Subject: Congratulations George Deep! (Poser Sighting)

jaybutton ( ) posted Fri, 26 April 2002 at 9:59 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 7:28 PM

I was thumbing through the latest edition of the Hero System (a role playing game) and I saw what I immediately recognized to be Poser artwork by George Deep. It was very good stuff, too. I particularly like the image of the flying woman. Anyway, I just wanted to say congratulations on getting your stuff published, though I realize that its not the first time for you. :) Jay

That's the 5th edition of Champions, right? I noticed it in the game store and didn't pick it up because I have 4th, and all the Hero supplements. I GM a viking campaign and run events at some conventions. The other reason I didn't look at it is because Stephen Long was listed as the editor and we disagree on a lot of stuff. He likes fighting and emphasizes how to build combat monsters. I like role-playing, and my players only occasionally get into battle (mostly if they were too short-sighted to see the other approaches to the problem at hand). This difference affects the way we go about building characters, and explains why all the useful skills are so expensive compared to combat levels. However, if it has Poser art in it, I should take a peek. Thanks for the heads-up. Carolly

Just how many of us here role play anyway? ;) I am a player (Hubby is GM) and we play D&D and V:TM (currently playing V:TM at the moment)

MissTara ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 1:40 AM

We don't have anyone locally that we know to play with, but my husband and I both like D&D and Shadowrun, and he like Gurps but I've never tried it. We got the stuff to play Gurps with Vampire rules but we haven't tried it yet.

ChromeTiger ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 2:16 AM

Ahhhh, Shadowrun...I haven't played that in years, even though it's the origin of my online identity. ChromeTiger was my matrix Persona, and my Elven Decker went by no other name...if you needed a datasteal done real quiet-like, you hired the Chrome Tiger... Other than Shadowrun, I've played and/or GM'ed on Star Frontiers, Boot Hill, AD&D (Including Greyhawk, Faerun, Krynn, Spelljammer, Ravenloft and Planescape), Deadlands, Champions, Marvel Superheroes, DC Roleplaying, Indiana Jones RPG, and a host of other, 'frankenstein's monster' systems (Homemade rules, with bits & pieces butchered from other games). Boy, those were the days... Dusts off his Fuchi Cyber-6 Maybe just one more run... :)

Me and the missus have played a fair bit of DnD and Champions mainly with some freinds.

I D&D, Marvel and WFRP. every tuesday... :D

BellaMorte ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 7:49 AM

LOL Strangelchilde. Way cool, all :). My Screen name started out as a D&D character, then we got V:TM so I took her into that and within a few days we couldn't play for quite a while so she became my internet screen name instead :) I now have another character to have fun with ;). We just started up yesterday :) If my new computer hadn't just died, I would be in poser creating a visual of my various characters. Oh well. Two months to wait and counting :( Withdrawals have set in real bad as have been without my computer for a week now. Thank goodness for hubby's computer but it just ain't the same lol

Carolly, you're right, kind of. It is the 5th edition of the Hero system. The new edition of Champions is supposed to come out in August. Given Hero's history, we'll see how well they come to hitting that target date. ;) Yeah, I'm a gamer, too. I have been gaming on and off since I was in junior high school. Lately, I've been playing a lot of GURPS. I just love how flexible that system is. I can use it for anything. I have been invited to join a V:TM game this month. I normally stay away from the darker games, but there is really a good group of people in the game. I learned a long time ago that it is the people in the game that make it fun, not the system or setting, so I thought I would give it a go. Jay

Valandar ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 3:35 PM

Well, I think that it is safe to say that I have played at least one game of nearly half of every single RPG system out there... Games I've played on a regular basis, now or in the past: AD&D (1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions) BESM (Big Eyes Small Mouth) Palladium (RIFTS, Ninjas and Superspies, Robotech, etc) TORG Seventh Sea Legend of the Five Rings (Original and d20 version) DC Heroes RPG (system now owned by Pulsar and released as "Blood of Heroes") The old Marvel Superheroes RPG by TSR Star Trek: TRPG Mekton Mechwarrior Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Rolemaster Shadowrun Cyberpunk Champions (4th ed) Fuzion (an attempt by R Talsorion to combine Champions with the Interlok system [Mekton and Cyberpunk]) And probably a lot more that I'm not thinking of right now... and I have heard of nearly every single RPG out there. Even done work carving figures for Team Frog...

BellaMorte ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 4:47 PM

Neat Jay :). Hubby and I don't really set dark games in the V:TM (or maybe they just don't seem so dark) because we play whenever. Day or night :) Wow Valander. I haven't even heard of some of those lol. I gues I like D&D and V:TM the best. D&D I find easy and V:TM I see as a challenge because of the fight scenes and having to think like a vampire The other thing that attracts me to them is the artwork. A lot of them are really good :)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 5:58 PM

The ambience of a game is created by the players as well as the GM. Some players laugh and have fun, others take things very seriously, and still others try to milk the system and game for every tiny advantage to their own character. I try to create entertaining scenarios, and have been pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm of most of my players... and also by the direction they will take the "plot". OTOH, I've played in games where the GM tried to kill us every week, and my fellows learned that their job was to keep me alive while I figured a way out of the situation. I don't need that much adrenaline. I have also been fortunate to play with most of the folks who designed these games. One thing I learned early was to mix up the gaming system a little bit. This reduces the advantage some players might have from memorizing the books and adds needed variety when all the gamers are experienced. I ran a Hero System game at DunDraCon and the guys were all relaxed... until I asked them to roll percentile dice. They freaked when they realized that I'd developed a "whimsey table" similar to the one in Arduin's Grimoires... but it was fun for all. When I bought Neftis's Classic hair, I thought of doing a render of one of my characters. La Peri is a ninja ballerina. However, I don't yet own Vicki's catsuit, and that would be essential to both her costumes. Carolly

