Subject: Well basically I need to know 2 things.......

One thing is........ How do I make a cave with the same shape as the one above using the Terrain Editor? I'm guessing that for the sites I can create stones and enlarge rotate them? And the second thing I need to know is..... How do I make the ground like that? The thing is I need to create the ground with mostly grass on it but I need to create paths on it like the one that leads to the cave :) So could you guys explain to me? Thanks! :D

i'll get back to you with the first point. The second point the best way i have found is to create a transparency map (with grass) and add it to a duplicate of the terrain below. This enables you to move the grass about more easily

Like airflamesred said. But, here's an easy alternative to a transparency map. Make a terrain with a drt material. Dupe that terrain, and change it's material to grass. Paint a path over it and voila. I think you'd get better results if you used a transmap on the grass as well, but that's up to you. If you're really hard core, you can make an altitude sensitive material that shows dirt in the low areas and grass in the high areas, but that's a real pain in the neck. You'll need to do the cave with several terrains as well. Remember though: you can always boolean away the mouth of the cave!

Jessica: There's that quest for glory guy again. according to what I've read most of sierra's stuff was hand drawn or sometimes based on photographs or movie clips. 1) you can't. you will have to make a boolean subtraction . use a rock or series of rocks for your negative boolean. if you want stalagmites/stalactites , they will probably need to be seperate objects. 2) looks like johnpenn has a handle on that. For some strange reason my first try to reply didn't show hmm..... Cool! I definitely got the Path part :) First I made a ground plane with dirt material and made a terrain with grass material and stretched it around. Then I edited the terrain like Johnpenn said and it worked! hehe But how do I give my terrain the exact shape I want to form the cave, like Airflamesred did with those 5 terrains? That's my biggest problem right now :(

simple as simon - go to terrain and choose new for the blank canvas - even though you are looking from above imagine you are looking at the cave entrance.Leave the current settings aand just with just quick single clicks to the rough shape not forgetting to leave a hole for the entrance change the flow, add noise to taste.Exit and rotate appropriately.other similar terains can created in the same way.Boolean a couple of cubes and butt them up to the inside of the opening. And finally let us see the results

Another way to make the cave entrance is with a lattice. Paint it as if you are looking straight at the mouth of the cave in the editor. Rotate up and resize. The path can be made like everyone said, but in this scene I duplicated the grass terrain, inverted the heightmap and flattened it out a little. Give it a different texture, add some mountains in the back and you are there.

Well I did reach in some kind of shape... (lol) I was never that good with my hands anyway ;) I'll have to search for a meterial that matches the one in the first pic cause I can't find one like it in Bryce :( And somehow make sure that the hole doesn't get affected by the cave's material and stay black...(how do I do that? :D) But what I would really like to know right now is, how do I prevent my cave from been sooo..... FLAT? To make it more 3d like? :)

Jessica: __shapes: Tell me - Do you know how to use the elevation tool tn the terrain editor? If not, you need to learn to use it to make custom terrains. you need to play around with it to get some experience for a day or so. or... you could make a custom 8-bit grayscale image in you favorite paint program. (Should be square). - the problem is that you can't actually see the difference between the shades of gray.) either way you'll be making custom terrains in no time. __perspective: try using the "ground level" camera to get a perspective and zoom in from there (slowly.) patrick: Interesting idea. Jessica sorry I didn't see your last post until I posted. note that the only problem with Patrick's idea is that you are limited to the depth of the "lattice". If you are going to use his method you may be able to use multible copies of the lattice to make the cave deeper. I still think that the boolean method is simpler for a feeling of depth.

Hey thanks for the tutorial! :) It helped me figure out the flat part :D Now I have another problem.....(big suprise huh? ;)) When I make the cave shape (it's not complete yet) it shows like in pic above which is fine... But when I try to group the terrains and rotate........

This happens :( So how do I stop this? Cause it sucks big time :( Oh yeah do I have to add any kind of noise for the cave shape to work better? I haven't done that yet

Jessica: Wow you're close now. ungroup everything and re-place your objects. (this IS the hard part). You'll need to look at it from front, side and top views and adjust until it looks right in each view. NOTE: It helps to set your camera in a cardinal view (ie South and 0 degrees). In the top view the objects should be placed in the scene normal to the camera (90 degrees). Think of it like a "T" where the downleg of the T is the camera view center and the cross of the T is the view of your object. when everything is fine you can adjust the grouped object and readjust the viewe. You can also boolean a cave out of a terrain with a second negative terrain that is rotated so it is lying down.

If you are talking about getting rid of the flat space at the entrance to your cave (the area filling up the opening) use the clipping tool in the terrain editor (it should look like a bracket right next to the grey scale map) and raise it from the bottom until that part disappears.

Ok I got that part too :D First I positioned the camera like bikermouse said (with 0 rotation too) and then used the cliping tool in the Terrain Editor to get rid of the flat area. Finally I rotated each terrain separetely by -90 degrees and used the Front, Top, Right and Director Cameras to position them! So now I can continue the work on the entrance and the back of the cave :D Thanks you guys :) I'll be back with more trouble soon ;)
