Subject: Is Chat the slums of Renderosity? Can we have help here?

Valandar ( ) posted Wed, 01 May 2002 at 4:27 PM · edited Sat, 03 August 2024 at 12:09 AM

For two months, the inhabitants of chat have been having to put up with an abusive member. It is not enough that we put him on ignore, he will spam the room with clones (whose entrances and exits are not ignored by the ignore feature), and does what he can to disrupt chat. We are told by our fellow Renderosity members to "suck it up", and "Isn't that what Ignore is for?", yet the slightest abusive comment on the forums recieves immediate response, whether a warning or a ban, depending on the abuser. Earlier this afternon, the abusive chatter was in the Chat Room... I had posted the URL to a forum thread asking for advice, and the abuser answered the thread with what I took as a personal attack. Since the abuser had been complained about countless times by various chatters, I contacted ClintH directly, and told him about both the Chat Room abuse and the comment on my thread. I was told that the Poser Forum Moderators should handle it. Shortly after, the abuser edited his post on my thread, hopefully at the request of one admin or another. My question is this... if the abuse is taking place in MORE THAN ONE place on the site, why should I direct my complaints to a moderator (not an admin) of only one section? And why is it that REPEATED complaints about this individual have only resulted in a couple of temporary bans, and not a permanent ban? He does nothing except log on and abuse individuals here in chat, and as we saw, started to do so in the forums. Is Chat a ghetto? Are we second class R'osity citizens? Do the admins not care about chat? Or is there only selective enforcement of the TOS, only in the Forums and galleries, to heck with chat? Anyone?

Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!

Is Chat a ghetto? Are we second class R'osity citizens? Do the admins not care about chat? Or is there only selective enforcement of the TOS, only in the Forums and galleries, to heck with chat? hello, sorry to hear that members are abusing the system and making everyone else miserable. we know we've got to address the chatroom and are currently working with Spike, the manager of the moderators to find a solution to this. the way it stands, it's very difficult for us to catch the offending member 'in the act' and scanning through chat logs is a very time consuming and labor intensive venture. i've personally banned MANY MANY members who abuse the chatrooms... unfortunately i think a few take some sortof wierd unfathonable delight in coming back under new aliases and IP address to repeat their offensive behavior. threads posted to forums are typically dealt with by that forum's moderator. that is what they are there for... this is what Clint meant. finally, absolutely not is the chat room considered a ghetto, or any less important than any other place on renderosity. we are working on implementing some changes to the chat software which should help us relieve you of those member who cannot seem to stay within the TOS. also software to help the chat rooms work more efficiently and stay up 24/7. thanks audre

Yep, We are trying to get this worked out. Until we do, If a member is doing something in chat that breaks the TOS, Please copy the chat and send it to us so we can review and take action as needed. It's also best if we have chat logs from more than one member on this.

You can't call it work if you love it... Zen Tambour

Valandar, the behavior you experience in chat is what you'd have to expect. Chat rooms can quickly sink to the level of the worst member, so it's probably a good idea to avoid them if you're sensitive, righteous or you can't tolerate people who lack social skills.Message671422.jpg

This isnt a new issue or complaint for that matter. For the past 2 months possibly longer the chatroom visitors have been harrased on several occasions by the same abusive person. Several members have voiced complaints, sent in multiple logs, & even convinced a few moderators to come into chat to personally deal with and/or witness what was happening in the chatroom. The problem is nothing has changed. The same abusive member continues to stalk and harrass no matter how many chat logs are instant messaged &/or e-mailed. So please don't take this the wrong way when I ask how is the tos protecting me as a member in chat when nothing has really changed? Few thoughts for a temp solution: mod duties in the chat room during peek hours. Im sure the mods could use the time to unwind & get to know other members of the community a bit better while helping to maintain the peace. Make certain regular chat members offical chat room welcome staff with boot powers. That way there is a very good chance there will be someone in the chatroom that can handle the situation before it goes above & beyond a hassle. Have the programmers create a need assistance command like the whisper and ignore command. As a help to the mod staff have it time & date stamp complaints while notifying online mods that there is a situation in room. Granted these are easier typed than applied. I dont know enough programming code to know how easy or effective the last idea would be. The way I see it atleast it would be something. Some sort of action instead of the safe standard fence sitting action the chat members have been recieving.

instead of the safe standard fence sitting action the chat members have been recieving. i am sorry you feel that way... whenever possible i try to deal with the members brought to my attention. i try to do it reasonably and fairly. we do have a few folks who are insistant to find every nook and cranny to sneak back in. those suggestions you have are on the drawing board. we've been talking to the programming folks here about this for while. just as soon as they can free up some time from upgrades i know that they plan on helping out the chat situation. if a member is sending you offensive IMs or stalking your gallery you need to contact us... save the IMs in your archive and we will deal with the member immediately. if you are in the chatroom and a member is being a jerk... the very best thing you can do is have as many members of the chat room email the chatlogs to admin@renderosity.com and put that member on ignore. you don't have to listen to them. this will also discourage their outrageous behavior. if you think that the same member keeps coming back and back under various aliases, please tell us. so we can take measures to block their access. again, sorry you feel like no one is paying attention. we are... we just have to move slower than we'de like because of the resources we currently have available.
