heyas; anybody have any clue, done any research, heard any rumors, read any reports.... on the number of poser users out here? how about any numbers on the circulation of that 3d magazine with the free poser 3 on the cd? (what was the name of that one again?) i tried asking curious labs, but no reply yet. :/

3Dworld had poser on the front cover a while back and like most mags has circulation figures on the inside cover. Latest issue of 3d world has a circulation figure of 14,521, down 6,000ish from the issue which had poser on the cover. Computer Arts (greater circ than 3Dworld) had an issue also with poser on the front, unfortunately those mags are on the bookshelf and more than an armsreach away :) Other Mags I believe which gave away poser were PCformat and another games style mag, cant remember which :( Not sure if Digit has done a Poser issue as I dont get Digit on a regular basis. Doubt Curious will reply to your Q about user base, they wont be able to help really anyway, with all the free copies of P3 out there now the numder of users could be out by 10's of thousands.

MacUser or MacFormat, can't remember which but I think MacFormat, had Poser 3 on a dual-CD cover release not long ago, in the UK. There seem sto be quit a solid Mac graphics user base. I'd be interested to se ethe overall Mac-PC Poser dynamic, hobbyists inclusive.

Hmm, what's the membership of renderosity? Maybe you can base some of the numbers on that. And I'd venture to say that about a fourth or fifth of the Poser 3 in the magazine buyers actually use the program.

Interesting question. What is the membership of Renderosity?

Bloodsong, I'm sure that they do, but isn't that the sort of information you don't want your competitors to have? The developers of these graphics programs may all make assumptions about the market penetration of each other's products but they don't know or have proof of the exact numbers of eager consumers. They can probably purchase secondary information from trade magazines. (You know those subscription surveys where you tell them your job title, your operating system(s) and which programs you use, among other stuff? All that data is tabulated and sold.) However, this is incomplete data: since only the subscribers have filled out the survey, the only real intelligence would be gained from comparisons of the various segments of the user base. I'd be leery of extrapolating that to the market as a whole. It wouldn't include the students or hobbyists, or even all of the magazine's subscribers. Maya is trying to reposition itself from its expensive real estate on the top of the market to more of a mass-market product (according to their own press release). Lightwave and Cinema are also rapidly lowering prices. Probably the last thing CuriousLabs wants is for them to know the exact size of their user base. (Well, maybe not the last thing, but pretty close. ::chuckle::) Carolly
