For the second time in a row...! humorix!! Winning by one vote, in fact! Great work humorix, and everyone else! You have all done remarkable work, this is reflected in most everyone having such a tough time on deciding the work they like best. These challenges are getting better and better every time. Congratulations humorix, you have the banner for your entry and the task of naming this coming month's theme. Have it posted within three days, or less as everyone can have a start on it by this coming weekend. :o) Thanks to EVERYONE for making these challenges as great as they are! AgentSmith

Congratulations - you might have won by one more vote if the angle had not been so extreme.

Thanx for all your comments folks. But there's a matter of clarification. Partially due to circumstances and the other part due to real bad connection I couldn't place my vote. I was torn between Alderons and Rochr's image and finally decided to vote for Rochr. However the connection didn't allow. That would make this a tie! I have already IM'd Agentsmith on this. I call upon Rochr to set the next challenge! This was a great challenge folks. I only feel sorry that I couldn't place my comments, but I might put my comments in separately in a new post. :-)

Congratulations again, and if you want to share the challenge with Roch, I think it would be a great idea. Rochr?

humorix ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 3:30 AM

Left to me A.S., I'd love to share this with many more! The submissions by Vasquez, Alderon, Alleycat (and others whom I'll comment on later) can in no way be termed lesser than the others. I'm feeling increasingly uncomfortable about there being a "winner" in a challenge. True winning is only in terms of how much one pushes oneself! How about we have a "Peers choice" which can be one or more piece, which we find, serves as showpiece of all that we have endeavoured to achieve? This is just a suggestion. But I was wondering what views my fellow challengers had on this?

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 4:28 AM

"serves as showpiece of all that we have endeavoured to achieve" The winner of the challenge usually encomapasses this, (for me anyway). I don't just vote on the one that looks the best. Knowing how Bryce works and what it takes to actually create a finished work, allows me (us) to understand what it must have taken to create whichever work we are looking at. BUT...these collective works really are getting better and better. Seriously, I'm not kissing your guy's butt's here, it's getting harder and harder to decide on JUST one so... First off - This next coming month, members will be able to go to the Bryce Backroom to view the entries, so they can vote on them. This will keep you guys from having to load up one GIANT post to see all the entries. May's total pic size came in at 1.42Mb. Now, you may still have to post and vote on the pics here in the forum, but I will, at the very least, put all the entries into the backroom for viewing. (Basically, click on the thumbnail to view the entry). But, even after each challenge is over, ALL the entries will stay up for viewing, permanently, each month being archived. Not just the challenge winners. Second - With this voting getting more difficult, there maybe should be a larger winner base. There is humorix's suggestion above (Peers Choice). While I will suggest having, in addition to the winner, an honorable mention. (or) a first, second, and third place winners. Opinions? AgentSmith

humorix ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 5:16 AM

Well A.S. how about following what the contest site you had previously mentioned does? That is each person votes a first vote (of 2 point) and a second vote (of one point) and then all is totalled to arrive upon a winner, second etc? Number of people in the last vote talked about being able to vote for more then one. Also I think the Backroom is a great idea. The reason I couldn't vote is the first 3 times I tried the page just didn't load up on my dial-up! :-(

Erlik ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 5:26 AM

If the last two challenges are any measure, there should be some way to decide on two or three pictures. I'd go with honorable mentions. But it wouldn't mean the end of the world for me if everybody else decides on the first three places. :-) Second, the problem with large threads in voting can be easily solved by having one thread (page) with pics and another with votes. That way you can save the page with pics on your disk and see them whenever you want. I admit to not checking the thread after casting my vote, because it was simply too big to download regularly. Third, there will be a problem with leaving entries in backroom. For instance, I'd like people to see my entry, and I'm going to put it in my gallery. It will duplicate the occupation of space on Renderosity's disks, for one. And then, if somebody wants to link to the pic, or if I want to enter it somewhere else and link to it, people will get backroom starting page, because of the frames. Frames are evil. Sorry for carping on this again, but I believe that everybody should make navigation as easy as possible.

You mean 3DLuvr? In that one, a person votes for winner, runner-up and honorable mention. Far as I remember (couple months ago) it wasn't point based, but I didn't vote in the last one. No offense, I'm just not a fan of points in voting, it complicates things too much in my opinion. But then again I really hate anything thats not a straight vote (like the voting system we have in America for President) I like one person, one vote. BUT...we'll have to make a post that contains the different kinds of voting systems, then....have everyone vote on it, lol. Right now, I'm waiting Roch to answer that I.M. of mine....;o)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 5:46 AM

Links to pics in the backroom can't be allowed for the reasons you gave. If you need/want to link your pics on Renderosity, it will have to be through your gallery, your artist page, or on your own webpage. I'm definately not a fan of frames either, especially now, since I am re-working the backroom on my own, here at home, lol. But frames will be needed just because of the large volumes of stuff the backroom WILL have. The large threads in voting aren't made "large" by text, it's made large by the fact that there are 1.42Mb worth of pics in it. Seperate posts can't solve the problem of someone having to load a giant single post to see all the entries, for the first time. That's what's going to be solved; frustrating load times for slower modems.

humorix - I see what you mean by the points, now at 3DLuvr. But in the actual voting (for the voter), it's still like voting for first, second, and third. Like I said, we'll let the masses decide, lol.

Erlik ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 6:36 AM

Is there anything I could do to help you about the pages? I'm certain that frames are a solution for a wrong problem. :-) About the voting thread, I'm not objecting to downloading the entries once (although I have 56k modem), but to downloading them every time I want to check how the voting goes.

johnpenn ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 7:38 AM

Congrats to the winner(s). I'm confused. I know it's nice to vote for more than one, but can't we just say that the one with the second most votes is runner-up? It's a keep it simple kind of thing. Agent Smith, I know a little about web design, and I believe that there's an easy (and automatic) way to put the URL in the body of the page itself. So, at the top of the page it would say the URL for those who wish to link. Send me an email if you need a hand with the web work. Alternately, why not put thumbs in the backroom which link to the artist's actual gallery page with the piece? It solves the whole problem. When the artist submits for a challenge, they upload to their gallery, and then submit the URL for the contest. To make it one better, the artist will submit not only the URL, but also the thumbnail.

Aldaron ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 12:30 PM

That's actually a very good idea about the thumbnails johnpenn. I like it. I also like the mentioning of second and third place based on votes received.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 28 May 2002 at 5:16 PM

Oh, I'm not truly having a problem with frames, there just a little more "pain in the neck", but manageable. And, I don't really want to change the frames part of it, since the backroom was already set up before I became a mod. I'm using Frontpage 2000 for the site work, and it can be made that each page has a seperate url for linking. Which I like just for my own anal retentive sakes, lol. That way if there is say, a specific tutorial for something, we can give out just that specific page url. Straighter route to what is needed. Linking backroom entry thumbnails to pics that exsist in the members gallery has the problem - if the member changes their gallery, the picture, or gets booted from renderosity, etc. then thumbnail would lead nowhere. It's also one more set of (giant) links I would have to keep my eye on, making sure none of them go dead. Renderosity has NO problem with disk space, trust me on this one. And, since the pics would be in the backroom and not in the general mix of gallery pics, members would have a better chance at speedier load times for the pic itself. As far as the viewing the voting thread goes...here's what I always do; now, I do use Internet Explorer, I don't know about Netscape or other browsers...I bring up the page, making sure everything is there and loaded. I then just go to "File>SaveAs..." and under "Save as type" I choose "Web Archive, single file(*mht)". This will save the entire page (one page only) as a single file, I can then look at anytime, and you don't have to be connected to the internet to look at it.
