( BW)(TX-CURIOUS-LABS) Curious Labs Announces 'Poser 5'; Next Release to Include Dynamic Hair, Cloth, Firefly Renderer, and Photo-Based Facial Modeling Business Editors/High-Tech Writers SIGGRAPH 2002 SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 2002--Curious Labs, Inc. today announced `Poser(R) 5', the eagerly anticipated new version of their award-winning 3D-character animation tool for artists and animators. Poser 5 will deliver unprecedented features combined with an ease of use that will enable artists, hobbyists and creative professionals access to technologies never before offered in one package. Poser 5 is expected to be available in late summer 2002 with a suggested retail price of US $549. Upgrades from previous versions of Poser and Poser Pro Pack will be available through a tiered price structure. "Poser has always been an innovative tool for the creation of 3D-character content," said Steve Cooper, president of Curious Labs. "Poser's formula for success has been a simple one. Make difficult 3D-character tools easy to master, and price those tools so that any artist can afford to buy them. Poser 5 is no exception to that formula. Dynamic cloth and strand based hair, photo-based facial modeling, and our exotic new FireFly(TM) Renderer would be impossible to find in any one 3D package without the addition of plug-ins. But these are just some of the new features in Poser 5. And of course, because it's Poser, using these exciting new features will be easy and acquiring them will be affordable." Poser 5 key new features include: -- Firefly(TM)Renderer- hybrid Micro-polygon Subdivision Surface and Raytracer render engine that enables: -- Rendertime smoothing of facets -- Displacement mapping -- 3D motion blur -- Depth of field -- Procedural textures -- Luminosity, refraction and reflection -- Shader Tree with material nodes -- Dynamic Cloth with physics and parameter controlled clothattributes -- Dynamic Hair with growth, styling and physics controls -- Facial Photo-based Modeling with scanned 3D human head andtexture database -- FacePutty(TM) for interactive sculpting, and caricature and random head generators -- All new highly accurate 3D human figures with fully articulated hands and feet, featuring photo-realistic texture maps and facial morphs from RuntimeDNA -- MorphPutty(TM) Tool -- Collision Detection -- Content Paradise Portal for in-Poser 5 access to online contentresources Poser 5 will initially be available for Windows; details about a Macintosh version will be announced later this summer. More information on Poser 5 will be made available at: www.curiouslabs.com.

{{sniff,sniff}} little mac user very sad, must wait longer. OK, you PC people work out all the bugs quickly so the mac version will be perfect upon release. {{pea green with envy}}

Oh, oh go look on the Vue forum, Poser into Vue, Daz models into Vue..... You wait years for something exciting to come along and everything happens at once..... very happy bunny....

c1rcle ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 12:10 PM

I've sold my pets for genetic testing, my kids are going to slave traders & my wife is going on the game just so I can get Poser 5. They don't know this yet but I'm sure they'll agree when I explain it to them :) If the renderer in Poser5 is going to be the best anywhere it would be nice to be able to export the atmospherics/shrubbery from Bryce & Vue to use in poser. shadowcat ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 12:25 PM

Did they announce the price & system requirements yet?

depakotez ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 12:29 PM

549$ USD for the full version, no word on upgrades or system requirements yet.

hogwarden ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 12:34 PM

Ouch. Let's see what the upgrade price is, huh? H:(

williamsheil ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 1:37 PM

I suppose that they may not decide the upgrade prices until later in the day, so this open to speculation.

Bundle price for Poser 4 and ProPack is currently $379US. That's a difference of $170 from the scheduled price for P5.

My guess is that if CL want to avoid the ire of any recent purchasers (or even continue to sell P4 products until P5 is out), the ProPack upgrade price will probably be $200 to $250.

UK prices from the official distributors were greatly inflated when ProPack was released. A couple of months later dabs.com had a much more competitive price.

It will be interesting to see if CL make any further statements to try to encourage P3 users to upgrade to P4 in the meantime, or whether this announcement marks the end of P4 marketing.

My current concerns are that there has been no mention of Python, and the projected release date seems pretty close for beta testing purposes where all indications are that less than a month ago development was still ongoing, with no images from the new render engine on show.

On the plus side, the specs hybrid renderer looks like the best of both worlds, quality and (hopefully) speed.

Bill

Poser 5 for the Mac had better be optimized for OS X 10.2 Jaguar, or I'm not even going to bother upgrading anymore.

Yes, I am sure my son won't mind being sold to the highest bidder, and the dog will have to reduce his meals to 3 turkeys a day instead of five, LOL! Food? Who needs food when there is P5!!!

It's a lot of Poser, LadyJaiven. You get what you pay for.

LadyJaiven ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 4:27 PM

This I know, doesn't mean it still isn't expensive though.

jchimim ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 5:50 PM

Well, let's suppose a new poser version/upgrade comes out every three years (?) If upgrading costs $250, that's less than $7 per month! Pretty "cheap" entertainment! (Now, if I can just convince my wife....) ;)

usslopez ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 7:01 PM

The guy at the Poser booth told me $349 for the full version... I hope I didn't missunderstand!! He didn't know what the upgrade was going to go for. BTW, the Poser booth at Siggraph was the most uneventful. It had a big Poser5 box and that was it. No demo and no handouts. The guy told me that it would be released in 5 weeks plus all the stuff that marlo said. Now for something that was going to come out in a little more than month you would think that they would have at least had a flyer. Can I get that in real time? The buzz word at Siggraph was "real time"... everything's in real time now... that's if you have a 1ghz processor.

