Subject: P5 Academic Version?

creativechaos ( ) posted Sun, 25 August 2002 at 7:21 PM · edited Thu, 06 February 2025 at 4:15 PM

Ok, I've been on the CL site and looked all over, maybe this question has been answered, and I'm sorry to repeat if it has...but does anyone have a clue how much the P5 Academic Version will be? Also, will the academic version have any "missing" funcitions of the full, regular version? If the price difference isn't that much, and there are differences, I'd like to know which version to pick up. I know I can talk to my bookstore and have them contact Curious Labs about the priceing and stuff, but I'd really like to know if there are any major differences between the two.

no, this won't happen. poser simply poses models made in other programs. even though there are things to learn in poser...it is not an actual modelling application. nor, is it required in any mainstream 3d portfolio.

creativechaos ( ) posted Sun, 25 August 2002 at 8:15 PM

I'm not sure what question you were answering Poppi, but I know it's not required for any type of portfolio. I enjoy using Poser 4 to no ends (as I'm sure my gallery proves LOL) and I want to know if there are any differences between the regular version of Poser 5 and the Academic version of it. Also, if anyone knows the price (aproximate is fine) for the Academic version. (Being a college student, hobbies and toys are a pain to get when you're paying out the wazoo for an education LOL)

it's not required for any type of portfolio. this is why i truly think there is no "academic" version. i could be wrong.

wdupre ( ) posted Sun, 25 August 2002 at 8:48 PM

you can contact CL direct for a P5 upgrade if you have an academic P4 license and no they don't make different versions (and even include the manual in academic version unlike bryce I'm currently sticking my tounge out at corel for that omission)

I bought Poser 4 at the Academic Superstore. Several of the academic sites have it up, but this is the best price I've found. $l89.95 for full version. Not an upgrade.

Good Luck.

pizazz I think you mean P5, and yes that is the best price i've seen for a new license but I believe that CL does have an academic upgrade price as well. though you can only go through them for upgrades.

pizazz ( ) posted Sun, 25 August 2002 at 9:05 PM

I bought P4 for $119.00 at the superstore. The 189.95 is for full boat P5. Haven't bought it yet - upgrading the old box first.

For some reason, I remember somebody from Curious Labs saying in these forums once that you could get student pricing on Poser, but that you had to contact them and specifically ask them about... I could be wrong, but it seems like Kupa or someone there said that here...

creativechaos ( ) posted Sun, 25 August 2002 at 10:30 PM

Hrmm, well 189.95 still isn't bad for the full version...Might have to contact CL and see if there's an academic upgrade as well, although if not, even for 189, I won't complain LOL (not since I got this version of Poser from a teacher at school...)

um... If your teacher gave you a copy of his version then you will have to buy the full version as you don't have a registered copy.

Tirjasdyn ( ) posted Mon, 26 August 2002 at 5:26 PM

I bought P4 throught the acedemic software store on my campus. What I got was a full version with a full version license. I assume they will sell P5 the same way. Though I have p4 so I bought the upgrade for 129, probably cheaper than any acedemic version.

I paid $205.something for the full version of Poser 5 + shipping. I bought it backorder at JourneyEd.com I scanned and e-mailed JourneyEd a copy of my latest pay stub and a copy of my Utah Educator's License to prove my status before purchase. A student IIRC just needs to scan/e-mail his student ID or latest report card. AFAIK, there is no academic upgrade price, though if you are faculty and happen to be teaching Poser as part of an approved curricula, CL has been known to be extremely generous with bulk licensing and pricing. Oh, Poppi - there are quite a few high school and college art departments that are taking Poser and Bryce very seriously in their intro coursework, so I wouldn't be too sure about Poser being left out in the cold ;) /P

Thanx for the Info Penguinisto. :) I'm not sure what our bookstore can do, as it's the first week of class, they're HORRIBLY busy and I'd rather not back them up further. I'll wait a few weeks till things slow down and find out how much or even if they can get it. When I asked them about P4, they laughed in my face and said "We only carry Microsoft, Corel, and Adobe products." But someone mentioned The Academic Superstore, and I did check there and it's listed as 189.95. So I guess I do have options if my school bookstore wants to be pricks again this time around. :)

Exactly... I'd go for the web anyway - our own bookstore has the "we'll get it eventually" syndrome... not the right attitude WRT Poser 5 :) /P

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 11:53 PM

LOL No doubt Penguinisto. :) Our bookstore loves the "eventually" concept. Or the "We'll get back to you" syndrome. And you're right...NOT the right attitude where P5 is concerned LOL Kymm

Not the right attitude ever...CSU(colorado) has had problems where books don't come in for weeks after classes start. 189..is good for student lol. If forget what I paid for p4 orgininally. but it was lower than retail price in 1999.

Tirjasdyn, Trust me, our bookstore has the same book problem. Fortunately for me, All of my books this semester could be purchaced at Barnes and Nobel. (small miricles LOL) I don't know why bookstores at colleges don't order more books if they know what the enrollment is. shrug Guess it's a common problem all over the states LOL
