Subject: With Poser5 only a month away shouldn't we be seeing more of its new features?

farang ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 7:48 PM · edited Sat, 25 January 2025 at 7:21 AM

I'd like to see more of the strnd based hair. And isn't everybody curious how the new cloth modeling is going go work and collision detection are going to work?

only a month!! WHOO HOO!!

leather-guy ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 8:11 PM

If you do a search on Kupa, you'll find several threads in the last few days where he's answered questions, clarifying and expanding on what we've been told before. Couple of things he can't discuss, yet, it seems, but he's amplified a lot on those points. He's mainly been posting in threads after they've been discussed for a while, so unless you were on the Ebot list, you'd only know if you searched back a ways.

farang ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 8:12 PM

Yes, I've seen the same video as everyone else here but with unprecedented new features such as collision detection, cloth modeling and strand based hair don't you think that Curious Labs would be doing more to showcase these features? Maxon's Cincma4D "Dynamics" plugin promised the same features but the limitations to using them made the plugin one big RIP OFF! I wonder if the new collision, cloth, etc. features promised by Curious Labs have some very serious limitations which they are trying to keep quiet by not saying much about until a month after its release after enough people have plunked down their money for the product.

leather-guy ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 8:31 PM

I'm not talking about the video, I'm talking about remarks Kupa posted in the last 48 hours or so. If you're really that concerned, there's and easy solution -just don't get Poser 5 until it's been out a couple of days. I expect rants about any such shortcomings like that to be posted here approx 12 minutes after members start opening the boxes. From what was said in Paula Saunders' thread about her interview with him at SIGGRAPH, I don't expect such limitations.

ryamka ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 10:30 PM

Ok, hold it a second. Let me take a deep breath... NO SPECIFIC DATE FOR THE RELEASE OF POSER 5 HAS BEEN GIVEN!!!!! There. I had to say it, as this is like the third article with someone saying this, raising everyone's expectations that the product may be out this month. Curious Labs have released NO SPECIFIC dates for the release of Poser 5. The closest they have said is summer and/or 6 to 8 weeks (verbally at SIggraph). This was during the week of Siggraph. So using this date, it could be up til the end of September, or even later. Things can go wrong. Software is always getting delayed. It is a fact of life. I can see it now, come the end of the month and no Poser. People will be in here moaning and complaining that the product is late. It will be ready when it is ready. Oh yeah, farang, this was not directed at you. I am just trying to make sure people manage their expectations regarding the availability it. If it comes out earlier, I will be in line with everyone else. - Ray Yamka

Paula Sanders interviewed Kupa at SIGGRAPH. She wrote an article about it. She posted a link to the article she wrote in the first post of the thread at this link. The first sentence in the article is "For all of you who are wondering, Poser 5 is nearing completion with a release date scheduled for sometime in August." Kupa posted Comments later in the same thread and didn't dispute the statement. That's the most specific reference I've seen.

kbade ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 11:29 PM

I wasn't surprised when the Sanders piece said August, since CL has had a promo workshop scheduled at DragonCon for some time. However, Legume is entirely correct in noting that otherwise, the official line has been "late summer." My working assumption is that CL would like to get it out this month, but with software release schedules being what they are, the official line gives them some wiggle room to avoid the very complaining Legume mentioned. As for the clothing, the Sanders review gave no hint of limitations, and I would think that if there were serious limitations, kupa would be trying to subtly lower expectations in the threads to which he's posted in the last few days. The CL folk are pretty good businesspeople; they know that overhyping P5 would be disastrous for them in the long-term.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 11:32 PM

I suppose we could start a pool, chip in a few dollars each ... if enough of us contribute, whoever comes closest to guessing the true release date ends up with enough cash to actually pay for the upgrade. Or we could just wait and see, since we don't have any choice in the matter. (I'll take September 15th ....)

kbade ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 11:36 PM

BTW, though the upgrade price has not been announced, kupa did recently note that the $549 in the press release is the MSRP, and that the average street price for P4 was about 30% lower.

ryamka ( ) posted Sat, 03 August 2002 at 11:40 PM

Just to point out, Kupa is not exactly answering all questions at this time, if you will look at his responses in other comments. He may have glanvced over it for now. Other people, including myself, spoke to the Curious people at Siggraph, and they used the words "6-8 weeks" and "late summer" to us. Since it was at the same time, our conversations are just as valid. All I am trying to do is just keep people's expectations in line. It will be done when it is done. As the "beaned-one" said above, do you want it NOW or do you want it RIGHT? Well, I want it now, but I am willing to wait as long as necessary. I am just concerned that people are going around quoting August, and when the web site goes live next week and if it does not mention a specific day, we are going to get endless threads from people complaining that the program is late come the end of the month. Problems and issues come up in testing and final review of products. Sometimes these are SEVERE and crippling, and they only turn up on the very last days. These can cause the product to be delayed days, weeks, even months. I hope not, but it happens, all too frequently. Case in point - check out any of the major game-related sites where the developers actively participate. Whenever a date for even a freaking demo is missed people get all pissy. It is not like the company owes them the demo. They are trying desperately to get the game out the door, and all they get for their efforts are people whining, moaning and sulking in their forums. I would rather any company work to finish the ultimate product right, and not worry about extraneous stuff until the final product is done. And if it takes as long as necessary, then fine. We will all be better off for the extra time. - Ray Yamka

Yeah, I think most are in agreement on making no wine before its time. But to get back to the original topic, kupa has been posting details about both the hair and cloth features...just not screen shots.

