Subject: help please - how to join renderosity?

firefly ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 8:18 AM · edited Sat, 03 August 2024 at 5:03 PM

My boyfriend would like to join Renderosity and has tried but does not receive an email of anykin, verification or other from the "join" application. I've tried to "invite" him from my profile through the renderosity "invite" application and neither of us have received an email. Who do I go to for help on this one?

RimRunner ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 9:13 AM

This is one way to contact them. The other would to be: Send and e-mail to: Admin@Renderosity.com As I said though, they check here too, so someone should be along to help you out shortly. :)

The doctor says I have way too much blood in my caffeine system.

firefly ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 9:22 AM

Thank you RimRunner. I'll keep checking back here then. God knows their email boxes must be overflowing enough already (smiles). I will keep note of that email addy though for any other "just-in-cases"!

Sipapu ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 11:57 AM

Firefly, is your bf using an IP addy or a web-based one? I ask because I recently discovered that Yahoo is holding on to all my e-mail now instead of forwarding it. Last night I discovered a HUGE stash of ebots there.

JeffH ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 12:56 PM

Yes, use a real e-mail address. Hotmail and Yahoo may not work.

firefly ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 1:16 PM

Thank you both for your replies. Sipapu, how did you discover that? JeffH, why is that, any idea? Does renderosity not want to recognize web-based email addies or require a specific IP? Or, are you surmising the web-based email addies are dev-nulling ebot mailings? This sounds like it's a known issue. Is there a work-around? The reason I ask is because the popaccounts provided by our ISP is not at all reliable. Their mail servers are down more than up :( The popaccount I use is actually provided au gratis by my employer aside from my work addy.

JeffH ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 1:34 PM

Yes, Renderosity recognizes those e-mail providers, but they reject e-mail from Renderosity as "Spam".

Supposedly hotmail can be re-configured to accept the ebots.

firefly ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 2:16 PM

ok, Thanks again JeffH. We'll figure out something else to do :)

Sipapu ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 6:41 PM

Well, I had Yahoo automatically forwarding my e-mail. A couple of weeks ago they sent me an e-mail saying they would be charging for this starting on what I thought I remembered as April 15 or 25. Musta been April 5, though, because when I realized I was missing a whole lot of e-mails, I went in to take a look, and there they were, just sittin' in my in-box. I don't think Yahoo considers Rosity's ebots as spam, though. All those ebots were in my incoming folder there. But I also haven't set any filters at Yahoo, since I've let the filters at my real e-mail addy take care of that.

firefly ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 7:51 PM

Gee, sounds like all the free mailers are looking for ways to make money. Hotmail is starting to lock accounts if they exceed 2mb and sends an advert for a larger box if you pay! Anyways, we put the login through a "real" email account and have discovered what the problem is. There actually seems to be two problems. Mail RFC's state there are specific required fields in an email. I believe they are: from, to, date and message ID. At least these are the ones that most mail servers require. Problem #1: the ebot script does not use the "to" field. A lot of mail servers and services require this as unspecified email is the first to get filtered. Problem #2: the word ebot is one word that is filtered hugely from various mail servers, another item filtered out for first line defense against spam. I expect this problem will grow given the trend to filter increasing amounts of spam. An idea worth thinking about would be changing the name ebot@renderosity to signup@renderosity and etc... Also, get the script to add a "to" line. Ok, you can wake up now (big grin)

Sipapu ( ) posted Sat, 13 April 2002 at 8:27 PM

LOL! OK, here's the second part that I hadn't bothered to tell you about. Once the ebots hit my IP's mail server, because of those very things you pointed out, they're tossed into a spam folder. I have the option of providing the names of lists I subscribe to, but even including ebot@renderosity in that group doesn't do the trick. The result is that I have to go to the web-based page for my account and wallow around in all that spam to find things I actually want. Now then, I could do away with the spam folder altogether, but then I would have tons of spam coming through to my e-mail client. Since I have a slow connection, that can take forever, what with all the message rules it would have to follow. So I can't win, in other words. But that's OK. I just ate a big bowl of ice cream and feel better now. ;-) It does seem that it would be helpful if Rosity would change their ebots.

Sweets..... hmm, maybe I have some left over easter chocolate.... licking lips... Ok, now the secret is out!! Jeff or Clint, feel free to jump in here and tell us someone is going to be correcting that wayward little mailbot script (big smiles) pretty please??? I wonder how many artworld einsteins are looking to join up and have gotten frustrated and given up instead. That would be too bad :(

JeffH ( ) posted Sun, 14 April 2002 at 12:17 AM

Send an e-mail to admin@renderosity.com with all the member info and they can enter it by hand.

firefly ( ) posted Sun, 14 April 2002 at 10:23 AM

Thanks for the offer JeffH, we already got him added by using a different email address. This isn't really about hand-adding people anymore, it's about correcting the renderosity script as noted in the thread! How many people on average sign-up on any given day. Multiply this be at least 2 and you have the figure of potential members. Now, I'm not sure what the math is of those members for making purchases is but to me that is a lot of potential Market Place customers that are also being dismissed by the current ebot mail system. You can see how this snowballs.......... From a marketing standpoint look at how many people are NOT seeing the adds and sponsors. Would'nt it be cool at sponsor renewal time to have doubled the size of viewers to the Bondware, Curious Labs and Worldbuilder branding? What's really sad though is when you stop and think about all the people who weren't able to sign up. They go away with a bad impression of renderosity; lame, elitist or broken..... This is really, really not good. Some of those people could be potential employers, sponsors etc. It might be worthwhile to copy this thread to the rest of the admin for their input or to the person(s) who look after the mail scripting. um, sorry to be your thorn of the day...

