Subject: Is there a need for Modeled Lashes???

Hello!

After months of learning modeling from my bro Viomar,
I'm ready to bring stuff out(I think..).

My first attempt is "Real" Lashes for Vicky that
do not require Trans map!

Therefore, look good from any angle & close-ups!
And also solves the problems of "TransLashes" when importing
in other apps like c4d & Max.....

I made a simple morph to adjust the curve, so they can
work with most shapes of the Eyes...
Unfortunately, i can't find a way to make them follow the
head, once you apply poses to the figure!

Yes, they are parented to the head... I've also tried to
simply incorporate them into the head mesh. But, that changes the vertex count. And therefore renders all existing
head MTS useless!

So, if you want it, Leave me a message here.
Also, would require someone to host it!

Tada!

Anik

I think they look good. What is their file size in kilobytes/megabytes? If they are parented to the eyelids in some way, they might work okay.

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Sun, 07 April 2002 at 11:51 PM

Well, right now, they are 10K Polygons! The final ones will be less then 1K Polygons. I used a 4 sided Cone for each strand. But, i think that 3 sided ones will suffice... As for the size of the file: about 245K(Estimated). Thing is, since Eyelids are not a bodypart, i cannot parent to them. Unless, i'd make a new "Group" for those... Hmmmm.. I'll have to try that! Thanks for the Idea! And i just noticed that they are too regular in spacing & Shape! I'll fix that too. Anik

They do look good!!

Site Admin Online Now!

Very nice, you may want to check out Yamato's eyelash prop for Posette and his separate one for his characters (more morphs included). One thing I notice is that the density of the lower lashes is never as much as the upper ones something that most translash maps makers never consider. Yamato has made, IMO, the most realistic lash prop around but for Posette so I'm mentioning it in case you want to have a look before you proceed more with this.

Thanks Kalypso! Marco must have them somewhere here.. I'll check them after i'm done! ;-) I like to solve puzzles like that... And you are correct! I forgot to lessen the lower ones density! Anik

They look good.... congrats! Keep us posted!

Is this going to be for Vicki or Steph?

Patricia ( ) posted Mon, 08 April 2002 at 3:53 PM

I think these are a great idea whose time has come! And thank you for not falling into the 'too-regular' pitfall. One of my favorite reference photos for hand-painting eyelashes is a closeup of Sara Michelle Geller....she has fabulous eyes. I f you look in a women's fashion magazine, you can see some closeups that show the natural way that eyelashes criss-cross at the tips, making for a "starry-eyed" look that only Cake 1 seems to be able to do........check out her eyes.

FishNose ( ) posted Mon, 08 April 2002 at 5:34 PM

Very nice! Keep going, this is gonna get interesting! I would suggest making the cones a whole lot fatter, especially at the roots. Hair that close up is pretty thick. Also, if the strands are too skinny they won't show up at all in a render that's more than a couple of feet from the face. :] FishNose

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Mon, 08 April 2002 at 6:51 PM

Thanks for all the ideas!! Indeed, Patricia! I have a very HiRes Scan of SMG to look at!(An ad for maybeline). And the tips do criss-cross! This isn't my final version! And yes Dave! I'm making morphs to fit all characters except(Dina, cause she already has Similar ones!). That too occured to me, FishNose... Thank You all for the input! Once i've resolved how to make them follow the head better, i'll find someone to host them. I've thought of saving them as Hair(Which would solve it). But, as soon as someone loads A "Real" Hair prop from the library, then the Lashes would disappear... :-( In the End, if you don't mind adjusting them manually yourselves. Then i could post sooner a version... Later! Anik

Excellent job indeed, and as you've said... these aren't your final verions, but you may want to consider having a morph that will "thicken" the lashes. The lash widths should be about as thick as the eyebrows and it looks as though it is finer then the eyebrow here. Also if you look closely at your eyelashes, there are two layers that cross into each other rather then just a single layer of hairs. I would request that you make a morph that will straighten the lashes if you haven't already done so. I think it looks fantastic. Keep up the great work. This is kind of a strange and unusual method, but have you thought about making the lashes into a conforming figure? One easy way to do this might be to just incorate the lashes into a low density mesh that you make invisible with a transmap or grouped separately so it could be selected and made invisible. Sort of a dummy head that could be parented to the real head... I know it's kind of out there as far as solutions go. Good luck, visualkinetics

Visual, Lots of Morphs to work on: Thickness, width, Straight, curled, Eye Movements & Shapes, etc... Well, Making them as a figure occured to me about an hour ago! :-) Maybe use the an existing CR2 as a Base? The part about 2 layers??? If you are refering to leftUp most corner of the leftEye, then it's simply a Bug in the Skin Texture. I'll post a WireFrame of them, so you'll see exactly how they are constructed. Thing is, i didn't make a base for them. Meaning none of the strands are connected... I might have to rethink that... And i must experiment some more, to get the lowest poly count possible. I want them to be usable by everyone! :-) Later! Anik

Just wanted to let those interested. That i've solved
the "Following the head" problem...

I've got a working cr2 for Vicky...
Now, to do Mike & Stephanie's.

Then, it's on with the final "Cleanup" of the mesh.
And add more morphs(Which will probably be packaged
seperately, to alleviate the size of the file.)

Cause, unless i incorporate my lashes directly into Vicky,
there's no way to make the Lashes follow the Eyelids, when
she blinks, etc... Well, actually. Not true!
Using EMC, would make them follow automatically!
But, that is beyond my capabilties for now!

So, thank you for all those that made suggestions
for improvement!

Next time, i post a reply will be to announce they are ready!

Then, to find a host! ;-)

Later!

Anik

If you don't want to create eyelid groups and parent the lashes to those groups, then you can make opening/closing lash morphs to approximate the position of the opening/closing eyelids.

FishNose ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 2:24 PM

Anik I can help you with hosting. Send me a zip when you're finishe. I'll dump it onto the server and send you a link you can use to put this up in funstuff. Bandwidth no prob. (Don't suppose the file will be very big?) :] FishNose

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 2:36 PM

Yes, Nyar! Morphs will simulate almost every possible shapes the eyes can have... :-) Thanks FishNose!! I'll message you about the final size! There will be 2 files: The Mesh & Cr2(Zip1) The Morphs(Zip2) Since, i'm still in the process of "Reducing the mesh to it's lowest manageable size, it's hard to tell you the size at this moment. Patience Please! I'm busy caring for my Newborn! ;-) Tada! Anik

FishNose ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 2:45 PM

Cool.... The important thing, after all, is to get it right, so just drop me a line when you're all done. :] FishNose

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 5:20 PM

Well, i've sent the File to FishNose & Helen for Inspection! Once, it meets their approval, they'll appear in FreeStuff! Thank You Again FishNose for Hosting them soon! ;-) Tada! Anik
