Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
I'm getting ready to do something in a few minutes, so I need to be brief. There is no way to allocate memory for Poser with a PC. There are at least two threads on this subject going on right now. Spend a little time reading. Usually you get that error if there is a problem with an object file. Either the obj file is bad, or it is not installed in the right place, etc.
Memory allocation for applications on the PC is handled automatically by the operating system. If you decoded the BFLion.pcf file then you should have a BFLion.rsr file in your Poser 4RuntimeGeometriesZygoteAnimalslion folder. try deleting this .rsr file. Sometimes, the rsr files become damaged and can cause the errot you describe. When Poser next tries to read the lion file, the rsr will be recreated. 'Out of memory' is also Poser's generic error message and can appear for a number of reasons. The damaged rsr file is perhaps one of the most frequent reasons it appears, but not the only one.

Sometimes it's good to provide a brief explanation, then tell someone where they can get more info. I did just that. I'm also a person who answers a "boatload" of questions, and produces MANY fine tutorials. So excuse me if I reject your "rude accusation." Check out the link for my tutorials. ![Message671414.jpg](http://www.renderosity.com/photos/Message671414.jpg)Is this what they call election fraud? You can set the virtual memory (is the same thing on your pc) in your system properties. I found this out on my machine. I had 2 gig of v-memory and got that error message when rendering. A problem with poser I have found is the more virtual memory you have set on your system the more problems you have with poser. I read forum and found the answer. Than I set a lower setting in my computer you can do this by going to your control panal, Performance and Maintenance and then click on system. go to: system properties/advanced/performance settings. There you can set your virtual memory...
When I first started fumbling with Poser, I asked a multitude of questions, and got some great answers from many people. Then I started helping others in the forums, and with tutorials that many others have found useful. I used to think that was a good thing. Indeed, it should be a good thing. But you know, comments like this piss me off: "our self-elected guru read the manual." Do you want a place where people can go to get and give help?! Or do you just want to drive people away with your sarcasm?! You know I can find many other uses for my time and energy. Maybe if you don't like my efforts to help others, you can just stay out of the way and keep your sarcasm to yourself. Why does it bother you so much that I help others? Do you really think I'm spending all these hours doing this work just to cause trouble? Crap I'm too lazy to go to all that effort. I can just sit here, scratch my crotch, belch and come up with sarcastic comments. You know it feels good to vent once and awhile. Now maybe I'll just go to bed early, rather than work on another tutorial. Or better yet, maybe I'll make another Naked Vicky in the Temple render.
IIRC, memory allocation on the Mac is referring to the actual amount of physical memory allocated to an application. The virtual memory setting in Windows is for sizing the Paging file, disk space that is substituted for physical RAM if it runs low. In the new Mac OS X, the OS allocates memory dynamically the same way Windows does. Different versions of Windows differ in how well they handle memory allocation. Windows 9X doesn't do as good a job and a utility like ramboost can help. Windows 2000 and XP generally do a very good job of memory allocation and you would probably get less benefit from such utilities.

I didn't state my suggustion right. Theres two programs for this memory thing. Ramboster, which I had and didn't like it. so thats gone. The one I have now is recommend by Betsy the tech lady at Daz. It's called Cacheman. So far so good with it. I'm running windows98 2nd edition. with 512MG of ram. I can't give a final say in this only using it one day. but I had no Poser freeze when I rendered today. :O) Ron, don't get so upset, you've helped me and a lot of people. Maybe you need a little break. You have a lot of emotional things going on in your life. I'm thinking good thoughts for you.

