Outside of the imported 3DS model, this scene was done %100 in Vue! I'm betting there's nobody out there who can figure out exactly how I did it! -SMT

Hmmmm...you took a picture of your boat and then overlayed it on a max scene? Nah, you probably didn't do that! Functions on a terrain, causing waves? is that Guitta's water texture? OK, I'll bite--- what's the trick? --Mike BTW, Steve, that water is amazingly clear and simply gorgeous! Boat's cool too, but my own personal boat makes it kinda look like one of those little ones you can rent at some of the State parks, and.......yeah right....No, i do not have a boat-- not any more. used to, but I think now some State park is renting it out...LOL

Nice boat and the picture is great. My guess is that you have used a couple of terrains. One for the water and one for the foam.... am I close?? Have fun Neil

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 3:54 AM

Your both close. Hint: There's only one terrain and outside of the boat, I din't use anything that can't be made from the elements that come stock in Vue. -SMT

Chrome and mirror material combination?

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 12:03 PM

Getting colder :o Hint number 2: it's a single, stock, non-mixed material. -SMT

Well, I'm tryin' 'em all right now, as we speak. But I'm not getting anything like what you are. My first guess then would have been Mercury, but that doesn't seem to be doing it, possibly because I haven't tried to replicate the lighting. Are you editing it's color production parameters? Now you REALLY have me curious....guess I'm gonna try some more...

MikeJ ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 12:24 PM

I'm getting alot of things which are similar, sort of, but nowhere near that reflective. And I've tried all the metals, glasses and liquids, and everything, including altering the lighting, and the atmosphere, and even going so far as to remove the ground plane, thinking it was possibly interfering with the reflrections. I'm baffled, Steve!

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 1:37 PM

...ok, I won't keep you in suspense. 1. New scene, selected, "No Atmosphere". 2. Deleted ground plane. 3. Created water plane, assigned material, "Foamy Water" 4. Switched to top camera. 50mm, and pulled it way high to get a long shot directly down on the water plane. 5. rendered 1200 by 1200 image at ultra settings. 6. Saved bitmap image. 7. New Scene, selected, "Soft Sunshine". 8. Created new terrain. 9. Opened terrain editor, reset terrain, imported saved bitmap and applied to terrain. 10. Assigned material, "Foamy Water" to terrain and scaled material up by a factor of 6.0. 11. Scaled terrain to be the approximate size of the ground plane. Reduced "Z" scale till it was down to mild rolling waves. The result is a wave filled terrain with large areas of white foam. I imported the yacht, placed it in the forward section of one of those foam patches, adjusted the main camera, and rendered. Easy, no? -SMT

...may vary! I saved the terrain, if anyone wants it. BTW: forgot to mention that I moved the terrain up and away from the ground plane. -SMT

Wow! I Have GOT to try that, and you bet I will be doing so right away. In all honesty, I've been slightly dissapointed every now and then with some of the water materials, in that I can never get them to be so shiny. So thanks Steve...that's a really clever technique there. Sure, I wouldn't mind having the terrain, and it would definitely be put to good use. Thanks! Mike mowenj@mediaone.net

I'll send it to you when I get home tonight :) -SMT

Thanks again, Steve!

Fox-Mulder ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 2:15 PM

Why don't you post them in Freestuff? I haven't seen anyone else with such nice looking water effects in Vue...

smallspace ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 7:24 PM

Hi Fox. I don't have and don't want a website or any web space for that matter. It's just something I don't want to do. If someone else wishes to host and post the file, it's fine with me. It is 1.2 meg zipped, however. (it's a REALLY BIG terrain!) -SMT
