The edging needs work. It looks just like SCA armor. I prefer the figure on the left overall. Chainmail ought to have something underneath as protection. The figure on the right looks like it is wearing decoration, not functional armor. Nice glove texture. Is the vest supposed to be leather or suede? (It looks like suede.) Can you tighten the skirt around the waist? It bulges out oddly.
I think it's stunning work so far. I like the non-trans version better. The transparancy might come in handy if you put another layer of clothing beneath it. It may not be "acurate" chain mail armor, but it still works for a fantasy image, for me anyway. Once again, what you have already might make a good base for adding more realistic elements. Keep it up! :)
I tend to agree with everybody else. While you did a great job on the transparency map, the one on the left is best. I know from experience, bare chainmail against the skin is murder on body hair. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!! It's worse than a full body waxing!!! Except it rips the hair out by the roots individually. It's ALWAYS better to wear something under chainmail. It also helps stop sunburn in odd patterns, (and places). LOL Although, you might concider adding a bump map to the mail. It'll add more diversity and realism under dramatic lighting.
I think the trans was a neat idea, but like eveyone has said, not to functional. I well include it in the download when finished. I am going to do more with the trim: I'll keep the "V" pattern, but add rivets and the suede texture (that actually looks much better than what is depicted). The chainmail was built and rendered in Bryce with just a bunch of offset toruses, but for some reason, it ended up looking like a chainlink fence! Back to work...
I agree with the bump Map idea. That would give it the necessary feel of chain. And I agree with Hob. Wearing chain on bare skin....BAD. I don't think she has to worry about the body hair issue as much as Hob and I but if she is struck, too much of the impact would be transfered to her body. Under cushioning with Chain was always how it was treaditionally worn. Chain to stop the blade, padded cloth or leather to cushion the blow underneath. Oh, and DAMN good job. smile
The undergarment also prevented the individual links of mail from being imbedded in the flesh after struck with a sword at least somewhat ... I like the left for practicality and as far as trying to make it looka a little more like chainmail it is because the links dont intersect. They all butt together like a four leaf clover rather than go through the holes like a flattened chain ... It is a tough thing to do ... Good work though
