Subject: Anyone else having trouble downloading DAZ freebies?

Lyne ( ) posted Mon, 29 April 2002 at 12:37 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 8:20 PM

I have been trying for a LONG time now to download DAZ freebies... like Stephanie poses... and every time I get to about 3/4 of the download process it freezes up and just WILL NOT finish and I give up... I had trouble with my last order there and DAZ sent it to me on a CD... but I can't figure out why this is happening to me there... I have DSL connection, and can download items from here, and Poser World and various other places without a problem.. it's a frustrating mystery to me and I am missing all the freebie goodies.. and I know that I will have to wait until my 'wish list' for DAZ is large enough, then order it on a CD... but no freebies... heavy sigh. I am PC, high end machine, and like I said, DSL connection... just wanted to know if many others have this problem? Lyne

It's a pity we're not allowed to send on the freebies we have or I'd email them to you, I lost everything to a virus the other day and I can't download anything from daz now, but it's cause I don't have java on my machine, do you have it activated on yours? Rob

I'm just on a 56k modem on an ancient p2 I just use for surfing, and bought something like 30 megs of stuff last week so I don't think it's them, it may be your local provider. Usually if there is any problem it just cuts out, though I have had a screensaver on my pc in the past that seemed to lock up any downloads I had running.

I haven't had any troubles downloading from DAZ or Renderosity. I've had troubles downloading from other web sites, and most often it's turned out to be a problem at those sites. Is there any pattern to your download troubles? Is there a certain file size? Does it kick out after so many MB or minutes? Any kind of clue here? As for the DAZ freebies, they now have an archive section where you can get old stuff. Ron

I use real download, OK so it supports itself via adverts but seems innocuous enough. If I get a broken connection I can re-establish the link and continue where I left off. There's a free version and I can recommend it.

Anyone having trouble DL-ing the Stephanie poses in free archives at DAZ, send an IM here at R'osity to Don. Include your E-mail address and I will send you the 33 Steph poses. 476 kb zip file. DAZ won't mind. I did the poses. Free there and free from me. -Don

Those who are having troubles might want to check their computer's system resources. So many of today's PC's have those god-awful Winmodems. Those Winmodems require a lot of your computer's resources. So many of our computers have too many items loaded in startup. That drains your resources and causes this type of problem. Look down in the Systray, by the clock. How many icons are there? Those are programs either running or waiting to run. They rob your computer's resources, and help you get problems getting connected, staying connected, etc. There are more details related to analyzing and fixing the problem. It's probably more than we should cover in this forum. This type of information comes from my job as an Internet Technical Support Engineer. I already helped one person today who hadn't been able to upload to her gallery for a month. Ron

Okay.. I do have Java in fact I got every bell and whistle I could.. and am using IE6... I have 512 ram, and NO TSR's running.. got a tech for a hubby who keeps my machines slim and mean running... I even turned OFF my fire wall, but no help there.. when I was talking to Dan Farr he said my machine did not like to "talk to" their server.. and it seems to still be true... oh.. and I had this download trouble before IE6 too, exactly the same. And yes, download stops (no matter size of file) at about 288 KB or so.. I find it odd that I CAN download from anywhere else in the world, quite litterally... so it is honestly a msytery! Thanks for your help all and I sure will send a note to Don, thanks, Don!! The archives for freebies don't help me.. it's still the same thing, on the DAZ servers.. freebies, products.. I wish I knew... Lyne
