Subject: Files that Kill Poser?

bloodsong ( ) posted Thu, 09 March 2000 at 11:02 AM · edited Thu, 26 December 2024 at 9:37 PM

heyas; i sent a p4 file (obj, cr2 and rsr-library file, not the obj rsr) to somebody with p3 to test, you know, make sure it would open okay in a previous version. well, the file started to open, said new version, blah blah, tried to open anyway, and then had an invalid page fault. it did that twice, and after the second time, poser 3 would NOT run. my guess is, the poser.rsr or even the exe got screwt. they tried copying those two files from the cd, but that didn't work. a full re-install is next. can a poser figure do that? i mean... does anybody know WHAT corrupts the poser.rsr; can it be files like this? also, somebody said you can write protect the poser.rsr file, right? instead of restoring it from backup all the time. i'll have to go through the cr2.... i didnt do anything fancy with the files, no transparencies or reflections. i did create ik chains with the heirarchy editor instead of in phi-build, though.... hmmm... any thoughts?

I've heard this a lot from other people Bloodsong. They try to open a certain figure and the program craps out. I don't know why. It's never happened to me personally. You can change the Poser.rsr and .exe files to read-only. That should prevent that from happening in the future. ScottA

I had this problem once - And as far as I can remember it I deleted (to RecycleBin) some file that were only on Poser3 - Not Existed on Poser4 any more (I Think). Delete the files that have 640x480 or 800x600 the same file with your Screen Resulution and try to make poser create a new one (Also need to delete a current file). I know I did that and Poser3 comes back to life - Till Poser4 Came along and killed it :). Your Friend Arye Guetta Hope I helped

The times I've ended up with a dead RSR was when I did a Control Alt Delete though it could be the figure that caused it in the first place.......Steve

Check your polygons on the new character. If you have polygons with more than 4 sides, Poser3 will crash.

Seriously? Wow, I'm going to go download Anthony Appleyard's utility on the FreeStuff right now. I have wondered what it was for.

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

That has happened to me several times, in P3 and even in P4. Each time it was due to wrong placement of the .obj file the .cr2 was looking for. The .obj path has to be exactly the one written on the .cr2. Maybe that is the mistake. Hope this helps. Emilio

One thing that has happened to me a few times is if I am running both Painter3D and Poser4 at the same time. And I edit a texture then swithch to poser to check and see how it looks. Poser will eventually lock up on me when I'm in the materials window. When I do a ctrl+alt+del. The figure says "can't find .obj". Even though it's really there. Deleting the .rsr in the geometries folder solves the problem. So I'm guessing this is an internal memory handeling problem in Poser. ScottA

Just another suggestion :) Instead of trying to open a P4 CR2 with P3, I found that it is better to import a poser document as .pz3 I have tried that and it worked. Hope this little Ideas are usefull for you. Best Regardings Virus
