THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Thick, puffy clouds.

I am having trouble making a realistic puffy white cloud. I have tried making a sphere and giving it a cloud texture, setting transparancy, etc, and duplicating it, but it still looks very rounded at the edges. Does anybody know how to get around this?

This problem is universal. Some Brycers are better at it than others. Do you have Susan Kitchen's Real World Bryce book? There is some excellent information in there. I've done some nice clouds, but only through a lot of tinkering. Unfornately, I don't always document how I got there... :-)Also, you may want to check some of the tutorials out there as they may be helpful.

try using a cloud layer may help a lot maybe not what you want, but can try it was just a tip

You might try sizing your sphere into a more oval shape. This can make the cloud look more natural and less rounded.

lots. big. non overlapping ovals. adjust frequency (usually less) "smokestack" works well- maybe more trans...

Don't be afraid of using the defaults for volumetric clouds - they're very good. This pic was the top part of a a-bomb render I did to test out how clouds work when I first got Bryce. I tweaked the settings but mostly it's default stuff. It looks a little different purely because of the lighting - get your lighting right (like inverface's pic above) and your clouds will looks 100% better.

Ooops - I pressed Post instead of using return!? <: DUH! I was going to add that to alter the fuzziness of a cloud's outline, just mess with the fuzziness control under base density. You can then have totally defined clouds or very wispy clouds with little effort. Beware two things, though - 1) If you overlap volumetric shapes, Bryce throws up giant and nasty artefacts that you'll need to correct in post. 2) For a decent cloud you'll need a quality of 60% plus. The ones above were 75-ish, as I recall, but I think you'll only need to go above 80 if you're going for 300dpi+ hardcopy.

I used rock objects with cloud texture in the Pegasus image in my gallery. Came out ok and the rocks don't have those perfect round edges either. Also, there's a tremendously wonderful tut at www.3dcommune.com on doing realistic clouds and skyz. By far the best work I've ever seen in Bryce and unbelievably realistic.
