Subject: Creases in model

I am having problems with the crease feature. How does one create a crease next to a smooth flowing part of the model? I've read the manual but without a practical example, it's kinda difficult. Thanks, Chris

Here is a pic of my model and and imported (tooth) model I am trying to duplicate. I wouldn't be bothering to reconstruct the tooth model but I can't do a booleen on it so I have to make my own in C2. I am having trouble creating those definitive creases or grooves. The next pic is of how I'm constructing it in the Vertex modeller. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

No answers here, but a question- My models never look like that in the VM- I always see filled (or empty) polys that lay right along the vertices/edges. How did you get the control cage effect? Or is this CS2 with subdivision modelling? Thanks Markd

Chris, From what I can tell, CS2 doesn't allow for creasing in the subdiv smoothing function (ss). Turn it off. Work with the model in straight vertex mode and do a few subdivides in a couple of strategic places then start to apply creases. The actuallity of it is that ss doesn't seem to allow for any creasing, hence smoothing. But it may take a bit of work. Incidentally, try changing the model you imported into a vertex mesh (edit-->convert to other modeller). In the long run, this is much easier. ken dork.gif

No matter how ou get this model to work for you, I would highly suggest NOT doing a boolean operqation on it. I have never found them to work correctly, and I've read this from others here in the forum as well. Good luck.

Carrara stores qualities (or lack thereof) for each edge in a model. Unless you create small features via small (short) edges, you won't be able to have sharp edges specified in small areas. One caveat... you can simulate sharpness with extremely small smooth edges at the expense of rendering time. Sharpness or smoothness is an artifact of the rendering process. Your model is simply a guide for the rendering engine: the model "specifies" sharpness or smoothness in the tonal averaging portion of the rendering pipeline. Boolean works well with completely enclosed spaces. Your models to be operated on should not have any holes. UV mapping will be destroyed, however. Suggest procedural shaders for any boolean objects. Thanks again for the guidance and help. I was able to convert the model and then do a boolean operation on it. Making sure it was completely enclosed seemed to do the trick. Thanks again to everyone, Chris
