Subject: Posette and Vicki...

gorak33 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 6:44 PM · edited Wed, 13 November 2024 at 7:16 AM

Hey all Well, I don't share the love for vicki and stephanie that everyone has for them. They make my machine run as though my processor were a very old, wheezy gerbil running on a wheel. So, I've had to be creative in my use of posette and in recognizing her limits. But, unfortunatly, lots of the coolest clothes around come only for victoria and steph...Manually tweeking them can only carry one so far, too... So: The question: Are there any programs/scripts/etc. that can allow me to quickly make vicki clothes fit posette like a glove?

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 7:12 PM

No ... but you could try Victoria Reduced Resolution. She doesn't have many more polys than Posette, and she can wear all of Victoria's clothes. You could also try stripping any unused morphs from the Victoria/Stephanie CR2s. The meshes themselves are only 3MB or so, but in Victoria's case the CR2 weighs in at 20MB.

Look for Tori in the freestuff, I think by Shadowcat. I haven't tried her, but unless I'm getting names mixed up, I think she's a Posette reshaped to be able to wear Vicki's clothes.

Just a lil hint...DON'T...DO NOT... search for Tori in the free stuff..look for shadowcat...."Tori" finds everythiing having to do with VicTORIa....lol Beav

Which can be fun in itself, but probably not what you're looking for. ^_~

Gorak, try the libraries at PoserWorld/FairyWoods (PWFW). They're not free but the subscription fee is very reasonable and they have some of the best looking clothes for Posette I've ever seen. Nothing against the many fine artists here, of course; I'm sure most of them would agree with me.

But I can't give you the address of PWFW, it's a deeply guarded secret! (Just kidding to cover my own dumbness!) Here it be.

I found Victoria easy enough to work with on even my older mac (300Mhz G3). As long as you have enough RAM and patience, you can make her work for you. The sugeestion of the reduced resolution figure is also a good one, she's almost as nice. I know there are a lot of hardcore fans of Posette out there, and I agree with them that default Posette is a lot cuter than default Victoria... but that's about where my agreement ends. I don't ever use Victoria in any default sense. I've morphed the heck out of her, and that's why I appreciate her ample poly count. There is just so much more to work with. To me, hearing the argument that Posette is a "better" figure than Vicky from people with slower computers and people who've never made morph targets is akin to listening to someone still using 256 color monitor extol the virtues of GIF over JPEG. Some guy actually flamed me on usenet once, saying I was stupid to use JPEG because it was lossy, unlike GIF. To him I replied "Knocking 16.7 million color shades down to a palette of 256 isn't lossy?!?" (we were talking in context of full-color photos) In the hands of skilled morph technicians, Vicky can do great things indeed. I would like to encourage you not to give up on her yet. Those who have truly experienced working with Vicky are not usually looking back... -Adam

"In the hands of skilled morph technicians, Vicky can do great things indeed." Yep! but so can Posette, case in point - starting from Fredrick (p3 days) and continued with Yamato and all his characters new joint parameters with less breakage than Vicki. Staale's bodymorpher can shape her into almost all Vicky 2 types, and Traveler's morphs that we older members collected almost religiously have never been matched in quality and quantity :) They're now available on his CD and can do things to Posette you've never imagined. AprilYSH's remapping allows her to take Vicki maps. Count me in as one of the hardcore users of Posette but also use Vicki, it depends on what I want her wearing, since I can work with both equally well and since I'm not into animation and thus can postwork flaws. BUT, my fully decked out Posette with real eyes, morphing brow props, lash props, collection of morphs etc weighs in at 57MB!!! And like someone pointed out in an earlier thread, he's seen Poser 3 users with PSP turning out better art than Poser 4, Max, Photoshop combined, so it's not about WHAT you have but HOW you work with it :)

I waited months till I could afford to obtain the Millennium Figures. Then I gleefully abandoned Dork and Posette. Once and awhile I read discussions like this, and drag them back to the working stage. I soon get tired of their limitations, and put them back in the closet.

