Subject: How to Create Entire Poser 3 or 4 Characters from scratch ?

Is there anybody knowing tutorials telling how to create entirely my new personal Poser Characters from scratch, (nothing taken from the Poser presets) just starting from any type of modeler software ? I would absolutely need to get how to create my own characters. It would be better work than tying "tricking" existing Poser presets, and deform or transform them. I 'd need to knoew how to create from scratch: *.obj files(which type ?, then how to create, always from scratch: *.hd2, *.rsr, *.pp2, *.png, *.tif textures, and textures-maps, and how to appply them.(This part, I think I can do it though). I 'd really need the total surgery-stuff & the Doctor "Frankenstein" technic in order to create cyber...Life for my creations ! So, if anyone can help precisely to let me know where I can find these informations, or about these specific tutorials, I will really appreciate it. _Is there a global tutorial teching all of this technic ? can you snd me an I.M. if you happen to know whether this kind of tutorials exist, here on Renderosity, or even if there is a "Poser for Advanced-Dummies" booklet ? You should ask this in the POser Forum, or modeling. Do you have a modeling software? I suggest getting propack if you do not already have it. A hd2 is basically just a morph of the head (I think).rsr's are just thumbnail pics (poser will auto make these) pp2 is a 3ds'/obj'/ dfx etc saved as a poser prop (again poser will convert this for you. I only know of one type of obj, the wavefront obj...are there others? the file type you need for characters that you never mentioned and where the meat of the matter is is a cr2, there are several places to find tutorials on this, PhilC I believe is prob your best bet but I have seen numerous others. Tutorial. Way 1 (Poser 4) Model the figure. Separate body parts into poser specific types (rShldr, lCollar, head, hip etc...) bring into poser group...spawn props...save as a obj. Grab a preexisting cr2 file with teh same internal parts as you created (rShldr, lCollar, head, hip etc...) rename to your creation, point the cr2 to your obj. open in poser tweek joint parameters resave. Way2 (poser pro pack) Create complete mesh Export and import into poser propack Bring to the set up room Bone from existing figure or create your own skeleton. Group bones to mesh when you are happy with grouping and everything is connected how it should be leave set up room Tweek Joint parameters Save as a figure. These are just two basic ways to create poser characters.

I'm no expert, and relatively new to Poser. However, if you want to make a model from scratch, you need a modeling program and time to learn it. And you need a good one like lightwave or Universe, etc. Poser Pro is good for morphing and manipulating existing models. You can do it in freeware and shareware for personal use if you have the gumption to dive in without training videos, etc (which are available for all the mid to high end modelers).

Hi Klaus,

here is our six-pence.

Creating mesh-objects (*.obj):
Setting alive our characters we start in RayDreamStudio/3DMax to create a mesh-object. We devide our mesh in several parts and name them. Also the setting of the material must be done in this mesh-object.

Creating hierachy-file:
After this we create a hierachy-file which includes all nanmed body-parts. To manage this subject we are using phibuilder, a very good program to create hierachy-files.

Importing hierachy-file into Poser:
If all steps above are succesful, the new cahracter is born in Poser (we are using 4.03). But!!! Now tricky finishings may be done in case of problems

  • resizing the mesh-object in RDS/3D-Max
  • correction the mesh of the body-parts
  • customizing the joint-parameters
  • setting the material
  • correct the hier-dat (*phi), if parts of the
    new character don't move like you want

After this, if everything is working fine in Poser:

  • creat the texture! This wonderful programm
    uvmapper is a fantastic tool to creat textures

So, a lot of work and pain is waiting for you. But the results are amazing, if your characters are acting in Bryce5 for example...

There are a couple of tutorials on figure creation in the rhino tutorial section. also, you might want to grab the demo version of this program. it is fully functioning, has no time limit....and, i heard the latest has 50 saves. cheaper than lightwave, and i think quite simple to use.

I have written a step-by-step beginner tutorial that walks you through the process of creating a figure (a gingerbread man) from scratch. Perhaps you would find it helpful.

twillis- excellent tutorial. I did notice a lot of pictures are broken links on the Carrara-based pages though. The problem is the image paths have "/..ImgCarrara" in them, instead of "/ImgCarrara/". My brower (IE5) doesn't like this, and shows red Xs in place of these graphics. -Adam

I just followed this tutorial as closely as I could, and it worked like a charm. I couldn't do the PHI builder step (i have a mac) but just typing the .phi out by hand worked fine. I successfully made an articulated Gumby! Thanks!
