Subject: An Insider Question On Lenses

Once again Mikey is gonna show some ignorance. If you're strapped for cash and taking a lens to a dealer / store is out of the question, how hard is it to dismantle a lens and clean it? My second hand ones that came with the camera seem to have dust inside...... Cheers! Mike btw, typing that title reminded me of a joke - if you're easily offended, don't read any further. I've warned ya. Two little boys were out in the woods playing one day when one of them gets a thorn in his finger. Screaming with pain, he asks his friend what he should do to stop it hurting. His friend says "Well, there's a Bar just down there, we can go in and ask the man for a glass of Woodpecker to put your finger in, that should stop it." "How will that help?" Says the other "Well, my sister was talking to her friend Tracy and she said that whenever she gets a prick in her hand she has to put it in cider.........." Tee hee. (",) (btw, just in case you Yanks need it explained, Woodpecker is a brand of cider. Cider is an alcholic drink made of apples and looking much like dark lager. Now read it again and you'll get it. Snigger)

Well, if you don't have the experience and/or tools to take it apart, don't do it. Lens segment placement is very, very critical and one piece of glass that's not 100% in place can make your whole lens completely wortless/useless :) Or if it's a cheap lens that you can risk loosing, I guess trying carefully won't hurt....

Dont do it Mike, I did it once and it was a bloody disaster, bits all over the place had to throw it in the bin. Can you see any degradation to your prints because of it? I had a fly in my lens and it effected the quality of my prints but I often shoot with dirty lenses without any noticeable effect. and the joke LMAO, bet I can't remember it next time i'm in the pub:O)

Shouting through a police megaphone: "Don't do it Mike! Put the lens down and come out peacefully. Think of all your future pictures! Put the lens down, Mike. Put it down"!

Oh. Unanimous then, huh? okay.... I guess if it's got inside then there must be a gap somewhere.... I'll give it a good going around with that comressed air and hopefully it'll find the gap and get enough movement inside to blow it across to somewhere where it ain't so important... (It's a tiny hair and appears on the edge of each picture taken with that lens. Easily editable, but damned annoying.) (",)
