Subject: Why does no one try this? (vampire eye trick)

Probably no one tries this because it can be rendered in Poser 4 only. You turn the texture off on the iris and set the object and reflective color to the brightest yellow, green, or red. For more intensity do the same with ambient color as well (the picture on the right). For a totally inhuman undead look, set the eyeballs and eye whites to black with brilliant white highlights. The iris trick gives you that "Salem's Lot" look. It is also good for cats. You could leave the iris texture turned on, but then the effect is hardly noticeable. If anybody can do this in Bryce I would sure like to see it. Also important - set every eye highlight to brilliant white - pupils eyeballs, eyewhites, iris. This gives nice wet eyes that catch higlights in Poser only renders, if the light is just so. Otherwise, eyes look lifeless if you ask me. I always set hair to a black highlight because glossy hair looks funny unless it's supposed to be wet; especially with blue or orange metallic highlights. (why is that so popular?) Don't mean to come off as opinionated since I have no special talent, but these questions have bothered me for some time. What do you think?

Scarab ( ) posted Mon, 31 January 2000 at 10:43 PM

I dont do it because: 1) I dont do vampires 2) It would frighten the sh*t out of my cat, who sits here and watches the screen while I'm working...and you know...work environment and all... Scarab <-the litter box is bad enough to deal with....

  1. you are more clever SOB than most...ok I said it...satisfied? Scarab <-means the clever part sincerely.....good work and idea...thanks for sharing it....

PS....I see she has a sister...wanna double date? Scarab <-suffers from polycythemia anyway....so what the hell...

Ah, simple ... no one else was imaginative or creative enough to think of it! Fantastic idea and I am grateful you shared it, Talos, since I have had thoughts of an image that I might actually be able to use this with.

Thanks casamerica, I certainly hope someone can benefit from this. Scarab, I like cats, but I don't own one. I'm something of a horror film expert, and I can get alot scarier than this, but I have no CG modeling ability. I have to do it all with lighting, textures, and other people's morphs and props. I did monster make-up puppets, masks, etc. for several years, so it's in my blood. Usually I'm so clueless in Poser compared to everyone that I can't believe I blundered into something that nobody tried. -Talos the Long-Winded (looking up polycythemia)

Yes, but would the hair of the undead have any kind of a sheen to it?...I like very much Talos' treatment here....and I too am an affeciando of horror films...God help the forum when I finally turn from my cute little chocolate and wine women to my darker images.... Scarab <-"Luke, ...I am your father!"....

....by the way...I dont really have a cat either...except a ceramic one...and when you can scare the sh*t out of a ceramic cat...buddy, you is ready for the bigtime.... Scarab<-sweeping up all the little marbles on the floor...

Yeeeeak! Very nice, very nice indeed - especially the one on the right. I'll have a look and see if I can duplicate this effect in Bryce and let you know. Meanwhile, if you've got any other little tricks like this - don't hesitate to share them :) Paul

I have tried it, I just haven't posted any pics of it ;-) -JH.

Allie, I just missed Bushi's eyes by a few days before he removed the goodies. Coulnd't find his link in time among my 200 Poser book marks. The angle of the head and eyes have to be just right to catch the light with my "custom settings". The slightest eye or head rotation, and I lose the highlights. Hair is often shiny, but I usually prefer no shine at all to the burnished brass/shiny platic I usually see in Poser. I even prefer the matte clay with lines drawn on, and I'm investigating better bump maps for hair for use with everything except the hair you created. Since I tried your version, I find everything else disappointing. I wish every darn hair style there is was transmapped (at least as an option). Eyelashes too.

Like the vampire from that movie Innocent Blood. You should do an animation and change the ambient color from say...yellow to blue to red. That would be cool

Talos ( ) posted Tue, 01 February 2000 at 7:36 PM

I remember that movie, and it's a great idea if I ever figure out how. (animated .GIF program I guess) I'm probably less clever than you suppose, but maybe I could learn. :-) If I do, I might change the character to look like the girl in the movie. (Anne Parillaud)

FALCON2 ( ) posted Wed, 02 February 2000 at 1:43 AM

IF you want to do this in Bryce, select the iris portion of the eye (you did leave grouping in place right? If not, use a tool like Pixel 3D to create groupings based on the vert points in the model instead), then select the material to be lit green (to match your pic), and fuss with the ambience. You can even place a wee little light in the hollow poser head =) Falcon

That's good to know, thanks!! (I'm not known for my Bryce brilliance) Light coming from the eyes looks so much better rendered rather that post-edited! Still working on the tutorials by everyone to get the skin and hair to look decent in Bryce, then I'll be all ready! ;-) -Talos
