THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Setting up network rendering... Any help? (More details of setup)

I have to PCs running XP (Desktop and Notebook) connected by a USB cable. Bryce and Bryce Lightning recognize the existence of both computers in that the IP addresses of the machines show in the status windows and a reddish circle with a lightning bolt are present in whichever machine I set as the client. But either way I try it, the host computer isn't able to get data to the client computer.

Am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best to all,

Bob Deegan

The network uses TCP/IP to communicate, and I don't think that using what amounts to a null cable (USB) can use that protocol. Can you transmit files or anything else (non-bryce) between them using that USB cable? You might have to get a traditional hub or router and set up a network the traditional way rather than try to use just a USB cable. I can't imagine it working that way. I just got network rendering set up today at work, and it is definately worth your time...

you don't necessarily need a hub or router, depending on your setup. if you only connect to the internet via dialup, you should be able to just run a cat 5 patch cable between the two comps. if you are connected to the net through your network card, then a router is definitly the way to go(as vs. a hub) because with a hub, you need to set one computer up as a server. I have a netowrk set up at my home, and we use a router to connect all together, and to the 'net. Hope this helps, big_hoovie

You could also just do a simple peer to peer connection via a fast ethernet card in both machines. A cross cable is required in lieu of the standard ethernet link. Much simpler and you don't have to go through the whole setting up a hub mess. (Note this applies to only TWO machines) This is what I use to connect my laptop with my desktop.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Thanks folks! The Ethernet cards worked like a charm! Best to all, Bob Deegan
