Are my specs too low for higher end textures ? Win 98 800 MHZ Intell 256 ECC Rambus Prophet II 64 Meg DDR Vid Card 647 Meg free on same HD was Poser 4 Would SDRam be a better method ?

I have the same problem. Other threads here have said that it's a Windows '98 program. The way '98 handles ram doesn't free up enough for Poser to do large renders. I'm hoping that Poser 5.0 has a better rendering engine. Others here have said that upgrading to XP will fix the problem. Daz says that a memory management utility should do the trick, but I have Memo boost and I still have trouble with rendering large images. I'll check out Poser 5 when it's available, if that doesn't solve the problem I will probably simply have to upgrade to XP, though I'm afraid of headaches.

For me it's not the size of the render ...it's the size of the textures it seems. But i agree about being concerned with XP ...personally I avoid MS products until they're about 2 years old ...since that's roughly when most of the bugs are out :)

I have the same problems. big renders, or big textures, or more than one character in the scene. I have Windows 98 Pentium 4 1.7GHz 256 Ram Gforce 2 64 :(

I use to have the same problems until I upgraded to XP. Have not had a single lockup since then. Peggy

I have WinME and 512 megs of ram and I lock up on Vicky/Michael and decent sized textures for them. I have a feeling XP will fix my problem but... I'm scared to reformat my drive to install it. XP itself doesn't bother me, my sister's machine has it and it works fine. It's the install that freaks me out.

I used to have the same problem with win98se the only way I could get round it was by lowering the resolution of the textures, anything over 1000x1000 would crash poser, I've now got WinXP & just to test it I increased the resolution of a texture to 5000x5000 & it didn't even blink :) Chailynne if you've got the room on your harddrive you could dual boot WinME & WinXP. Yeah, I had the same problem. I actually had a gig of ram installed - but I was running ME so it just wasn't getting used. Installed XP pro and everything has been sweetness and light since. Jack

The problem is definitely due to Win 98. It doesn't have sufficiently robust memory, process and thread handling to cope with the huge demands Poser makes on your system. Temporary solution: 1. Use texs at lower res 2. Don't use bump maps. 3. If you have to have several mil filgures at once, obj them out to body morphs and throw away all the other morphs you don't have to have for the scene. I installed Win2K, not a hang since then. I got them every day when I had '98. Oh, by the way - if you get a hang, always reboot the machine to clear it out - just restarting Poser is not enough. :] FishNose

So what do you suggest? Win2000 or WinXP? do I have to format my PC? or can I just upgrade my Win98 and install the new OS on Win98?

c1rcle ( ) posted Tue, 13 August 2002 at 4:21 AM

hmmm XP & 2K are pretty much the same for stability, if you can find 2k anywhere it'll probably be cheaper than xp, but unless you have a huge harddrive with loads of space then formatting is going to be the answer. Rob

thank you. I have 5 Giga spare space. I hope it will give good results...

hmatienzo ( ) posted Tue, 13 August 2002 at 6:59 AM

Don't bank on XP... I have that and it still locks up every large render. For me, reducing any texture from 4000 helps a lot, but even then, XP adjusts the silly swap file for ages...

Err... Haven't CL recently released a memory updater for Poser 4.03? That might help! H:)

Chailynne ( ) posted Tue, 13 August 2002 at 12:07 PM

Hard drive space is the least of my worries. I have a 40 gig main drive with 14 gigs free. Will be a lot more if I reformat, I won't reinstall everything on that drive. And my secondary is 80 gig with 30 gig free. LOL That's my poser drive. Guess I need to do more research on installing XP so it doesn't scare me so much. I really would like to use higher res textures and more figures in my renders.

i have win 98 on my main drive, high detailed poser pics crash, my tech put xp on my second drive and i have not had a single prob with poser, it runs like a dream, i was even able to leave poser on the old drive and only access it from my d drive with xp
