Subject: Not able to texture a 3ds file

Hi All, I need a rack unit radio for one of my scenes, so a made one in MAX4 (just a box with a couple knobs). I exported a 3ds and brought it into Poser. I imports fine and looks great but I can't texture it. Under doc display my setting is for texture shaded. And it doesn't render with a texture either. This is the first time I've tried this so I'm not sure if I exported from Max correctly. I did search through Renderosity's Tuts, and I'm still gonna search. Any help would be great!

I am in no way a "guru" at this, but i have downloaded quite a few 3ds files that wouldn't take a texture. What i did was import it into poser, export as an object run it through uvmapper, make your texture, bring it back into poser, add your texture, then export again as a 3ds file, hope that helps, but maybe a more advanced person might pop in here and help you out

Thanks dirk for the tip! Instead of texturing in MAX I figured I'd do it in Poser, since I have to make the texture anyway. I'm try the uvmapdemo now. Let ya know.

  1. From Poser & export your radio as a wavefront object. 2) Open UVMapper Classic (free version) and "Load Model" 3) Save model as an object (I use the original name). 4) Save the texture map from here... you can change the texture map to suit your purposes. I suggest "box" for this type of model. 4) Open the texture map in a paint program like Photoshop and apply appropriate graphics. 5) Open Poser & File>Import>Import Wavefront Obj 6) Assign the newly created texture to your model. You're done! This is just one way to do this. I'm sure there are others, but I love UVMapper Classic and export 3DS files to it all the time to create objects that can be textured the way I need. Got it! Now I just have to make the texture. I was doing a test with a grid texture. Many thanks to Dirk and Tigercub!

You might want to get the obj import/export plugin for max 4 by habware. It will save all the importing then exporting from Poser. It's freeware and you'll also need it if you are making morphs for poser figures. Here's the link...

it sounds like you did not apply mapping before exporting from Max. Poser cannot assign UVW mapping itself, so you need to do that in max or UVMapper or some other app.