I think it would be neat to see one of Posette's loyal fans subdivide and rebuild her with a similar poly count as vicky. I've made a lot of Posette morphs, but because of the low poly count it's really easy to start getting areas of her body that look faceted and cast angular shadows. In my experience, there are just too few polygons in her face to do nice closeups. I think if someone would bring posette into a modelling program, do some subdivision on her and then rebuild her as a figure, she could compete better with Vicky. I think she would still fit in her old clothes just fine too. Who knows, the P5 female might be the answer to everyone's prayers--a high-polygon count figure that looks like Posette. :-) Hoping... -Adam

Yes, any debate on Vicki etc needs to be suspended until we see what P5W is like to work with.

Since it has come to call, perhaps I should explain why I like posette. 1) My view on art. I'm a big fan of creating insta-art, meaning that as soon as I've cognized the idea, I want to create the image and move on to a new idea. Often times the initial idea will go through three or four different stages of growth and change. But in order to realize that growth, I need the machine to move as quickly as I do. Thus, on my crappy p500/64 meg ram machine, posette allows me flexibility. Even if I can't adjust every single little part of her earlobe, she does fine by me. 2) I refuse to suffer for my art. Who am I really trying to please other than myself? By this logic, I've found that I don't need to spend hours working on a render in order to be happy. Often, I don't even bother postworking what I make. If her arm's funky looking, I just leave it at that. I'd done what I set out to do... 3) I rarely morph a character at all, let alone enough to need the precision of vicky or steph... A lot of what I do relies on clothing, hair, props, lighting and texturing in order to create different characters. Very contextual. Despite the fact that I use the same damn posette every time (I love Gabrielle...She's my weapon of choice,) most people would be hard pressed to recognize her from picture to picture. Thus, the magic of hair and clothing is evident. This is also why I need access to Vicki's catalogue of clothing...I've made her stuff fit posette many times, but it never quite suits me... All this isn't to say that the milennium people aren't incredible...They are...They just aren't for me...

Supermodel Lori say that the Posette is a piker on poly count, she has 6000 less herself (10,000 against 16,000), half as many as low-res Vickie too! (who has about 20,000, if I recall) Actually, she only thinks that, as she can't actually open her mouth and say anything, as that was one of the corners Jim cut to save polys. She hums in a way that I can understand, though. Be intresting to see how she looks in Poser 5, with the new rendering and stuff. She already poses about as well Posette, plus she has her knees where they belong! Her price is very economical, too, you will not find a less-expensive figure... ;-) Shame on you if you didn't get low-res Vickie when she was free, too!

lmckenzie ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 9:22 PM

Looks very sweet Jim, I must try her out. You definitely have a place in the Poser hall of fame. A good feminist might take issue with the non-opening mouth, but hey... Let's not forget Eve either for loy maintenance. She poses better than Posette and Ken1 has done some great characters for her (Posette as well). I think Vicky was too expensive for the Japanese modelers, but they're starting to create some characters for the free lo-res version. I think we should get the government to supply Poser 5 to Japan as foreign aid.

I second that. I have so much difficulty getting anything that looks nice out of Vicki; Eve is much more gratifying to work with.

crisjon1950 ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 8:15 AM

Sorry, folks. I know Lori is beautiful and all. But I can't use a woman who can't even open her mouth. Uhm, well, there are times some women get on my nerves.. but in the long run I'd rather they could open their mouths.

Ha! The other reason that she doesn't open her mouth is so nobody can see she has no teeth! (She is so embarrassed!) I should have put a link in, too. You will need either Vickie or Low-res Vickie to extract her, incidently.

lmckenzie ( ) posted Mon, 05 August 2002 at 3:26 AM

Harry Mudd would have liked her just fine.

"My friends, I have the perfect Poser female model for you. She's absolutely sexy and beautiful. And what's best of all, she can't open her mouth or smile. And she has no teeth." God, would some overly-macho men have get a kick out of this woman?! Message671422.jpg