::shake head until the beans rattle:: Guys, settle down! Sheesh!! I've been in the games industry 15 years and if anything you are worse than the ones hovering over the developer's shoulders. ::shake head again:: At least they don't try to make the games, too. Between drool, hot breath, and cattle prods, it's a wonder if the programmers can concentrate at all... and as for the debuggers? I'm sure that they have their hands too full of real problems and quirks to go looking for imaginary ones. One thing about the games industry: 3 PM on the Friday of release date and a tester turns in a Class A bug? It happens, and I've seen it. And we've all seen the hailstorm and brickbats if that game is released anyway. I'd rather that they don't give a date, than be forced into a dilemna. Think about Santa's Workshop. If you were asking about his flight schedule, complaining about the brand of paint, wondering if the wood was from environmentally-logged areas, demanding to see the blueprints, asking if the dolls come with clothes, names, & adoption papers, and if the trains come in various guages.... it would be Christmas of 2040 before the sleigh would be prepped and ready. As someone mentioned above, every time Steve answers a question or posts an image it is time spent away from the final push. He probably does this to take a break from a render or a calculation (I know many of us do)... but we shouldn't tempt him. He wants to show this off. He really, really, REALLY does. I saw his face when he was demoing it... as delighted as a kid in "show & tell". But he has to get it done. And he has to supervise a crew of people all sweating to get it done and done right... or as right as possible. It is close, so close... please don't distract them. Carolly

I have made a bet with myself, that every time I log on ther will be one more post about P5. How about a contest to see if people can go one whole day without mentioning it.

I'm just as excited about Poser5 as everyone else here, but if they release it in a month & it's not quite finished people are going to be bitching every day till a patch comes to fix it. I'm sure everyone at CL wants to release Poser5 right this second but they know better than the rest of us they have to get it right for them as much as for us. After years of playing games & seeing release dates move every 5 seconds lets be thankful we're not waiting for the game duke nukem forever, it's now over 4 years late. All we have to wait is a few weeks to a couple of months, be patient. Kupa will show us more when he can, he has said that himself more than once. Rob

"and that the average street price for P4 was about 30% lower."...ahhhhhh, that must be why us Brits pay over 30% extra on the reccomended price, you're taking our share of the bargins available ;o) For those not aware, the exchange rate for purchasing Poser in the UK works out to one Britsh Pound to one US Dollar! Cheers

quixote, i really hope it will be septemebr 10th, 'cause that's my birthday ;)

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 7:21 AM

I really don't think it will be August, middle to late september is a much more realistic estimate, any time between now & christmas would be good tho. Rob

dan whiteside ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 7:44 AM

At least the PC version has some sort of release date! I'll be pleasently surprised if the Mac version comes out before the end of the year, but I'm not counting on it :-)

jchimim ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 8:03 AM

Right now, I'd rather have the folks at CL getting everything right with P5 than spending their resources making cute demos. They gave us a feel for what was coming, got some feedback, and now they're on the "home stretch." Let them do their jobs.

quixote ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 8:11 AM

aleks I picked that day 'cause it's my father's birthday. Well, Poser 5 should be a Virgo... but we'll all be virgins. Q

you do realise the first people to buy poser5 will have at least 200 questions a day fired at them, All the questions we're asking the guys at CL now will be directed at those fortunate enough to have poser5 first. Rob

jchimim ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 8:20 AM

Great point Rob. So for the "early adopters," resist the temptation to announce it in the forums so you'll have time to play with it? :p

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 8:23 AM

I'll give myself at least a week to play with it before I say anything, I'm planning to buy on day one :) Rob

really aleks?, does the collision detection work on his clothes? which version is he? lol ;) j/k too Rob

What is non-linear animation? as far as P5 is concerned? First question.

I have great faith in Curious Labs. I know they're doing the best they can, and want Poser 5 to be the best version of Poser so far. Yes, I'd love to have a new toy to play with Today! Yes, I'd love to have wads of expendable cash so I could easily buy all those wonderful new toys. I'll sit back and wait, and drool every time I see another thread with more Poser 5 information. Thanks, Curious Labs, Kupa, and all on the team, for taking the time to make Poser 5 the best Poser version. And thanks for taking the time to give us some information on the way.

aleks ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 11:43 AM

no, in fact i have twin daughters (1 1/2 yers old) and apart from obvious cross-talk between them they have advanced diapers-stick-to-skin hardware (well, hmm, it's really software) extension that helps them to keep their clothes on. ;)

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 11:48 AM

heh, I know what you mean, software that can turn to soggyware at a moments notice, been there, changed the diapers, been peed on more than once :) we're well past that stage now, the oldest of my 2 boys is starting to discover girls, that's a whole different thread ;) Rob

jchimim ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 11:52 AM

don't forget the "vapor-ware" that accompanies the "diapers-stick-to-skin hardware," as well as eminates for the "diaper archive" (and makes you appreciate the smell of used cat litter!) Hey! There's an idea for you TrekkieGrrrl! A used diaper!

markdc ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 1:45 PM

They should be happy that so many people are interested and excited to know the release date :)

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 1:50 PM

I bet they're more excited about the release date than we are, all that time developing poser5 to finally be within sight of releasing it into the wild , if that was me I'd be going mad trying to get it finished asap so I could release it to the adoring fans (us). Rob

crisjon1950 ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 1:58 PM

I think some of us have nothing better to do than speculate about when Poser 5 will be released. And the heck of it is that we have numerous threads all on the same subject.

sbucci ( ) posted Sun, 04 August 2002 at 9:24 PM

Kupa, take all the time you need. I still have more Flash MX to get through and that'll just go out the window if P5 comes out too soon. :)
