Here are a few observations from an independent voter (who despises both Bush & Ashcroft). The real problem is: 1) A minority of people vote. 2) A lot of intelligent, educated people - especially young people - find politics either distasteful or irrelevant. When there's a small turnout extreme groups on the right or left tend to dominate - these days, it's the extreme right. Fact: about 50% (maybe less) of registered voters actually voted. Of those, about 5% voted for a 3rd party candidate (I doubt many thought that Nader or Buchanan actually had a chance to win. I REALLY doubt that many agreed with either one or thought that either could really govern if elected; they just wanted to send a message.) What Bush should be reminded of: He still lost the popular vote! He won in the electoral college because he carried Florida by an incredibly small margin - a small fraction of 1%. Some of us had vain hopes he might remember that and try to seek bipartisan answers and govern from the center. Yeah, I know; fat chance! The upshot of this is simply: Whatever your feelings about politics as it's practiced today, or about the two major parties - you've got to eventually hold your nose and vote. Personally, my criteria is: Which of these clowns will do the least damage to the Constitution in 4 years? I think you can guess I didn't vote Bush/Chaney!

ah, I think we were refered to as lefties. : ) Funny how any stupid thing that party does is later refered to as a myth. Actually I am not currently enrolled in a party but do vote. I may have to enroll now as it occurs to me that the primaries have become more important. Waiting for others to choose the canditates I ultimately vote for isn't cutting it any more.

I am not worried about the negative comments actually. it is their right. I was more concerned someone might believe the "myth" myth. My larger concern is over puritanical vs christianity and their involvement in the government. How these two got mixed up I don't understand. Puritans came to this country and freely practiced their beliefs as they still do thanks to that document that safeguards freedoms for all. Our Founding fathers also intended for a separation of church and state so that freedoms could be had by all. The document is imperfect, but it's intent is clear and it alows for revision for events they hadn't thought of, but as a vehicle to add freedoms, not to take away. In my brief research for the flag I discovered something I hadn't known before. In the Pledge "under God" was only added after the final 2 states joined the union back in 1959. Try saying the pledge with out those works. It is so automatic, I stumble trying to leave them out. It is the little things that start to add up. I am concerned for the hypocracy in understanding the messages of the founding fathers when they penned the Declaration and Constitution. Will the day come when future generations are forced to flee this country in search of the very freedoms granted them by these documents? By the way, I am a christian and do hope God is on my side but that requires my being on his side too.

Good luck with the comments though. I took comments off of my Lady Liberty. Instead of comments on the render, and all I did to get Lady Liberty to scowl and shake her fist, all I got was political crap. I was in no mood to deal with it.

That is probably the greatest thing about being an American: we can say "the king is a fink!" and not get hung up by our toes against some mold-ridden wall. The government has actually changed a lot in 200 years. It used to be that you only had political power if you were a white male landowner. Change is slow. It is like the deep currents of the ocean. But water eventually gets its way. I haven't missed an election since 1968... when I leafleted for the recall of Governor Reagan. (I've never liked hypocrites.) People who don't vote don't have the right to complain... that they have any other rights is only due to the people who care enough to mark a ballot. After this last fiasco, I expect a lot more people will care what happens to them. Carolly

hauksdottir: I never understood the deal with Reagan. We are all the worse for his "Reign" as President, and California hasn't been the same since he was govenor. We now are faced with the aspect of martial law . . . due to circumstances resembling those of the burning of the Reichtag Building in 1938.(The Nazi's burnt down their own building and blamed it on the communists.) It does not matter who crashed those planes into those buildings - what matters is that mr. bush is pressing his advantage in the same way mr. hitler did - and I suspect to the same ends. For this reason It is good to see that at least someone hasn't forgotten the meaning of the word Liberty. - The only answer to government is anarchy. The only answer to anarchy is government.