(this was also posted in another thread below "Curios" about Siggraph): OK, just got back from the exhibition. Lots of cool things, but I know you guys are wanting to know about Poser. Well, compared to last year, Curious Lab's booth was a non-event. Last year they teamed up with Daz, had a large booth and lots of product demos. This year it was a VERY small booth with a VERY LARGE mock-up of the Poser 5 box (no pictures, sorry). They did not have any versions of Poser 5 that they were showing on the floor (although I hear they were showing it "behind closed doors". I did get the meet the very lovely and VERY GENEROUS Sydd Raven (THANKS!!!!!), and we chatted very briefly about P5. As you know she and her "team" - "Mr. Raven" have been involved in the development of P5 (textures, hair, figures). SHe stated that the rendering is beautiful, the cloth function works great, and that rendering times should not be too bad (however this is very subjective based on what all is being rendered and how it is being rendered). She mentioned the product should be out in "6-8 weeks", but I do not want to hold her to that, as I would rather the product be ready to go than released early, plus there are always delays in software delivery (plus CL has the final determination of when to let it go). I see most of you have seen the price for the new version. There WILL be a tiered price structure for people with P4 and/or P4 + Pro Pack. I was quoted a number for the upgrades by one of the individuals in the booth (not saying who), but I do not want to repeat as I do not know how "official" it is, although it was stated that those with the P4 + PP will have the cheapest price, one that I think is fair. In addition, there was a rep there from Reiss (I think I spelled that correctly) to talk about the upcoming plug-in for Maya. Now I know that most used of Poser most likely do not have a copy of Maya (at least legally) as they are (to date) targetted to different markets, but I find it nice that there is sincere interest from "the upper tier" products to link with the exceptional functionality that is in Poser. I wish them well. Sorry that there is not much else to say. You can ask questions, but I have already told you everything I know (except the numbers that I referred to above). On other matters, DAZ was nowhere to be seen, and I thought they were supposed to have a booth there. The Renderosity crew was there in full force, selling magazines, Tshirts, mugs, and a few other things. They had a great booth and it seemed to be busy all throughout the day. 3DCommune also had a booth, but the time I waled by there was noone there. There did have some handout regarding a "free subscription" to their magazine, so you guys may want to check it out. - Ray Yamka

markdc ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 8:06 PM

I'm shocked. Their booth was great last year. I especially liked what Daz showed.

Xena ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 8:30 PM

Hey Jai, try 549$ USD in AU. Poser 5 for us Aussies will run at approx $1,006.00 AU Now that's a fun little price huh 8^O

jchimim ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 8:51 PM

How about $26,571 Jamaican? or 830,362 Lebanese Pounds? Actually, 211 Omani Rials sounds better...

cherokee69 ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 8:58 PM

Ah, exccuse me people, but did anyone notie this "Poser 5 is expected to be available in late summer 2002" in that first message. Curious Lbas has nothing on their web site about Poser 5 being released yet and no option to purchase it. If it were released already, that would be the first place it would be available.

LadyJaiven ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 9:05 PM

Gosh Xena, that sounds way out there lol.. I guess it will be worth it, but still.. :

ronknights ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 9:55 PM

I don't think any Poser user cares about the "Full price," since we already own Poser, and would get the upgrade price.

Norbert ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 10:48 PM

Only being showed behind closed doors? But being released in 5 to 8 weeks? Pretty strange... Maybe the people who actually saw Poser 5 in action, had to sign a release saying they wouldn't tell anyone about how much the program crashed. Just going by past Poser releases here...

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 23 July 2002 at 11:58 PM

Norbert, Actually we were impressed by how far along it was... but couldn't say peep because they are still selling Poser 4. Something else for people to realize: CuriousLabs is a small company and all their resources are geared towards getting this software finished and in the box. If they'd spent money on boothbabes and revolving bandstands and glitterlights (yes, I've been to trade shows, every year), we'd be fretting that they were frivoling away funds which could go to programmers and writers and interface designers. You'd be aghast at what some of those set-ups run. Yes, they are entertaining, but I'd rather get my hands on this product than be distracted by fluff. Carolly

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Wed, 24 July 2002 at 2:09 AM

Amen, Carolly. Kate (waiting anxiously, credit card in hand, for the actual release)

5-8 weeks is a looooong time to wait for something that's going to knock everyone's socks off, I can't wait to get my hands on that manual, then you can have your pat on the back Anthony & you can have money to buy food again ;) Rob

c1rcle ( ) posted Wed, 24 July 2002 at 3:00 AM

anyway what you doing still awake? it's 3 in the morning shouldn't you be tucked up in bed by now? Rob

Nosfiratu ( ) posted Wed, 24 July 2002 at 3:41 AM

The pat on the back was a seagull who carried out an air strike as I slumped on an outdoor seat. What am I doing up? I hardly ever drink coffee, but I quaffed way too much of it today as I put the finishing touches on the Reference Manual. Now I'm wide awake babbling incoherently like Cornholio. Food? nose twitching Food? What's this "food" thing I keep hearing about? :-) Anthony
