Subject: Someone Please Help

digitek ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 9:29 PM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 7:14 AM

Heres my situation: About a year ago i borrowed poser and propack from a friend and installed it( i know this is wrong but i live on very limited income) and my friend has sense then moved away. A few days ago I was cleaning up my poser directory and accidently deleted a few files needed for poser to work they are: python14.dll asifont.map poser.dta mtswritter.dll If someone could send me the following files i would appreciate it my email is JCONE2@carolina.rr.com Or if someone knows where i could download the files that would be appreciated too.

Talk to Curious Labs. I have a strong feeling you won't get much sympathy here since the legitimacy of your copy of Poser is in serious question.

Valandar ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 9:47 PM

Actually, stating you "Borrowed it" from a friend, it is definitely not a legitamate copy. Sorry, bub, warez are not exactly cool around here.

Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!

digitek ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 10:01 PM

Sorry i didnt mean to offend anybody, just curious what do you mean by warez?

jaybutton ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 10:24 PM

Digitek, It sounds like you mean no harm by what you done, but in truth its piracy. I suggest that you buy the program if you want the missing files. Jay

PabloS ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 10:26 PM

warez is pirated software.

OK, giving you the benifit of the doubt and assuming you thought what you're doing was perfectly legit: "Warez" refers to copies of software obtained thru questionable or illegal means. Assuming your friend still has the CD then your copy qualifies as warez because he violated the Licensing Agreemant when he let you copy it onto your computer. he should have given you the CD with it, then you could have downloaded and faxed in a change of ownership form CL has, which would make you the legal owner. As it now stands, Curious labs will probably respond by telling you to delete your copy, and blacklisting the serial number, thus cutting your friend off from Tech support and upgrades. A legit copy is $219. A bit steep, I know, but well worth it. Also, if you plan to continue your quest for these missing files, don't bother looking in any of the other forums or the Poser newsgroup, because you'll get the same kind of response you got here.

zombiestudio ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 11:04 PM

Think of it this way: If i came to your house and stole $200, and then called you on the phone to ask you for a $20 bill that i dropped.......... Go ahead and send Curious Labs that e-mail. ;)

digitek ( ) posted Sun, 26 May 2002 at 11:12 PM

Lol thanks Zombie, and thank you everyone for your help, you guys kept me from getting into trouble with curious labs and I appreciate it. Guess im just going to suck it up and come up with the money to get a legit copy, cuz I cant live without poser :-)

You can buy a legal copy of Poser 4 over at 3dcommune for $179 (it's a special deal) and you'll get the manuals, content CD, and tech support... as well as the friendship and help of the Poser online communities. We number at least 85,000 people and have settled in a half-dozen Forums where we do our best to help, support, and inspire each other. However, we do not tolerate warez, even if inadvertant. I seem to remember a special combo offer at CuriousLabs for both Poser and the ProPack together. A short while ago, there was also something where if you had Poser3 (given away free on various magazines) you could upgrade to 4 for about a hundred dollars... and get a nice shiny legal serial number of your own. I believe that DAZ may have something where it you buy it through them, you can get vouchers good on their models. (It would be full price, but their models are good.) The developers at CuriousLabs really hate pirates, but they are not ogres (at least not after they've had their coffee), and the fault really lies in your friend for giving what he was not legally free to give, no matter how well intentioned. (And, after this embarrassment, I doubt if you are going to be sharing your copy around.) I would suggest emailing CuriousLabs and explaining the situation to them. They may ask you to delete your copy, or they may recommend another way to buy a full legal version other than what I've mentioned above... but that is their decision to make. Hanging you by your ankles in the 12th level dungeon (the one with the rats) isn't going to help anybody. However, we cannot help you until your ownership of the program is legal. Carolly

will im actualy glad some one here knows what actual piracy is seems to be a few that just like to assume there lawyers and quick to point finghers "Warez" refers to copies of software obtained thru questionable or illegal means violated the Licensing Agreemant when he let you copy it onto your computer will glad some one got it right lol but i do feel sorry for the guy. there is a clause in the letter of the law it is ify and would most likely cause seriose debates which i wont bother to mention due to a hostile ready to lynch blaze typ thing lol. but im actualy releaved i saw some one with with the true meaning of piracy. poser is a great software save up and buy it its definitly worth it.=)

Yeah ive already deleted my previous copy of Poser, and tonight i just placed and order through curious labs for the poser/propack bundle for $379. I dont belive i will email curious labs and tell them of my situation hauksdottir due to the fact that you guys make it sound as if they would lock me up and through away the key. Thnx again for your advice everyone.

No they wouldn't lock you up, they'd just tell you to do waht you've already done: get rid of the unauthorised copy. But now that you've oredered a legit copy, let me be the first to welcome you to the Poser community... As soon as it arrives, post something in the gallery here so we can see what you're made of :)

lol thnx martian manhunter first kind words spoken to me all night ;-), Im nott new to poser though ive been working with that copy for about a year, but i deleted all my projects with the illiget copy (didnt think to save them), but when i get back and running i will post something.

PabloS ( ) posted Mon, 27 May 2002 at 1:57 AM

At one time, curious labs had a program where you could get a legit registration regardless of how you came by your copy. I don't know if it still is in effect. I think a few folks upgraded their FREE Poser 3's to 4's that way. You could go to their website and hunt around, or email 'em and see if the program still exists.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 27 May 2002 at 7:09 AM

Digitek, Hey, my words were kind! I only mentioned the rats because that dungeon level is one of the nicer ones. If you've ever driven downwind of a winery in full fermentation, you know that rats don't smell badly at all. ;^) Let me then be the second to welcome you to the community. There are other programs out there which cost a lot more, but none of them have the enthusiastic support which Poser has. When your copy (UPS, about a week?) arrives, be sure to download the Service Pack #3, and then render up something to celebrate. And I think you deserve a {hug}, too. Carolly

Hi Digitek, I did not mean to sound unkind. I was trying to be helpful. I am glad to hear that you are buying Poser. I hope you enjoy it and I hope you enjoy the community here at Renderosity. :) Jay
