Subject: Memory Problems!!!!

Philywebrider ( ) posted Wed, 03 July 2002 at 7:10 PM · edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 11:15 PM

I have a full 1Gig of memory, 2gigHZ, 110gig hard drive, on my windows XP system, yet I loaded one figure, one prop, and Poser told me I was out of memory, save my file, then it knocked me out of Poser. Any idea what happened? I'd like to increase the amount of memory allocted to Poser, but I'm a bit of a newbie, and I have no Idea how to do it. can anybody help? :(

let me guess, it was a 3ds file...or maybe dxf. some files just mysteriously crash poser. it really has nothing to do with memory, just incompatibility

Sorry Red Baron but it was a standard Poser file.

Guys, this is in the Poser FAQ at the top of the page. Let's assume you already made sure Poser was updated to 4.03. You got that message after Poser couldn't load an object file. Then Poser gave you the out of memory error. The solution is simple. Just find out where the obj file is. Sometimes you get that error because the object file didn't get installed in the right place. Sometimes you get it because you tried to use something that required a previous product. Some Michael and Vicky clothes require that you have the original Clothing Packs for instance. So why not start by reading the docs that go with the figure you were loading, then read the Poser FAQ, do some research. Then see if the problem is fixed. If not, make a list of the exact circumstances and come back to us. *** "This message states My Not So Humble Opinion. Our opinions might differ, but I respect your opinion!"

good point...missing obj files are a bitch. :)

Best I can determine what happened was the following. 1) I had applied basic clothing 2) I tried to apply a map texture 3) Poser kept asking for bum files, but wouldn't accept the files I highlighted. 4) I tried applying texture / bum through Materials. 5) Poser locked up. 6) I closed Poser, ctl-alt-del. 7) When I opened Poser again I tried to apply the basic clothing again, this time I got the "memory problem". 8) I found the object file and deleted the RSR, and that fixed "memory problem". 9) when I tried applying the mat files I got a repeat of the obove sequence, including corrupting the RSR's in the basic clothing. 10) I fixed the RSR's again, but I'm not quite sure what to do now.

PS I have the latest patch and Poser4 no Propack.

ronknights ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 8:01 AM

Let me assure you this has happened to me many times before I learned the proper solution. So don't feel bad. OK, you're getting this problem because of a problem with the bum files. I'm thinking maybe the bum files are listed as jpg rather than bum files right now. The bum files need to be converted. The easiest way to do this is: 1.) Run Poser 2.) Load any prop (do not load the item that causes the problem). 3.) You probably have a file that has a name like paperbum.jpg. You need to load that bum file. 4.) Poser will ask if you want to convert this to bum. Say yes. You might want to do this to any other similar files.. anything with the word bum as part of the name, but jpg as the file extension. 5.) Get rid of that prop... hit new, etc... 6.) Now load the new item. You may still need to get rid of the geometry rsr. 7.) All should be well after this. What happens: 1.) Poser doesn't want to load the item because your bum file is missing. 2.) You hit ctrl alt del, and in essence you screw up the geometry file. 3.) You go back in and load the file. The object file has been corrupted. It won't load. 4.) You get the out of memory error. 5.) You repeat the cycle. *** "This message states My Not So Humble Opinion. ronknights As you can see, no jpeg ext., but your proably right, they are jpeg. Should I still try you method? Thanks Bewildered :(

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 9:19 AM

Maybe Poser doesn't recognize the jpeg, so it doesn't know to convert it to Bum.

ronknights ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 9:20 AM

OOOOH, I don't see a "dot" in the file name? Or is it my feeble eyes? None of your files show a "dot" in the filenames. the filename should be halterelegant(dot)bum. OH, do you have a Mac? Maybe it's different? Those are the best guesses I can give.. I'm getting ready for work... On the 4th of July no less.

OK, this is a hurried response. Check out the screenshot. You need to enable viewing of file extensions to known file types. Do it from the Control Panel, and Folders. Then everything I said makes sense.

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 9:24 AM

No Mac, Windows XP on PC, your right, no dot. Sorry about work. Happy Foutth! Still bewildered

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 9:29 AM

ronknights done, file extendion now show. Going to give a try many thenks

ronknights ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 10:00 AM

Windows hides file extensions of known files. They have for decades. It is the stupidest feature of Windows. It causes you too many problems. You'll be just fine now.

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 10:00 AM

ronknights Everything is working, once I had the file extendions, Poser recognized the files as a jpeg and converted them to bum. Again, Many thanks

ronknights ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 7:22 PM

I'm so glad you finally got it all working. You had obviously gone through such a hard time! Do me a favor and call me Ron (My real name is Ron Knights).

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 04 July 2002 at 7:53 PM

Hi Ron Thanks again. Steve

This is just Microsoft's way of "protecting" us from things we shouldn't need to know, incidently. I think it is another one of those Mac-envy things, Macs really don't care about extensions (they just know), so Microsoft said "Oh, we can do that too... Repete after me- "Curse you, Bill Gates!"

You guys wouldn't believe how much extra work I made for myself a few years ago. I named all my files imagejpg, imagecpt, etc... I was too stupid to go into folder options and change the setting to show the file extensions! I finally caught on!

Philywebrider ( ) posted Fri, 05 July 2002 at 6:02 AM

Well Ron don't feel too stupid, you figured it out, I had to have somebody tell me. ;oP
