Subject: Legionairre

Has anyone bought the new Legionairre from DAZ? How does it compare with the one posted in Free Stuff a while ago by thip and Rena?

Very good and different, they would look good in an image together, but the bigest advantage is commercial use, always an issue with me. While Thips work is great!!!! It is not for commercial use.

Thip always allows his work for commercial use. Thip correct me if I am wrong. He also does excellent work. Ron

Thip's stuff is useable for commercial images (says so in the read-me). I'll go change the little tick boxes (I didn't do that when renderosity added that feature) Same goes for my stuff too.

you've gotta watch that for older freebies, some people haven't gone through and changed it (it's really tedious to do, especially for a lot of items) and just to avoid any confusion for anyone (mainly those who might wander through) I am not thip, I host thip's old files & am in charge of their postings here. check out poserstyle.com for thip's new works.

Here is a trial render in Vue. The Daz figure seems to be very accurate for 20th Roman Legion stationed in England. I just haven't researched the Thip Legionaire - it looks pretty good but seems to be from a different time period (or region) than the DAZ version.

In the imperial period the crest was worn by centurions only. On the Daz site it shows the Legionnaire with out the crest. I like Thips work but it is not accurate. The Daz model is the model you want if youre looking historical accuracy.

Heres a model Ive been working on. I need to fix certain things but its a good start.

Thanx for the nice comments, everyone. As to the various points raised above : - The legionnaire is by RenaPD and me, not just me (wouldn't look half as good without Rena's superb tex's). - It's perfectly OK to use the legionnaire for commercial work - The DAZ legionnaire is an authentic imperial-type legionnaire - Rena's and my legionnaire is an ordinary legionary from the so-called Marcomanic Wars on the Danube - different period, different place, different look ...and I think the DAZ legionnaire looks terrific !!!! Thip, I think your work is excellent. I am not familiar with the Marcomanic period in roman history. About what time was it and where can I get some info on the legionnaire of Marcomanic period?

By the way although my model looks like DAZs model it is not. I have to go back fix certain things but been to busy. When I get my new machine (a dual Athlon MP 2100+) Ill update my Legionnaire.

From what little research I've done the one done by Thip and Rena appears to more of a cavalry legionairre. The oval shield and breeches from what I understand was typical of Roman cavalry in the first century. The texture for the armor and helmet are more ornate than what would typically be seen being worn by a solider in the field though (not that I'm criticizing it mind you). Generally it wasn't until the later Roman period that the armor was mostly metal. Before that it was leather, leather with metal, or leather with mail. Anyone that's more informed than I am about it could dispute this but that's my understanding of it.

The link is a flyaround of a legionary that me and a friend made ( and he modelled the segmentata, helmet, groin guard and shield =] ) I think DAZ did pretty good with their model, especially fine work on the helmet and balteus. But the cuirass is a bit off (shoulders overly large) and the tunic seems to be... sleeveless :S "Generally it wasn't until the later Roman period that the armor was mostly metal." Actually, the last few centuries of Rome were in decline militarily. They constantly kept hiring Germans, who demanded higher pay, so by the fall of Rome the only metal commonly worn by foot-soldiers was the helmet (cavalry, however, became skinned in iron). "Before that it was leather, leather with metal, or leather with mail." it actually progressed from a Greek-Macedonian armor of really hard leather, and occasionally bronze or iron scales built in, then in the early Republic there was virtually no armor on the younger troops other than the helm and a single greave (although they did get large, curved oval shields), and the more experienced troops generally had the same equipment in addition to mail. Then about a century before the transition from BCE to CE, Marius reformed the army to become professional and permanent (as all previous armies were raised only during wars) and all soldiers had mail, a curved oval shield, and a brass helmet, along with their own mess gear and fortification tools. This lasted to some time in the 1st century CE, then more legions came to use an iron helmet and the segmented cuirass (and also the infamous rectangular shield). Then only a century later, the empire gradually declined as aforementioned.

I now have done my homework, and humbly admit that my legionary is not historically accurate. Don't blame RenaPD, though, I put her up to it ;o) My primary reference was a roman legionary miniature built by a friend of mine who challenged me to make a digital version in Poser. His figure is based on the Poste Militaire figurine of a roman soldier which is described as common legionary from the time of the Marcomanic Wars. According to the review of the figurine on http://www.grenadier.f9.co.uk/poste/romanlegionaryreview.htm ...the accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. That said, try to compare the official illustrations of modern-day soldiers to how they look after a few months in active service. So bear with me, I still hope you can get some fun from using the legionary. Cheers, thip

Excellent work irishstag. So far I counted 4 Roman models (Dazs, Thips, Irishstags and my model). I wonder how many more models are out there.

P.S. Anyone know where I can find a decent toga (I want to created a Roman senator).

@Thip- Well, for the way the article described the figurine, it sounds like you pretty much nailed it in terms of replicating that miniature. ;) "So bear with me, I still hope you can get some fun from using the legionary." That's the most useful model I've found on renderosity! =) @david- Thanks! I really, really like your legionary's helmet, is it your own? And I see you used a redrampant shield design, excellent choice. Also, what proggie did you use to render yours? It looks fantastic.

Helmet and most of Roman equipment were originally part of an old Roman Legionnaire model I bought from Cacheforce. I striped the armor and altered it to the point that it bears little resemblance to the original. I have to go back and tweak a bit.

I noticed that the Daz model is a bit large over the shoulders but thats easy enough to tweak and you can always add a tunic underneath the armor so its no longer sleeveless. I am working on a website on Ancient Rome so I will be creating an assortment of different number models for the site. What did use to create your Legionnaire?

P.S. I used Vue dEsprit 4 to render the image. It does a great job with the proper lighting.

For the skirt I used the daz MM Period tunic. the sword, sheath, pila, and baldric are all thip's (baldric and second pilum are altered though). The pugio and sheath are from the free Daz daggers and knives set, and the armor/sleeves/scarf are all in a single figure, the sleeves being an altered MM period tunic, the neck scarf is from thip's tunic, and the armor is all original. I'll try that program, thanks :) And I look forward to your Ancient Rome site.