I use hotmail for my Renderosity stuff and I always receive the ebots.

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 3:16 PM

Can you give an idea of how you have it configured? We get e-mail all day long asking why ebots are rejected from hotmail.

Sue88 ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 5:54 PM

Hi Jeff, I checked my hotmail account and this is how it's set up: Go to Options, then select "Safe List" in the "Mail Handling" column. Type this: ebot@renderosity.com in the text box. This is one way of doing this. The other way is to go to the "Junk Mail" folder, select an ebot from Renderosity, and click on "This is not junk mail". This will take you to another page where you can choose the option of adding these ebots to the Safe List. I hope this helps! :)

firefly ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 8:33 PM

I'm posting this on behalf of magetek. He got signed up but is now having difficulty posting too! He's tried twice and gotten bumped back out of the thread to the forum board. firefly end. Magetek start: I have tried that as well as turning off the junk mail filter settings. Hotmail will still not accept messages from here. Same thing with Excite. Most correctly configured mail servers will not accept mail messages without a To header field as the message is technically incorrect. Luckily (in this case) my ISP doesn't know how to spell the word configure much less implement it so I managed to sign up using one of my accounts from them. Usually messages are not placed in a user's dropbox immediately but go through one or more mail relays first and/or may have further processing done on them. Without the To field there is no way for the relay agent or processing agent to know who the message is destined for. You can test this by telneting to your SMTP server and typing the following: (Replace somedomain and someuser as appropriate) ... start session ... HELO somedomain MAIL FROM: someuser@somedomain RCPT TO: someuser@hotmail.com DATA Test . ... end session ... The above message will not get processed. ... start session ... HELO somedomain MAIL FROM: someuser@somedomain RCPT TO: someuser@hotmail.com DATA To: someuser@hotmail.com From: someuser@somedomain Date: Mon, 15 Apr 2002 12:00:00 -0500 Subject: Test Test . ... end session ... The above message will get processed even with junk mail filters turned on. Additionally using the address ebot@renderosity.com for sending signup links and notices to ones users is asking for trouble. I can see a lot of mail servers and/or email client rules set up to filter out the word 'bot'. I have quite a few filters set up on my server and bot is right near the top of the list. It may be better to use signup@renderosity.com or registration@renderosity.com for example for new users. It's a simple change (one line addition) to the mail script so I don't see what the problem is here. I agree with firefly about the loss of users. Most aren't going to want to change their (already working) email client settings in order to receive email.

Magetek ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 8:37 PM

I'm not having difficulty posting, the darned board is ... grin...

firefly ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 8:52 PM

(grinning) hmmm, he (Magetek) thinks that renderosity has a "verbosity" allowance just for me!! Geez!

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2002 at 11:01 PM

Thanks Sue88..

You're welcome, Jeff. :)

firefly ( ) posted Tue, 16 April 2002 at 5:20 PM

Jeff, have I ps'd you off or have I frightened you. Or, is it possible that none of the above posts interest or apply to you. If any of the surmises in the first sentence are applicable a quick and simple post from you stating such would have been a good thing. Being blatantly ignored is frustrating. I have deliberately tried to keep my posts light, cheerful and as helpful as possible. Now I'm getting down right ticked. Brenda (aka firefly)

JeffH ( ) posted Tue, 16 April 2002 at 7:24 PM

I'm confused by this post. I passed the info you gave me on to the programmers.

firefly ( ) posted Tue, 16 April 2002 at 9:24 PM

I'm not a mind reader Jeff, all you needed to do was let me know that. I thought you were giving me the brush off. Still kind of think that. There are a few threads through out the forums that are talking about various mail/filter/bot problems. What was suggested above will most likely solve most of the other problems too. No need to reply to this post at all.

A question? I'm confused on the bit about not having anything in the "To:" field. It seems to me that I've always had something in the "To:" header field on my ebots from here. I went back and checked a few older ebots that got stuck away in one of my archive folders just to make sure things haven't changed recently, and it's identical to ones I've gotten today in those fields. Here's a quick screencap. Am I misunderstanding what you're saying about the header fields?

The message you're showing is one generated by a posting reply. The one I think has problems is the new user message. Here's a sample of the headers from a new user signup I tried 5 mins ago. You'll notice that there's no "To" field in the MIME headers. (email address is masked) ... start headers ... Ah. Ok. Yeah, it's been a long time since I've seen one of those from here.