BellaMorte ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 7:24 PM

I know what you mean Carolly. We tend to keep our games light by joking around and wandering off topic every hour or so. Plus we sit at a table with decent lighting :). Some people jut take it toooooo seriously. It is just a game after all now I have to go and hide because the sun is coming up here ;) Your character sounds interesting. When you do get the catsuit, I would love to see your character :) My current playing character is an 11 year old Malkavian (loony lol). I had the GM help me with her creation so she would be an honestly created character LOL. I have a tendency to create to the way I see them rather than to the type of character she is to be lol. I look forward to creating her in poser too :)

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 7:45 PM

I have played (and still have copies of):

D&D (Basic, Expert, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Editions)
Almost every official campaign setting for D&D (Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Oriental Adventures, Dragonlance, Spelljammer, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Al-Qadim, Maztica, etc.)
Top Secret
Gamma World
Star Frontiers
Magitech (Amazing Engine)
GURPS
Champions
Shadowrun
ARS MAGICA
Mythus: Dangerous Journeys (a failed project by D&D creator Gary Gygax)
TORG
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness (the Palladium RPG)

Eventually I gave up on them all and devised my own game system, since none of the others were flexible enough to support the unique quirks of my campaign world (although GURPS came closest). Then Third-Edition D&D was released, and I discovered that the game mechanics are almost identical to mine. Spooky.

jaybutton ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 7:54 PM

Hey Carolly, I was at DunDraCon, too. I didn't run anything this year (its been a busy year), but a couple years back, I ran a GURPS Traveler game. Anyway, its a small world (or maybe Poser artists just have similiar interests :) Jay

BellaMorte ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 7:55 PM

Ooooooo Little Dragon!!! Is your copy of Gamma World an original (1st) edition?? Hubby is after a copy of it. LOL Hubby and I decided that the rules were nothing but a guideline so we took what we liked and made up the rest to fit in with the settings we played (this included modifying the character sheets) and as a result, we have a pretty good playing system :). With D&D, we played in the basic box set setting and in V:TM we are playing in the setting of North Queensland Australia (Hubby is from up there ;). We live in Brisbane Queensland)

Valandar ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 8:17 PM

Ah, Little Dragon, thanks for reminding me, I've also played these: Top Secret Gamma World (1st AND second versions) Boot Hill Deadlands Traveller GURPS Ars Magica All of the World of Darkness games (V:TM, M:TA, W:TA, C:TD, Wraith, and, yes, even the short-lived Streetfighter game) And I included TNMT, Palladium Fantasy, beyond The Supernatural in the Palladium umbrella. Oh, did I mention I have a Sci-Fi RPG I'm writing that s looking for playtesting groups?

ookami ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 8:48 PM

I play 3rd edition dungeons and dragons (d20). I currently am a player in 2 campaigns and am going to be DMing a Wheel of Time d20 game. Should be fun. And now that I'm seperated... I have plenty of free time.

BellaMorte ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 9:02 PM

Sounds cool ookami :). I guess I am lucky that both hubby and I both play. He has been playing far longer than me though :)

ookami ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 10:50 PM

This time I think I'll find a woman who enjoys roleplaying games and computers.... think they exist?

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 27 April 2002 at 11:13 PM

Sorry, BellaMorte, my Gamma World is a 4th-Edition softbound, circa 1992. It wouldn't be for sale, anyway. You'd have to pry it from my cold, dead claws, as so many other would-be dragonslayers have tried.

Boy, were they disappointed when they discovered that we don't hoard gold any more ....

1st-Edition copies of Gamma World can occasionally be found on eBay, and you might also try these two sites for out-of-print games:

BellaMorte ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 12:25 AM

ookami - of course they exist. I'm one :) But I'm not available ;) sorry. No probs LD. No harm in asking ;). Thanks for the links though :)

ookami, Finding someone who shares your interests is essential to a happy relationship. Too many of my male friends have married women who didn't game or understand gaming and were as jealous as if the lure of dice had been another woman's perfume. If you go to conventions, you can find people in all age ranges who play games. This way you can also see if a potential partner plays fair even if fate is against her, or bitches and moans, and also how she accepts winning. Of course if she is enthusiastic and gracious and honest, you'll probably have to beat off her other suitors! I'd think that with a digital art show at DragonCon, you might even find someone who was an artist in addition to being a gamer. Carolly Carolly

Letterworks ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 11:23 AM

To chime in... Massive collection of Traveller in all of it's current versions. AD&D (ver. 2) GURPS, Twilight 2000, Boot Hill, Car Wars, and various others. It was Traveller that got me into 3D, Steve Jackson's Traveller books feature 3D artwork by someone I know from another mailing list. His work appealed to me so much that I invested in a used copy of RayDream, which lead to MetaCreations and Poser. Orignally I thought his would be a useful tool for gaming. Now it seems to eat up most of my time. mike

ookami ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 1:09 PM

Carolly, I guess conventions are as good a place as any to find someone who likes gaming... but like you said... I have to fight my way past the hoards of other RPG geeks...
