OK, I'm playing with the idea of putting Marlin Fingle and company to work in the Poserworld Newsroom. One problem is that no chairs came with the set. So I am concerned about where to get a chair that's the right size. Then I'm wondering if this set is "to scale" for Millennium or P4 figures?! I honestly don't know how to tell. Don't they look a bit tall standing by the "table?!" Let's just say this is a picture of the newsroom's Halloween Party, and Jill was the only one to wear a costume.

willdial ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 9:37 AM

On the news, I rarely see the chairs they are sitting on. When I do, they seem to be low-backed office chairs. Sometimes, they have arm rests. Also, you are right, that table is short for Millennium characters. It probably was scaled to P4 figures.

Thanks for the tips. It looks like I'm running out of options for an environment for my Marlin characters. Tomorrow I'll try the Lava Bar. I suppose that is scaled for P4 characters as well.

Axe_Gaijin ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 9:56 AM

OK call me stupid but can't ya just change the scale to your liking?

Roy G ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 10:37 AM

I did a search in Free Stuff for the word chair and came back with 46 items.

whoopdat ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 11:47 AM

Yeah, I'd think you be able to scale the desk up on the Y axis at the very least, unless everything together (desk, walls, letters on walls, etc) are considered one entire object. (I have no idea seeing as I don't have the set.) If not, there's chairs in the free stuff, and www.3dcafe.com has lots of free items as well. It only takes a minute or two to scale things to the right size.

hmatienzo ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 12:41 PM

I don't know, there is hardly ANY prop I have seen that I don't have to rescale one way or another... No big deal. Ron, you might want to check out the DAZ newsstudio sets, cameras and all, a real great prop.

queri ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 5:27 PM

I rescale every darn prop I use, It's easy, first don't use y scale. Use Scale, just Scale, first-- anywhere from 5 to 10% should do it. Make sure you have the whole prop chosen-- if it comes in parts-- if not make sure they are all scaled to the same amount. I really did think this came with chairs, if it didn't, use the other office chairs at PWFW, they should match. Many things at PWFW are scaled for P4 or V2P4-- more people can use them that way. Easy to fix. Posing looks great, but is that the weather girl-- bit odd dress even for a weather girl? Emily

melanie ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 8:14 PM

Ron, you might check 3D Cafe and see if they have some chairs that would work. I think willdial is right, it's some sort of office chair, but I'm thinking the one on a higher leg. The taller type. The concierge in my office building sits on one of those tall swiveling office chairs, with a foot rung to rest her feet on. But, since you really can't see much of it behind the desk, you could even use stools. Melanie

I am such a wimp and putz here. I've messed with scale before and come out with a nightmare. Now if I have to seek out a chair and maybe scale that as well, that's frightening. I have a bunch of ideas for satire/cartoons, and not all of them involve the newsroom. Let's just say you can anticipate a host of characters and locations. Many of them shall work fine. I may spend some time refining the character's faces, and building their wardrobes. Marlin and Jill's bodies are "out of the norm," grin.

queri ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2002 at 11:35 PM

If you want to talk nightmare on scaling you should have seen me when I imported the Grey Spider and scaled it. I jumped so fast, I thought I'd knock over the puter. Finally decided that since I wasn't going in for extreme closeups, the webs would work just as well.:))) Arachnophobic, not me. I dont' think there is any word for arachnoterroroutsonesmind. Just remember as long as you do the main scale, it's pretty easy to set everything back and any dial can go back to default with alt/click. Emily

melanie ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 9:17 AM

True, as queri said, use the main scale dial, and alt/click on the dial and it resets back to 0. Also, once you get it scaled, you could save the prop to the props library and it should always come in that size, so you never have to rescale it again. Just be sure to turn the dial in very small increments and scale it slowly until you've reached the size you want. Melanie

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 9:51 AM

My trouble is knowing exactly what size to get. I always go nuts with that stuff. I've bought myself a reprieve here. I have a vision of another satire render involving a bunch of forgotten Poser characters who want to come out of retirement.. well I won't say any more. But I need to go through my entire collection of downloaded stuff and do some mass reorganizing so I can start this project.

Search freestuff for "ruler". May help in scaling things.

And search for office chair at PWFW props section.. there's a detailed one that came along with the very first update! :) Rena

Rena, now that you're involved with the discussion, maybe you can tell me if the newsroom is "scaled" for the P4 character or the Millennium characters? And if it's scaled for the P4, does PWFW have plans to make a new version that will fit for Mike & Vicky?!

Ron.. it's scaled for the P4 I guess. Steve made it and he's away to verify. But to scale items is just so easy in Poser, I doubt anybody would remodel anything just for that! :) If you want to to rescale something in all axis Ron.. you just select the model, go to Scale dial and from 100% you try 110% or 115% or whatever seems to suit your needs. That should do the trick with no extra hassle! :) Same way.. if you wish to scale something down.. from 100% try 95% or 90% and so on.. and you can even make stuff good enough even for a dwarf. Mike and Vickie are not the center of this world! :) :) Rena

The Mellennium people, as far as props are concerned, are not really in a different perspective as the standard P4 people. In the real world, people come in all sizes. There's a woman in my office who is barely 5' tall, and on another floor is a man who is nearly 7'. They can still sit on the same chairs and use the same furniture. I don't think you'll have any problem with them using the same props. When I scale an object for a character, I just scale it a couple of numbers on the dial and eyeball it. I would just try to sit the figure on the chair and determine if it's too large or too small, then keep fine tuning it until it's right. It doesn't have to be too precise, just so it looks normal. Believe me this is where I'm an absolute dummy. I remember months, or a year ago, trying this process. The results weren't pretty. I guess I'll search on for another home for Marlin.

Don't give up Ron.

Just use the scale dials. This silly image only took a few minutes.

Maybe I'm daft, or incompetent. I tried scaling the newsroon to 103% and 105%. I am focusing on the newsdesk in front of Marlin. The newsdesk actually seems to get smaller as I increase the scale of the newsroom! I checked, and there is no separate selection for the desk. Now what?

Roy G ( ) posted Mon, 29 July 2002 at 12:17 AM

When you scale the News Room up, the floor and ceiling move apart. You can see that the girl is now above the floor. Use the drop to floor option on the newsroom. You will also need to adjust the lettering and monitor, as they are separate props. I think if you parent the monitor and lettering to the newsroom first, they would scale along with the newsroom. You could also scale the characters, which is what I did with Brittany and her outfit. In your first image you could have just moved the characters down a little, since you cant see the floor, it would not matter if they were sunk down into it.

Thanks for trying to help, but have you loaded the newsroom yourself? there is no selection for the newsroom desk. Here are the only selections to make on the prop. By the way I'll deal with Jill later. Marlin has already been dropped to the floor, and the newsdesk is still smaller than it was.

Roy G ( ) posted Mon, 29 July 2002 at 10:38 AM

file_16829.jpg

The desk is part of the newsroom_1. Forget what I said about parenting the monitor and text, that does scale them, but they don't move around correctly that way.

You could use the grouping tool to remake the set the way you like it. Spawn props then export the different pieces. It's a little complicated but gets easier with practice.

In this image I scaled the newsroom vertically 140%. I used the grouping tool to separate the lettering in the center and deleted the rest. Then raised the monitor.
