Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Shadownet.. I've done something similar with my own Poser directory once it got over 7Giga with less than just essentials installed!:o) I took all libraries out on my C drive on a dir starting with 00 so it comes top of the list and easiest thing to locate.. then I subcategorized in it all! Characters, poses, props etc! Seemed the only way to tide up a bit that endless mess.. :o) I also use P3doExplorer myself to find what I need and then I just send by right clicking on the thumb to the appropriate folder in my Poser dir to use! Oh.. just a few named 000 or !!! there too just to keep them sort and cleared out fast every now and then! LOL Hopefully Poser 5 WILL allow us to browse through deeper directories than just one! Fingers crossed! :o) Rena

Hi beryld, for some reason it has not worked so well for me. Perphaps it is the way I have my textures organized or something. Poser prompts me to death trying to find them unless they are in a Poser runtime texture folder. I put them anywhere else and I have to manually locate each and everyone before Poser will apply it. If you got it working though, you encourage me to keep trying so maybe I'll get it to work. Thanks. Rena, I sort of do that with the file naming but silly me I am cutting and pasting via win explore. I did not think to use the send to command. LOL! Hope you are right about Poser 5. :O)
Actually, not sure how a larger hard drive will help. I actually have lots of free disk space and room for Poser to breath. Plus over a gig of ram. Prob I was having was it took so long for Poser to do anything because it has to cycle through all those library files and stuff. Mine had swollen to well over 10 gb. And waiting to see what PoserBooost will be able to do for me. Anything that will help speed up Poser and/or free up wasted memory use sounds like a good idea.
Ah... PoserBooost will fix this for you. With PoserBooost, you split out your library folders into categorised chunks or "banks" which you then "switch between". This limits Poser to a particular bunch of entries at a time! For instance, you create a "bank" for all your Vikki poses, one for your Mike poses etc and Poser will only see the bank you have "switched" to in it's libraries. Howard:)
Actually, getting back to my comment about the texture folders. Do they really cause Poser to bog down like the library folders? I have been working under the impression that they do, but now that I have been doing some test comparison between my stripped down version of Poser and the straight out of the box Poser install, I am not so sure that texture files come into play - accept when Poser goes looking for textures. So there may not be a need to relocate the textures afterall. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

It is new utility Hogwarden is developing for the MP. There is a thread here about it: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=661631Attached Link: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12356&Form.ShowMessage=663109
shadownet, check one of your cr2s and see how the textures are referenced. This was mentioned earlier (link). Don't know if that's part of the problem. I like to keep textures in the same folder as the character. I use the full path and it seems to work. The library thing can be done manually. You can have multiple library folders in the Poser directory and just rename the one you want active to "Libraries." You can even do this while Poser is running and then refresh/reload the display. If you rename "Libraries" so that Poser can't find one, it will recreate an empty structure complete with all the subfolders for you to populate. I'm sure PoserBoost will do all of this and possibly more from an easy interface so I'd wait for it. I haven't felt up to doing it manually myself."Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance." - H. L. Mencken
Thanks again for the feedback. Best I have been able to tell, only the library files lend to the bog. Geometries and textures get called up as needed. The library contents however get loaded into system memory. To me this tells me I can shuffle things around a bit in Poser and improve performance by limiting how much content from the libraries Poser addresses at one time. Sounds like PoserBooost does this very nicely, so....is it ready yet? :O)

Okay, we all know how bloated Poser can get. And we all know a few tricks to try and fix this. Add this one to the list for those of you who don't know it already.I have cleaned out most of my character library by renaming the cr2 as a pp2 (you can also make it a pz3 but I got mixed up doing that). I then store these and my prop library elsewhere. Since I am using ProPack I have png so it is easy for me to view the thumbs in Win2k explorer. I also use Yarps p3do explorer.
I only keep the basic figures and props I use in Poser now. Everything else I import using the Poser import Poser Document command on an as needed basis. This has helped me whittle down my bloat by nearly half.
Renaming the file extentions is a snap with the free utility called 1-4a rename.
Now if I could just figure out what to do about all those texture files.
