Subject: An inquiry to links of people using Poser for animation

ryamka ( ) posted Wed, 24 July 2002 at 12:44 AM · edited Sat, 18 January 2025 at 6:30 PM

Actually with the discussions today on the whole P4 to P5 upgrade issue, I have begun to wonder about the use of the Poser "product" (which includes Pro Pack). I know the product is called "Pose-r" but the application also has animation capabilities, as well as finicky ties to Max, Cinema3D etc. I have seen so very little of this feature used by the community. It may be just that I am missing the links/postings, but I am sure that some users are doing amazing things with it. I know the perception of the product in many peoples minds is that it is a "toy" and not worthy of the attention of people who use "real" applications like 3DSMax, Softimage, Maya... But as users like Syyd Raven, Catherina Harders, and many others have shown, this little application can do incredible things. I am sure there are some out there who may have done similar incredible things with the built-in animation features... Anyone care to link?... (and before anyone retorts, "Why don't you show something" - I can only verbally explain how we have integrated Poser into our work environment). My company does visualizations for legal proceedings. We visually re-create actual events or create "hypothetical events" that are used in legal proceedings to show to judges, lawyers, and (very, very rarely, as there are some people out there who think because they saw something it must be real) to juries. These are created to be shown as examples, and not to be used as real evidence, of course)... We create these viz's CGI through a combination of 3D and live action as needed for the case. We mostly use 3DS Max and Maya, but we also use Poser for developing the animations. We use it either as a visual storyboard (still with text) or as an animatique - a rough draft of the animation cretaed in poser to act as a guide for creating it in Max or Maya. We usually only get involved in all of the lengthly pre-trial activity and usually for very big clients. Because what we do is covered by NDAs, I cannot show any actual work that we have created, but I wanted to at least provide an example of how the animation function is used.

I'm curious about your company. I'm a lawyer in Arizona and somewhat interested in using CG in a similar way.

I'm an animator. I use Poser almost exclusively; I don't export the animations to other applications. Thus, I'm looking forward to the next version of the software, which will allow me to render more realistic videos.

I don't do anything like the crime-scene visualizations used in legal proceedings (although I suppose I could), but I can show you some of my animation tests and work, if you care to watch:

Mirror Test #1 (MPEG format, 759KB)
Mirror Test #2 (MPEG format, 841KB)
Mirror Test #3 (MPEG format, 631KB)
Mirror Test #4 (MPEG format, 294KB)
Finished Mirror Video (MPEG format, 1.37MB)
Dance #1 (MPEG format, 1.92MB)
Dance #2 (MPEG format, 941KB)
Interview #1 (MPEG format, 779KB)
Interview #2 (MPEG format, 633KB)
Interview #3 (MPEG format, 537KB)
Architecture (MPEG format, 2.74MB)
Got your nose (MPEG format, 293KB)

Poser 5 supports real-world units, which is a huge help to undertakings such as this.

I've also been animating exclusively in Poser, the majority of my animations are too erotic to post directly here due to the TOS but a flavour can be got from the link above. I utilise Flash as a platform for their distribution and here's an example that doesn't violate: [Sensual](http://www.1st-shock.com/sensual.htm) about 900k...

Wow. Interesting use of CGI. It's yet another example of just how flexible this technology is - both entertaining and genuinely helpful. Thanks for your post. :-)

Here's a link to my Artist Page here on 'Rosity that includes a sprinkling of my Poser animation. (Nothing fancy, mostly just my sense of humour running riot) :-)

I should mention that the quality is pretty rough on some of them - I lost the originals in a HD crash, so these are the salvaged mini MPEG1 versions. (The originals were broadcast quality and pristine...boo hoo!)

You'll find the Poser "underground" of animators are a talented bunch - not many of us, but we love what we do with the program! (Check out Little Dragon and Wolf359's stuff!)

Dave :-)

I've gotta say, Little_Dragon... just looked at your "finished mirror video" and I'm very impressed... mainly with the quality of the movement of the "skunk girl" figure. It's so smooth and feminine. Did you key the animation yourself? If so I am Very impressed! Keep it up!! H:)

I use Poser only to animate (I think I only rendered one still image since Poser 3). I did a 25 minutes movie a while back and I am still impressed of the animation features of Poser 4. Sascha

The skunkette animation was provided by a motion-capture file in BVH format. Somebody recorded the movements of a real dancer and posted them on the 'Net. I have some skill at keyframing, but if I were to do the dance videos and mirror video entirely by hand, I'd still be working on them by the time Poser 5 is released. Thanks for the kind words, davidm and hogwarden.

I use Pro Pack with Max for animating. Poser animation tools are so simple! It's just you and the key frames with none of the B.S. other high-end packages have. Here are a few of my recent tries.

Nosfiratu,

Real world units? Do the units translate to in/cm and/or foot/meter?

Does this mean that we will be able to create characters with a specific height? If so, then can you tell us how tall Victoria, Stephanie, Posette, Mike and Dork are in Poser 5?
