"So hoist up the John B's sails, see how the main sail sets, Call for the captain ashore, and let me go home. Let me go home, I want to go home, Well I feel so break up, I want to go home." SMV has already told the Pin-up she augta wear a lifevest if she is going to hang off like that! I've been working on this one on and off for along time, I finally figured out all the answers to questions like getting the job over to the other side (and other winch) for sailing on the opposite tack. While I was at it I put in both a working jib and a genoa, pretty nice I think! I'll never make enough on sales to cover my time, but things like this are a nice break once-in-awhile.

Very nice shape and details (the boat I mean...yes really :-)) What kind of class is it? Can it use a spinaker? This reminds me that I haven't been able to sail for the last three weeks. Either no wind or thunderstorms :-(((( Marc P.S. I see the keel of the ship through the water, but I don't see the rudder?

Nice boat model, but the water texture could use some work.

Yeah, water is tough in Poser! I just used the ground plane with a lettle blue-green added to th eground texture and some transparency, doesn't look all that bad, does it? I expect th eboat will look really nice in Bryce, maybe even in Poser 5! I sort of O.D. on this boat, the final (I hope) Max file was 99b! I was thinking about a spinaker, but that got left out, mainly because all the space on the maps is taken. There is both a working jib and a genoa. I used geometry switching for the jib, as I couldn't figure out how to get the sheet over to the other winch! The mainsail does tack though, and the rudder works (it is there), the companionway doors open and the hatches slide or open. There is pretty much a full interior too, plus I'm going to include a camera set that can get you inside, first time I've ever done that. I think it is going to go for sale at PoserPros, if and when th estore opens there. I have no idea what I'm going to sell it for, but it will be more than $19.98 and less then $40! It is pretty much done except for the textures, the sails in particullar need work! Isn't any particullar boat, but it is medium close to a Dragon, I think. I scaled it to be 30' long, based on a 6' Vicky.

Check out the blondes' hair, should it be blowing off to her right? The boat is not level, so it is turning, would this action blow the models hair?

mjtdevries ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 1:47 AM

A bit off-topic but the boat probably isn't turning at all. These kinds of boats are hardly ever sail level. The wind in the sails always pushes it sideways, and with the resistance from the keel that means the boat will always tilt away from the wind. Only smaller boats that don't have a keel, but where the crew maintains the balance should be sailed level. Also judging the position of mainsail and genua the blondes' hair should be flowing backwards. (Wind coming in from around 2 o'clock). Poser5 should make that a lot easier :-)

Jim, what are those dark stripes on the hull? It's not a texture is it? Maybe a higher shadow map size would fix that? (Might want to do that anyway for the shadow the genua throws on the mainsail. That looks kinda poserish :-)) I'm thinking about two details you might want to add to the boat: Most of such boats I see have some sort of railing at the bow. Sometimes just a short one. I think it would look very good on this one. And for shots in the late afternoon or evening, like your second render, navigations lights might give a nice touch. Something I would try with the first picture is to play with the light intensity. Set it at 150% for example. I find that that can give the impression of a very bright and sunny day with the a bright sun shining. Poser renders always give me the impression that there is a cloud in front of the sun :-) Then again, maybe that is what you intended since the shadows are also quite soft?

Jim Burton ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 12:42 PM

Those stripes are the regular problem Poser has with shadows on light colors, I should have put the shadow map size up. I might add the lights and a little bow pulpit (sp) rail, but maybe as parented props, I just realized I should add winch handles that way too! I did break down and add a spinnaker, after all, see the new thread I just started.

Maybe it's an electrical winch? ;-)