I have done absolutely *nothing* to place any cookies on the web site. I made a very friendly, generic web site. You just go there and see what you want. Usually any firewall program will explain exactly what "security risk" you encounter, if you click on a link like "more info." I dumped ZoneAlarm a year or so ago because it literally "didn't know friend from Foe." I got tired of getting hundreds of security alarms just because ZoneAlarm thought my ISP was invading my computer every time it tried to send me mail. I had Outlook Express set to check my email every 10 minutes. I use a cable modem, which has an "always on" connection. **** I'm using a second browser window to visit my web site now, and I have received NO security or privacy alerts. In contrast, I get them all the time when I visit Free Stuff here at Renderosity. I have Norton Internet Security, because I believe that program has a more realistic interpretation of exactly what constitutes and "invasion." It just plain works better too. *** I have an idea you don't know exactly what cookies do anyway. Cookies have a bad name these days because some of them are misused by web sites. One use of a cookie is a "place holder." You cannot maintain a permanent connection to a web site because it is just not practical. The cookies will keep your place marked. When you want to see more, then your browser goes back out to the web site, and fetches the next page, etc. Renderosity uses cookies to keep your user info so you can access the services. Etc, etc. **** Again, I have no code in my web site that gives cookies. I do nothing to invade your privacy. I don't ask you to sign up before you can view my site. The same goes for my Freebie and Tutorial Site.killdozer it's also quite possible that the web counter ron is using or the banner for wisesource you can see in your pic is the one doing the cookie dance with zonealarm, I've visited Ron's site a few times and never found a cookie that mentions his site in my cache, it's definitely not a deliberate action on Ron's part, they put these things in without telling anyone even the people who use them. Rob
Thanks for the comments, c1ircle. I posted the banner for my web host because he quite frankly "gave me a good deal" on hosting. I certainly can return the favor. To my knowledge, the web site host doesn't support anything that would invade your computer. Again, ZoneAlarm is known to give numerous false alarms. That is one huge reason I exterminated it.
It's not the web host or the banner, Ron, I just went to your site and got the same message. It is the counter that you use. They are forcing cookies through the counter to visitors web sites. They are using you as a host for the web site tracking. Even more heinous, they make you pay so much a year to them to use you as a host for their tracking. I would dump them asap. Try www.bravenet.com for free counters and a ton of other webmaster goodies.
Oh yeah almost forgot, some cookies are innocent and just hold your place or retain your log in info so you dont have to relog every time to visit. The second one can be not so innocent if the cookie uses your IP address as am identifier and you log in from an open computer lab at the local college or library. Some cookies are not so innocent. Some record every single web page that you visit and report the information back to a processing agency under the guise of demographical research. Among the things that these little e-beasties can report are the contents of your HDD, including "naughties", (warez and porn), and can even transfer the encrypted files that retain your credit card and banking info, website passwords, etal. If anyone is unfortunate enough to use Gator, that info has ben passed many times over. These transfers go by so quickly that it may only register as a little flicker on the activity light to those of us with cable modems. Anyway, I've got to go save the collegiate world from pebcaks and ID-Ten-Tees. Everyone have a great day. :)
I use a free counter, and it's helped inform me whether or not my site gets visited at all. I used to think I was doing all this for nothing. Now I get weekly reports. The last one said over 500 people visited my site. That makes it feel worthwhile to me. To my knowledge, counter.com doesn't engage in spying on your computer. I think it's easy to get paranoid when other sites, hosts, etc. engage in "shady practices." People start jumping whenever a cookie comes up. According to Curious Labs, Poser doesn't really connect over the Internet. Poser checks to see if you have other copies of Poser running on your network, using the same serial number. Because of that little fluke, your firewall can think Poser is "phoning home." That also means my wife's computer needs to be on even when she's out of town. If her computer isn't running, I can't use Poser, PhotoShop and Ulead PhotoImpact. That's pretty weird to me.
americanChi, I am not sure if I felt insulted. Hey, sometimes we read things differntly when a potential problem is brought out publicly, rather than privately. I was already taking some heat here earlier I believe. To tell you the truth, I'm wasted emotionally right now. I just had to put one of our dogs to sleep. It's not an easy thing for me. I'm getting out of here.

IN the Poser instruction book, there is a section for expanding the memory allocation in the Mac version--but is there any way to expand it for the PC version? Is this even needed? When I tried a download of the Big Face Lion an 'out of memory' warning flashed up and it was not talking about hard drive.
