THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce/Poser export

I am working on a picture of the cricifixion of Christ right now. It will be a poser/bryce combo. I either need to import my posed figure into Byce as a waverfront object for a final rendering, or import a cross figure from Bryce into Poser for the render. These are the problems i am having, any suggestions will be appreciated: I can't seem to be able to export an object from Bryce. The "file>export file" command only works with the terrain and symmetrical lattice objects. Is there a way to convert ojects into a lattice form, or is this a quirk in the program? When I try to import my poser figure into Bryce, the wavefront file always seems to be corrupt when i use the "Anton's Poseable Wizard Hair" which I downloaded from renderoisty. If I remove the hair, the figure exports fine. What gives here? Is there a parameter I can change on the poseable hair to make it export into bryce? Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure if this'll help, but can you export the hair separately and re-composite it in Bryce? Because there is no way to export Bryce primitives into Poser -- like you said, only lattices.

If your Bryce object is NOT made of Bryce primitives, then export using Ctrl-D (or MAC equivalent) after clicking on the "E" box. You can export stones as well as other things imported into Bryce this way.

You could try this: In poser create a box that fully covers your figure (including the hair). Export it as an OBJ and import it into Bryce. Then Delete the Box. This usually works for me when I'm having trouble importing poser figures with objects attached to the it (like hair clothes etc..)into bryce. If that doesn't work you could try to save the hair seperatly as an obj/3ds/dxf-file and import it into Bryce. good luck

Okay...i think it is easier to import from poser. doing the hair seperately sounds like a good idea. why not try importing the character then....importing the .obj file directly from your poser geometries folder. sounds like it is getting somehow corrupted. if this fails....well, email anton...he is a decent merchant, and will most likely be able to figure it out. (i am thinking it has something to do with his system of "handles", but since i don't have this hair can't figure more out...he used "phantom" parts on that mesh, i know...this may be the problem.)

Ok, here's the key that might work for you. Do your final render in Bryce cuz you're right, Bryce doesn't export very well. (and the lighting and render options in Bryce are to me WAY better than Poser). As for getting your Poser into Bryce... Export in .obj format. Go to http://www.xdsoft.com/explorer/ and get 3d exploration. I don't know if the demo will work for you or if you have to buy it. The demo works but the license agreement is probably for non commercial. I'll let you investigate that. Anyway, open your .obj file in 3d exploration and resave over itself. Then go to the free stuff section here and find a proggy called Grouper. Run your obj file through that. It resaves as the same file name but with a g on the end. IE, cross.obj is resaved as crossg.obj. Import the "g" file to Bryce. (The reason you want grouper is so that you can select the transmap meshes without wading through a hundred meshes that are numbered and not named with something recognizable.) Then you need to do a trick in the materials lab with the transmap. There's a couple of tuts on it. This one might work for you... http://www.curiography.com/ That should do it. If you have any problems let me know.

PS, the corrupt i/o error is likely a result of some changes in the .obj text that some of the newer modelers are using. I just ran into this as well and the 3d exploration fixed it.

Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a go.

I had trouble exporting from poser when I unchecked the land the file failed to go. I turned on the land and ungrouped in bryce and deleted it there. Sometimes I could uncheck and check objects and then it would go. Since I ran the 4.03 upgrade from Curious Labs this has gone away. What version are you using? If it stll says meta creations get the upgrade. Its free.

As far as I know, Bryce can't export an object if it contains any booleaning or Bryce primitives.
