferred the higher resolution setting because I print some of my work. just my $0.02 JV :)

A few months ago I got 256MB of SDRAM, for half what I'd paid for it a bit before that. I think the price was $28, and they delivered it overnight for free. I was thrilled, and now my memory is maxxed out!

TygerCub ( ) posted Thu, 04 April 2002 at 4:14 PM

Before buying new software or hardware to increase the performance of Poser, try this... Turn off all the shadow functions of the lights that do not need to cast shadows. Unless you are inside an area that requires multiple shadow angles, these shadow options are not needed, will not add to the picture's visual beauty, but WILL SLOW YOUR RENDER TIME DRAMATICALLY. That is because every shadow of every light on every object must be calculated and drawn. This works great for me. I have a PIII, 500mh, 256RAM machine and Poser would choke constantly before I learned this silly trick. Now my render time is cut to a FIFTH what it used to take! Good luck!

Someone also mentioned that if you turn off the little man animation that walks while rendering in Poser, you will gain some speed. Just delete status45.avi from the: C:Program FilesMetaCreationsPoser 4Runtimescripts directory. I tried it and gained maybe 5%. It's noy much, but it is something.

There was a post about "CPU test" and different speed of rendering the same pz3. I just changed my Duron800 with XP1600 and the time has reduced from about 85 sec to 47 sec(Win 98, 256MB, GeforceMX)I still try to see a diferrence from SoftQuadro. Win98 work worst with more than 256MB RAM! Cicero
