Wow, I just noticed something. DivX 5.0.2 uses about one tenth as much space as Microsoft Video 1. The quality is so much better too. Animations are lookin' a whole lot better now.

I would hope so. The Microsoft Video 1 codec is ancient, and dithers everything to 16-bit colour. I never really cared for Cinepak or Duck's TrueMotion, either, although Indeo wasn't too bad for its time.

DivX has some problems, but when you can get a machine configured to use it properly, it is remarkable. And the software industry is starting to embrace the codec with all sorts of support. Warcraft 3's cutscenes are encoded in DivX, and at least one Personal Video Recorder can now capture video with DivX compression.

I still prefer MPEG-1 for maximum compatibility across multiple platforms, however.

Video 1?!? Wow, I guess you would notice an improvement. I still like Indeo 5.11 ... very high-quality. And of course MPG is always terrific. There are some Quicktime codecs that are nice as well, especially if you work with alpha channels.

Yep, those old codecs were always nasty! BRRRRR! - Video 1 was really bad and Cinepak always looked pixelated, especially on animation. I totally agree with the comments here about Indeo. In the past, I used Indeo 5.11 for all of my animation work - nice crisp detail and colours, but now I do everything in PAL resolution using the DV codec from MainConcept. (Makes it easier to use with miniDV video). To share things around I convert them to MPEG-1 format using VideoCD specs. I like DivX, heard lots of good things about Sorensen too, but for me MPEG-1 is still the best way to ensure that everyone can view your work without any codec hassle. Dave :-)

Hey Ming, How about showing us some of your animations? I'd really like to see it...me being the 14th animator I think... CAT

Ditto, all around my final versions usually end up being MPEG1 at a decent bit rate. I've used my DV Codec (Canopus Storm here), but if it'snot ultimately going to end up on a DVD or video cassette, I hate to have to render to fields, so I avoid it. Although, sometimes it's nice to have the real-time editing in Premeire.
